07/13 Mishka AMPS 419 +3 373 +5 387 second day of a new dose

Mishka is still very early in the FD journey. Most cats don’t settle down immediately to regulation .
You may just have not found the right dose yet. Just keep following the TR and increase each three days if appropriate.
She is hungry because she is not absorbing all the nutrients in the food. Once she comes down into better numbers the hungry should decrease.

I just got used to those beautiful yellows on 2U, and wasn't ready for the renewed tomato attack ((

Don't feel demoralized! You're already doing a great job with the testing...I think the thing with FD (feline diabetes) is so many people start this journey (and yes, it's a journey) thinking it'll take a week or two and then kitty will be all better. Unfortunately, it just doesn't work that way. Some, a very few, have had quick results a it's possible that kitty was never diabetic in the first place - but most kitties don't get diagnosed until they've been diabetic for a long time. As in my case, I didn't really know why Luci was drinking all that water and losing weight...and then she'd stop...and get back to her normal self...only to return to that odd behavior after a while...If I'd taken her in the first time I noticed that behavior I may have gotten her into remission...but I didn't...so here we are over two years later and basically what I do is maintain her blood glucose levels for survival.

She will probably never go into remission at this stage of the game but she can survive for many years as long as she gets insulin - just like some people - who depend on medication to survive. Luci is healthy and happy but will forever depend on us for her life. We love her and since she is a family member she deserves to be cared for. I can tell that you love Mishka too, otherwise you wouldn't be doing what you're doing.

So take heart, slow down...breathe and just tell yourself every time you test, every time you give insulin and take all the extra steps needed during this journey that you're doing what it takes to save her life! Looking forward to seeing her picture soon :)

I don't know. It felt all wrong from the beginning, her numbers started to rise and her spirits to fall since we started insulin, and I keep thinking, probably, I'm making it all worse.

Do you know what her numbers were before you started insulin? How do you know her spirits have fallen?

Diabetes doesn't make them feel well....you will see a difference in her behavior when the numbers get better. It just takes a while to get to the right dose but once you do, she'll start to feel better and will be more like her old self. How old is Mishka? What kind of food does she eat? (You may want to add those two items to your signature so that people won't keep asking you the same things over and over)....

You are saving her life, you are not making it worse! Take some time this morning to read some of the other condos - I've seen so many people say that they can tell that their kitties are feeling better by their behavior, more playful than they've been in ages! Take heart! You're among friends here...lots of people have gone thru what you're going through!
 
I really dig the frogster name, I am a BIG frog lover. Seriously tho...these ladies know what they're talking about. When my girl started insulin she was all over the place. Their bodies just don't know what to do with that insulin and then when they go lower than what they've been used to for the past months, their poor little overworked liver sends out emergency hormones to make up for it, hence the higher #s (tomatoes, I love it) My girl went through the New Dose Wonkiness so often I thought I'd scream, and was SO frustrated. She would just lie around. Like they said, give it time. It IS truly a journey, and one that may not come to an end.....but will give them quality of life, just like humans, so they can be with you for more time than without treatment. Feed when Mishka is hungry...space it out every 4-6 hours. It would help to know what she?/he is eating. Carb content will raise their levels as well until they get closer to regulation. Hang in there. You are already doing more than some, and although it is nerve-wracking testing at home, and following all the protocols, you WILL see a change. :bighug: (this after my whining this morning...it happens) :)
 
Interestingly (or maybe yet another my tinfoil theory) for two days in a row she has cold ears and wet nose at AMPS. Usually it meant a yellow-ish BG level, but no. Will test her at +10 or +11 today.
And, yep, at higher numbers she just lies around, occasionally changing position with a groan. It is heart-wrenching. When she drifted briefly into yellows last night, she even started catching my legs and smacking a moth on the curtain. But still - a tomato and lethargy in the morning. Five tomatoes at PS in a row - our new wretched record. I don't know what to think about it.
