Last Night:
338 PMPS
342 +2 TOR
344 +3.5
215 +7

J.D. seems to be feeling better. He ate his 1st Breffis, not when it was served at AMPS, but at +1, which is fine. I just gave the kittys a treat of freeze dried chicken and he got up from his bed willingly to get his treat. He slept with me on and off through out the night, and I am hoping for a better day for him, today.

Re: 04/16 J.D. AMPS 238, +3.75 161

J.D. ate his 1st Breffis and his 2nd Breffis okay. He's just not as lively and not as responsive, like he was before, so I finally gave him some bupe. Hoping that will make him feel better.

Re: 04/16 J.D. AMPS 238, +3.75 161, +5 106

J.D. didn't want to eat his 3rd Breffis, but did eat some steak.
I did (it wasn't easy) score a vet appointment at 5:15pm, this afternoon. That's in 6 hours.
Question: I wonder if the Spec fPL would be okay, if he's only fasted for 6 hours (I gave him some Pepcid, and some pieces of steak as a chaser just now).
I hope he doesn't go to low before then. His appointment is at +11.25, so he can eat as soon as he gets home.

Re: 04/16 J.D. AMPS 238, +5 106 fasting Spec fPL Question

My guess is that 6 hours would be enough. Can you confirm with the vet?

Eta: the website says fasting sample "preferred". Fasting normally implies 12 hours. I have had it done on my cats without fasting.

Eta again: Tanya's CRF says fasting preferred but not essential.

Re: 04/16 J.D. AMPS 238, +5 106 surf vines needed

I posted on the Feline Pancreatitis Support group and they said 6 hours is fine and what is recommended for a diabetic cat. Now, I just need him to surf real nice....J.D. be good, please.

Re: 04/16 J.D. AMPS 238, +5 106 surf vines needed

Dyana, sending some feel better and safe surf vines for J.D. I'm sorry he's not feeling well and good with the Vet appt.

Re: 04/16 J.D. +5 106, +6 70, +6.5 55 Surf Vines needed

He was 55 at +6.5 and I made the decision to give him a teaspoon of HC gravy, to get him on a surfboard.
The fasting blood test will be in a little less than 5 hours. I hope it's okay. I just thought I had to make a decision now, and HC him, so he'll still have those 5 hours of fasting time.

Re: 04/16 J.D. +5 106, +6 70, +6.5 55 Surf Vines needed

poor jd - i hope he will get up and surf now, and the fPL test goes easily! he's been feeling punk for too long!

CPC = Clean Plate Club. i think mannie must've been a charter member, or perhaps a founder, of the CPC. he's the one that told punkin to get with it, and to make sure anya gets in every day too! sounds like JD made it, perhaps an hour late, but that still counts!

you must be worried, dyana. i hope the little guy perks up. :YMHUG:

Re: 04/16 J.D. +6 70, +6.5 55, +7 75 Surf Vines needed

Well, that helped. I may have blown a chance at a dosecrease, though.
I just wish he wasn't so spacey. I guess that's the bupe.
He followed me to the kitchen after the last test, probably hoping for some more gravy.
A couple minutes ago, he was just sitting there outside the kitchen, with eyes dialated and looking spacey. But he came to me when I called him. With a little gravy on his chin still.

Re: 04/16 J.D. +6 70, +6.5 55, +7 75 Surf Vines needed

punkin is pulling on my leg telling me he'd be happy to come and clean up the gravy off of his buddy, JD's, chin. ;-)

Awww Dyana, I'm sorry J.D. isn't well. I'm sending lots of 'get better' vines to him. I'm glad you can get him in to vet today.
Surf J.D., surf, Sweetie.

Re: 04/16 J.D. +9.5 59, +10.25 82

He seems to be feeling better, and I bet he's hungry. The way I tell how responsive he is usually is to offer him a treat and he's been eating them the past couple of days, just not with the enthusiam he normally shows.
One time, about 20 minutes ago I pretended I had a treat and he came right up to me. I can't tease him again. I'm bad. He does seem a little brighter right now.

