Zener had a big adventure during the night! Somehow he climbed, pulled himself or perhaps levitated onto a high stool and then to a table where we feed Tillie, our non-FD kitty, her own wet food. She also is still eating bits and bobs of kibble from time to time - Core Wellness. We have not worried too much about leaving the dry kibble out for her overnight because Zener has never been able to get up there, even pre-FD and neuropathy. :o

Alas, we were awakened this morning not by our alarm, but by the "cat hairball alarm". On inspecting the puke, Liz says "this looks like dry food'. And I say "no, it must be the tuna". Well, it was indeed some of the dry kibble! ohmygod_smile It is still a mystery how the big guy got up there, and he is not talking, but the evidence is solid! Looks like he ate about 1/8 c. We were enjoying seeing the yellow to blue numbers and perhaps the big pink jump in his number overnight are from the dry kibble. He is feeling very smug this morning.

Today
07/28/11
AMPS 346 7th cycle @ 1.75 u 0.5 oz LC, 0.5 oz LC @ +1
+2 343 0.5 oz LC @ +2

This is Zener's 7th cycle at 1.75 u and he has been up and down some. Does it look like he is now due a dose increase, or is he still possibly bouncing from some of his lower numbers plus the dry kibble and we need to wait for a few cycles?

Trip to vet this afternoon to check for UTI/kidneys.

Hi guys .. sorry to hear about the kibble raid .. guess it's time to make a full switch :-D Although we do feed our civvie dry, it is kept up in a cupboard at night and only ate when it's being monitored .. these cats are sneaky!

Thanks for the great idea! That's what we'll have to do now. We never thought about needing to monitor since Zener's mobility seems even more limited than before. We have questioned him about how he did it, and he won't meow a thing! We are leaning more toward feline levitation as how he got up there!

Just back from vet, all good with no UTI, no bladder infection, no ketones (since they were running the urine checks, did the ketones too), waiting on blood results but all looks good. Our vet does acupuncture with mixed results for diabetes, so we are going to set up an appointment next week. Also, she is investigating herbs as well.

Will get Zener's PMPS in about an hour, and post to SS. Thinking it may be time to increase to 2.0u tomorrow?

On the down elevator now to the yellow floor.

Today
07/28/11
AMPS 346 7th cycle @ 1.75 u 0.5 oz LC, 0.5 oz LC @ +1
+2 343 0.5 oz LC
+3 338 0.5 oz LC
+6 319 FDCK treat
PMPS 230 8th cycle @ 1.75 u, LC 1.0 oz

Visit to the vet was good. Zener enjoyed seeing all his adoring fans and was a very good boy. Neg for UTI (and ketones), waiting for blood results but vet thought all looked good. They always make a copy of his current SS for his records.

Anyone with any experience with acupuncture for FD? Our vet does both acupuncture and herbs for adjunct treatment for various conditions, so we are looking into adding that to his current FD treatment. Curious about others' experiences.

Still considering a dose increase but his PMPS had dropped quite a bit since his +6 value. Would have gotten a +9 or +10 today but we were at the vet office.

Re: 07/28/11 Zener PMPS 230 ATrak Vet OK Dose Help?

I'm glad you stuck with Zener's dose. The pinks you're seeing are bounces off of the blues. A bounce can last up to 72 hours. You don't want to increase on a bounce since you could easily end up giving too much insulin. Wait for the bounce to clear and then evaluate the dose.

Thanks Sienne, when we took his PMPS and it had dropped ~80 points to 230, I wondered if this could be a bounce clearing, but I'm still not quite sure exactly what that looks like for him. What is the best thing to look for to indicate that the bounce has cleared other than 72 hours? Since we weren't really sure, we stayed with the same dose. We'll check again @ +2 and +3 and see how things are going.

Thanks for your help!

Re: 07/28/11 Zener PMPS 230; +2 150 ATrak Big drop?

Looks like he is still dropping, since it is his +2 and more can be expected, I added 1 teaspoon of MC food to his LC food to see if we can get him to surf. Not sure if this is exactly right, but will get a +3 and see how things are.

Re: 07/28/11 Zener PMPS 230; +2 151 ATrak Help Big drop?

Hello there...

Must be night of the fast dropping BGs tonight. . .

I don't know your kitty and I'm not familiar with his condition. Just popping in for moral support. Hope Zener gets on a surf board for you!

Hi Sandy and Black Kitty,

Zener is a black kitty too! He does this sometimes at night, one of these days I'll have enough data to understand his patterns better, I hope. Thanks for the moral support! I'll be posting his +3 soon. Paws crossed for the surf to be up!

Re: 07/28/11 Zener PMPS 230; +2 151 ATrak Help Big drop?

zener is probably high enough that you don't need to do anything to head it off yet. if i were you, i would simply continue to test and i wouldn't even consider treating until he was in the 50's. you can set an alarm and get up if you need to get some sleep.

the larger drops early on in treatment mostly seem to settle down as you progress through this.

Hi Julie, thanks for the information!

We use an Alpha Trak meter so I've been advised to use the 80s as a cut off. Also, since Zener has CH, I get really nervous if he gets close to 100 since it is hard to tell if he is symptomatic. I just had emergency surgery a week ago, and am still recovering, so staying up hasn't been an option for me this week and that's why I jumped on the LC + MC combo at +2. Funny he has exactly the same BG reading at +3! Perhaps it is a lucky number we should play in some gambling game!

I can't wait until the day he settles down as we progress. He's been diagnosed for 4 months now, and 2 months on Lantus and sometimes it just feels like forever! I forget about this being a marathon and not a sprint!

I'll be able to stay up for a +4 and see if there are any surprises then. Thanks again!

gosh anne, my fault. i knew that about zener and spaced. i'm so glad you keep it front and center because yes, you don't want zener to get too low because of the CH. follow your instincts.

This is a fault free zone, so no worries! I space all the time so I write it at the top of each page of Zener's logbook. So each and every time I write his values down (before I put them on his online SS) I see those mantras! I wish I could say that I'm able to remember that and keep it front and center, but the hard drive of my brain is darn full, at least that's my rationalization! I appreciate all the help I get here since I am still very inexperienced!

Have my 1 week follow up with the surgeon tomorrow, so paws crossed all looks good and I can start resuming more activity!
