heehee it's quite a day at your house - and in Lantus Land, isn't it?!

Not sure if we gave you the post-trial directions, so i thought i'd post them here just to make sure you get them. We want to see you, but not because Boomer has come out of remission, if at all possible. :mrgreen:

Now that he's gotten through the trial successfully, you enter a new phase. Your cat is still diabetic, but has now become diet-controlled. Continue feeding low-carb food and small meals for the rest of his life. Avoid medications with sugar in them and steroid medications unless they are medically essential. Continue testing blood sugar weekly for the next few months and then monthly forever. It's a good idea to weigh him monthly. His weight should remain stable. If he seems "off" or sick, or is showing symptoms of diabetes (excessive drinking, eating, urinating, weight loss) test his blood sugar right away. Keep the teeth clean; dental issues can bring a cat out of remission.

If you see rising blood sugar numbers, post here before you restart insulin and ask for advice on how to proceed.
 
Thank you so much for all of your help. Yes it's quite a party day for us! I had been wondering about the post trial instructions! Dr. has previously mentioned dental to me and he thought that could be the reason why Boomer wasn't responding at first. Not sure whether to be proactive and do something about it now or not when it's not currently causing a problem. I will think about it for a bit. If you have an opinion please share! I also know that diabetic kitties get urinary tract infections quite easily; should we be proactively doing a urine culture every 6 months or so? Hate the thought of causing stress by taking to the vet though.

So so happy the Boomer went OTJ!!! He was a very good kitty putting up with all the ear pokes! But very happy it will only happen once a week now!
 
if it were me, i'd get the dental done asap. especially since you've been told he needs one - dental issues can bring kitties out of remission, and ya don't want that!

i probably wouldn't do the urine culture unless i saw symptoms. the bladder infections are prevalent in diabetic kitties because of sugar spilling into their urine and providing a culture for bacteria to grow. at least that's my understanding. So if you are checking his BGs regularly, it will show up there first if they are rising.

I did Davidson's dental cleaning while he was on insulin and just made sure he was as comfortable as possible and spent as little time at the vet as possible. He came though without issues and then once in remission he had an incident while playing with Harley and he broke his upper canine and he needed surgery to get the root out. I knew it was a risk with the stress and going under, but worse if the broken tooth got infected.........again no problems. Before the dental I would do BG tests a few times per day, then again a few times a day for a couple of days just to make sure he's okay............once he's stress free you can go back to testing weekly. Davidson will be 3 months OTJ on July 15th and I will still test weekly at least another month............then tests every few weeks. I don't do any urine testing as it's clean (he had an infection for a while) and you know your cat so just be diligent with the food and he'll be great!