He had a good snooze on the couch for awhile, while he was surfing the 40s for over an hour.

One thing that I am noticing is that he keeps leaning to the right, when he's still.

He doesn't want to go outside right now, but he's sitting looking out the screen door, and we have to leave in a half hour anyway, so that's okay.

Re: 04/16 J.D. +9.5 59, +10.25 82 Vet Apt.

Okay, we're off. I gathered up all his meds. in a tupperware and wrote down what I have been giving him, to go over with the vet.
I just told J.D. "okay, we're going to the vet" and he jumped up out of bed and raced to his food bowl. Poor baby.

Wish us luck.

Re: 04/16 J.D. +9.5 59, +10.25 82 off to Vet Apt.

Hi Dyana, you're probably at the vet. right now, sorry I missed the whole nailbitting morning, and so sorry J.D. isn't feeling well. I have my fingers, and paws crossed for J.D. I'm sure you will be on here as soon as you can…looking forward for a good report. :YMHUG:

Re: 04/16 J.D. +9.5 59, +10.25 82 off to Vet Apt.

I hope J.D. feels better real soon.
Also hope everything goes good with the vet.

Re: 04/16 J.D. +9.5 59, +10.25 82 off to Vet Apt.

Dyana, I hope everything goes well at the vet. Poor little J.D...thinking he is getting some food and instead, has to go to the vet!

Re: 04/16 J.D. PMPS 268 (at +12.75) back from vet

It took forever at the vet because I was the last appointment and they had some emergencies come in before me.
As soon as we arrived, J.D. made a pool out of his carrier. I took the sopping wet cat out of the carrier, and asked the receptionist for some towels. I did not get the instant response I wanted, so I took him into the bathroom and gave him a quick bath of his feet and tummy, while they whisked away his carrier and cleaned that out.
Then, when J.D. was wet (and stinky) I was holding him in my arms for warmth and some big mean (police looking) dog came out and started a fight with the nice mellow dogs in the waiting room. That kind of shook J.D. up a bit. The police looking dog went instantly outside, but the rest of the once mellow dogs, where now barking a lot. I put J.D. back in his carrier before a pit bull came in the door. We finally got called to the exam room and we were in there so long (I was leaning over J.D. and breathing my hot breath on him to keep his partially wet body warm on the cold steel exam table), that I carried him out into the reception area (which was close to abadoned, by then) to see if we had been forgotten.
Around +12.25 or +12.33, the doctor came in. J.D. was poked and prodded, and we got a Spec fPL on the way, and a new prescription for Mirtazapine (ours was old and almost expired).
J.D. was very happy to come home, and I tested and gave his shot as soon as he walked in the door.
He was eating his food, and then Ginger yelled (meowed) out HIGH CARB Yay! (because she got the leftover from this afternon) and then J.D. wanted her food, not his. I put the tiniest little taste of it on his food and he ate most of it.

Both cats are outside right now, and I am going to go join them.

Re: 04/16 J.D. PMPS 268 (at +12.75) back from vet

One of the reasons I like my vet is that it's a cats only practice. It's quiet. No barking dogs.

I hope J.D. starts feeling better.

Re: 04/16 J.D. PMPS 268 (at +12.75) back from vet

omg... what an adventure....

outside sounds good. Hope JD feels better soon. too fun on the high carb food alarm.

Re: 04/16 J.D. PMPS 268 (at +12.75) back from vet

That was quite an ordeal, Dyana, for you and J.D. I don't know about your clinic, but mine is always kept chilly.
Those tables get mighty cold. My vet made fun of me, for covering Check's carrier with a towel, last winter, because "he's wearing a fur coat"....yeah doc, but I bring it 'cause your table is too cold for his little butt to sit on.

