Mom-mom has been a little on the high side since the other night when I shot 1.5 hours late. Hopefully, today she will even out. She looks great, eating, drinking, all the 5 P's. I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter.

I hope I posted this in the right place. If not let me know and I will fix it for next time

Hi Laura,

You did a great job posting on this board! :-D

I'm sorry to see Mom-Mom's numbers are high again today. Hopefully this is just a bounce that will end in the next cycle or two. We definitely know that she can work the juice. There have been some really pretty greens on the spreadsheet.

Have a great day!
Shelly

Thanks Shelly but, I'm really worried about her tooth. I'm damned either way because she has terrible separation anxiety when I bring her to the vet but I know its bothering her because she slobbers a little on the left side. I pray ALL THE TIME that the tooth will just fall out like the other two did (her two top long fangs) 4 years ago. If I even attempt to take her to the car for the vet she is liable to have a heart attack before we even get there because of the trauma she endured the last time she was there. She is eating & drinking & playing but I'm stuck here because I have NO CLUE what I am going to do. I haven't left her side (except 2 store next door for ciggs) Its not that easy to just "take her" to the vet. I swear I feel like putting a string around it and pulling it myself (KIDDING). Maybe when this tooth falls out her numbers will be normal, without a trace of diabetes. That would be truly an answered prayer. Any ideas? Besides going for a car ride? Maybe an "at home" remedy that you know????

I don't have an answer for that, but i do think you need to continue having a life. you don't have to stay home every minute with her. many people work and take care of their diabetic cats. i'm not saying abandon her, but i think you can go out when you look at her numbers and don't think she's going to be low.

As far as the tooth, do you have any mobile vets that might come to your house? A cat can't really have dental work without anesthesia, so i don't know how much one could do, but it might be worth exploring. We do know pain and infections both can drive up the blood sugar, so i would hate to ignore this. it's sounds painful to me.

Oh, Mom-mom, come down from the stratosphere! Nothing up there for kitties. The dental question is a tough one. Mom-mom is a very beautiful kitty but, then, we are partial to black cats around here. :-D You do need to have a life besides FD.
Here is yesterday's post: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=117382

Re: 04/18/14 Mom-mom 542. 0.25 - 2 days running high

Mom-mom has been in the mid 500's all day today, and yesterday she was running pretty high as well. Do you think her insulin needs to be re-evaluated before tomorrow?

I am starting to get worried about my little angel from Heaven (mom-mom). She is eating & drinking well so I considered everything to be alright. When in reality she isn't taking care of her teeth as much as she would normally. I wonder if I could meet someone who potty trains a cat, that would be great. Any suggestions???? PLEASE !!!!!! Again, please let me know if anyone has any suggestions
Thank You,
Laura

Laura, are you testing for ketones?

With Mom-mom running so high, it's important that you're checking for ketones. Ketone strips can be found at any pharmacy (WalMart is probably the cheapest)

Here are some Urine testing tips that might be helpful.

If there's more than a trace of ketones, it's an emergency and she'd need to get to a vet to save her life...If only a trace, you may be able to handle it at home, but that would be considered an emergency so it would be important for you to edit your first post and add the 911 icon as well as putting something like "Ketones in urine!" in the subject line.

The only time we can see the 911 icon is when it's "attached" to the first post.

As sensitive as she's shown to be to insulin, I hate to even think about increasing her (it's too soon though!!...maybe tomorrow) but if she stays in these high numbers, we may need to revisit the idea of increasing her again.

The other idea would be to ask your vet for something to sedate her with at home before taking her. She really needs to see a vet and get that tooth taken care of.

I actually think she is going to need an increase. She was sensitive to higher doses. Her numbers on 0.25u have been ok with some green. But I think to be cautious, because it has taken her six cycles to clear a bounce before, I'd see where she is tomorrow.

Chris is right...if she has a tooth issue, you need to stay on top of the ketone testing.

