Seems like things are holding steady over here in the yellow. Great news at our house my needle phobic husband gave Griffin is PM and AM insulin. My job is very flexible but occasionally I'll be called away with a moments notice and might be gone for 12-24hrs so I need to feel confident my husband can do all the things if needed.
Questions: yesterday I tested +3,+6,+9 is this a good idea to keep doing to collect data or should I aim for once or twice a cycle?
As the depot builds is it typical to see his numbers drop?
Thanks for all the tips and help yesterday, things are feeling easier already.

That is indeed great news! It really helps to have support when dealing with a sugar kitty. :-)

The idea it to try and understand how Griffin responds to insulin. When is his onset, his nadir etc. You can test at different times in different cycles and fill in the gaps, so to speak. Typically, the onset for Lantus is around +2 - though for some cats it can be sooner or later.

A test at +2 can act like a crystal ball of what the rest of the cycle is going to look like.
  • If the +2 is about the same as the PS, it's usually going to be a pretty normal cycle - gradually down to nadir and then gradually back up to the next PS.
  • If the +2 is a lot higher than the PS, that usually means there's a bounce starting and it's usually OK to take a little bit of a break from testing.
  • If the +2 is (a lot) lower than the PS, that's your early warning that it could be an "active" cycle and numbers might go a lot lower later in the cycle and it's important to try to get more tests.

Yes, as his depot builds, his number are likely to improve. He might be bouncing from the lower numbers he saw on the night of 3/5.

"Bouncing is simply a natural reaction to what the cat's system perceives as a BG value that is "too low". "Too low" is relative. If a cat is used to BGs in the 200's, 300's, or higher for a long time, then even a BG that drops to 150 can trigger a "bounce". Bouncing can also be triggered if the blood glucose drops too low and/or too fast. The pancreas, then the liver, release glucogon, glycogen and counter-regulatory hormones. The end result is a dumping of "sugar" into the bloodstream to save the cat from going hypoglycemic from a perceived low. The action is often referred to as "liver panic" or "panicky liver". Usually, a bounce will clear kitty's system within 3 days (6 cycles)."

Thanks Bhooma this is super helpful information. I'll try to be patient with the numbers. Hopefully things look better in a couple of days.