J.D. got a little treat out of it, on his food, because of Ginger, so he should be happy. :-D

Re: 04/16 J.D. PMPS 268 (at +12.75) back from vet

Dyana, I havent been on that much in a few days, but I am glad he is eating, and hope the test comes back quickly so he can be all better!! Our vet ismt usually crowded, but the er vet is always mobbed with dogs & cats--Prayers for J.D. to feel all well-Hugs & Lubs from us!

Re: 04/16 J.D. PMPS 268 (at +12.75) back from vet

My vet has separate waiting rooms for dogs and cats. It's the only one I know of like that and no doubt it's a great idea but it doesn't help much with Vyktor. He hates other cats as much as he hates dogs and he hates the vet even worse so he starts hissing and carrying on the moment we set foot in the place even if no one else is waiting. They usually whisk us off to a consult room to wait. It doesn't settle Vyktor down much but at least he doesn't stir anyone else up then

Poor little wet J.D. what a horrible afternoon for the both of you. How long until you get the test results back?

Re: 04/16 J.D. PMPS 268 (at +12.75) back from vet

It sounds like an awful time for both of you! I hope JD feels better tonight and tomorrow so that you won't worry. Sending healing vines.

Re: 04/16 J.D. PMPS 268 (at +12.75) back from vet

Hopefully the test will be negative. He sounds a little better, hungry and wanting to go out to play.

I know what you mean, Sienne. This is the first time I've been lucky enough to live close enough to an all cats vet. It's so nice and quiet for the cats. They can go in without being barked at and look around if they want to.

Re: 04/16 J.D. PMPS 268 (at +12.75) back from vet

(((Dyana and J.D.)))

I am sorry that it went so badly. Sending vines for a good blood test result.

J.D. just ate most of his 3rd Dinner. That's what he's been doing lately, is eating most of his food. Not enhaling it like usual. But, he did like usual, go to Ginger's bowl next, and ate most of her food, too. So, he's eaten enough today.

I'm tired. It's been a day.

Basically, I asked for the Spec fPL just to get a comparison with his other one 4 weeks ago, when he had the last flare up.
I went over all the bottles of medicine I brought and how much I'm supposed to be giving, which was all what I've been.
And I said, "it's like we're just treating the symptoms" and he agreed. I asked how do I know when he's having a flare up and he said it's hard to tell in a cat. He said I'm doing a great job.
I'll get the test result back tomorrow, I think, and the doctor will call me.

I asked for the Mirtazapine, because the cyproheptadine says it causes blurry vision, and J.D. already has limited vision, and when he was on it last time, he was tripping down the basement stairs to use the litter boxes.
I just think, if I need an appetite stimulant that I will try to go with the 1/8th pill every day (or is it every other day?)
of the Mirtz, rather than the 1/4 pill every 3 days. Like the vet says, if I can cut them into 8ths...

Re: 04/16 J.D. PMPS 268 (at +12.75) back from vet

Hi Dyana,
What an awful afternoon at the vet! I hope J.D. has settled down, got some good food, and that you and the kitties can have a relaxing evening. My vet said it was not necessary to fast for the SPEC fpL. She did the SNAP fpL on Rusty last week (results are "negative" or "positive", no number values; if the vet has the IDEXX equipment, they can get the results immediately). (Rusty was "positive", as I suspected.). When we have the test again, in a couple of weeks, I have asked for the SPEC fpL, because I want to know what his precise number is. I will ask again about fasting before the test.

I hope that J.D. will be feeling much better soon.

Ella & Rusty

Hi Dyana

I used 1/8 on Sid and could even extend it to 3 days. Two days were just right though. While the 1/8 dose looks extremely small, it seemed to work better than the 1/4 dose. Not as much howling. I believe the 1/8 dose can be given daily now. I think those new recommendations came out last Sept/Oct.

But of course I'd give the ole vetty a call to confirm.

Hugs
Tena