Chris,
I was testing a few times weekly for a little while, like every other day. I cut a straw real little and folded the one end and taped it closed. Then I cut it pretty short (just enough over to stick up from the litter). I put about 6 in each side, every time I tested and was able to collect a little pure sample that way. I forget how I found out about that little way. She was normal every single time. Not even a hair off. OF COURSE, I havent seen the bottle of keytostiks in forever, I gotta buy another one today. Why do you say to test again for that? Does one have to do with another? I am hoping this WHOLE THING is a dental problem and not even diabetes (I hope). As far as a sedation from the vet, I never thought of asking him that, so I will ask him today when he opens. Thanks for your input. Everyone's input means so much to me  Even, or when, she gets better, I would still like to keep posting, I like you guys. It's like I have this great big feline knowledgeable family

Ketones are produced when the body starts to break down fat to use as fuel. This occurs when there is too little insulin for the amount of glucose in the body....the body is supposed to use glucose for energy, but without enough insulin, the glucose stays in the bloodstream instead of "feeding" the cells, so the body finds a way to "feed" itself.

As fat continues to be used, ketones continue to rise and can result in a condition called Diabetic Ketoacidosis, or DKA. DKA is very serious and very expensive to treat (and not always successfully), so it's best to catch ketones early, when it's still possible to flush them from the body and get them under control.

The recipe for DKA is "too little insulin+infection/inflammation+not enough food"...with Mom-mom's bad tooth/teeth, infection/inflammation are quite possible which adds to my concern. Her high numbers are another risk factor.

It's important to test ALL diabetics for ketones, but it's especially important when they're in those high numbers like she's been lately.

If she starts to look or act sick, it's vital that you get a ketone test in immediately (other than routine testing)...if she has more than a trace, she will need to go to a vet that can monitor 24 hours.

DKA is deadly, so we want to try to prevent it or at least catch it early when it's more likely to be treatable.

Go ahead and start a new post for today so this one doesn't get too long.

I 'm confused about this:
I am starting to get worried about my little angel from Heaven (mom-mom). She is eating & drinking well so I considered everything to be alright. When in reality she isn't taking care of her teeth as much as she would normally. I wonder if I could meet someone who potty trains a cat, that would be great. Any suggestions???? PLEASE !!!!!! Again, please let me know if anyone has any suggestions

what do you mean she isn't taking care of her teeth as much as she normally would?

and are you saying she isn't litter box-trained? Is she having accidents around the house?

No Julie I'm sorry about that I was joking. I wish I could teach her to brush her teeth. I'll bet noone has ever done that before. LOL

Yay for 308!! :-D :-D :-D Could you add that to the subject line of the first post? Everyone will be very glad to see that she's coming down. Lots of people brush their pet's teeth. Really.

04/19/14 - Mom-mom from 484 to 308 today

I have been so nervous about mom-mom's levels. FINALLY tonight she came from a 484 @ 8:30 this morning to 308 by 2pm. Please say a prayer that she keeps getting better. Thank You all

Lookie there....Mom-mom got down into sunny yellows!!

That's better!!

Laura, each day you should start a new "condo" (what we call posts)

Each time you get a new test, please go to your FIRST post of the day and "edit" the Subject line...so if you'd started a new condo today, it would have started out with this in the Subject line:

4/19 Mom-mom AMPS 434

Then, when you got your +3, you'd go back to that first post and you'd "edit" the subject line to add the +3 test result....so then the subject line in that first post would look like:

4/19 Mom-mom AMPS 434,+3 308

Same thing when you got the +6 result...you'd add that information to that first post's subject line:

4/19 Mom-mom AMPS 434,+3 308,+6 281

By doing it that way, as those of us that are helping you scan the board, we can see how Mom-mom is doing without having to necessarily open the condo each time...and if we see something that concerns us, we'd be sure to post to let you know too!

Thank you for that Chris. I have been trying to ask that question for the last few days but, I didn't word it right. Now that you (more or less) spelled it out, LOL, now I get it. I think it's lack of sleep because I'm really not SLOW, I'm blonde, but not slow LMAO. Again, Thanks Chris

There's a tricky part - you have to edit the subject line of the very first post, the original one that you wrote. That's what shows up on the forum. This stuff is all very confusing. You're doing a great job with everything, it's a lot.
