Happy Caturday Again LL

A little late on the upstart but I have a migraine...UGH

Alex and Jackson both went for their quarterly blood work (something that I have determined that they need) this past Wednesday. This was basically because of Jackson, not Alex. Jackson has the early early stages of kidney problems and he has been drinking water like it's been going out of style and peeing as much so I've been very worried. And his appetite has been schitzy. Last blood test his BUN and his creatinine were above normal and he is hyper-t(only slightly) so I had no idea which was causing this great thirst.
So in they went and although I haven't gotten the physical paper work yet the report came back that Jackson's BUN is a little high, but this time his creatinine is normal(YAY), his potassium is a tad high but not to worry about but his t4 went from 1.6 to 7.4 @-) (high normal being 4.0) so I have increased his Tapezole and hopefully his thirst will go back to normal.

As for Mr. Purry Pants....well his blood was pretty awesome.(unjinx unjinx-k)? Nothing really out of the ordinary for him. t4 at a nice 2. something so the dose of Tapezole he's on is still good for now. BUN/CREATININE good...
and the best part..UNJINX UNJINX!!! and I kind of knew this..Alex has gone from 9.10 lbs to 12.8 in the last 2 months. He has gained weight back for the first time since he was diagnosed with diabetes dancing_cat dancing_cat dancing_cat ...even the vet did a double take. I had weighed him on my scale but i thought maybe my scale was 'off'.
I am tickled pink. when he flops on the floor I can't hear any bones hitting the floor anymore. what a feeling! And he is more like my little man again :-D

anyway..enough of that!

All p's are in order. Alex and Jackson had a good breffis and are taking their am nap. Alex apologizes for me being boring. :lol:

I am actually thrilled.
When Alex was diagnosed with diabetes he had declined suddenly from being a healthy 14 lb and slightly tubby cat to a skinny and very sick 9 lbs. You can imagine how I feel seeing him throw a little belly around again cat_pet_icon

Hey Caryl: GREAT news about Alex and the weight gain!!! Also good news about Jackson's creat levels. BUN can be elevated for a number of reasons...high protein diet, a little dehydration, stress, etc. Sorry to hear about the hyperT levels, though. Seems like alot of cats are battling hyperT. We've had one with it (Gus) and he had I131 treatment and now our Teddi Bear is borderline...not treating her yet.

So sorry about the migraine....I hope you feel better soon.

Nice AMPS for Alex too!!!

Nothing boring about that report, Caryl. We love good news. Alex putting on weight must have done your heart good :-D
Is it easy to get Jackson to take the Tapazole? Checks will probably have to be on it. I'm waiting for FreeT4 results to come back. His T4 showed him at 4, last week. I understand it fluctuates throughout the day.
I hear it's a tiny pill....true? I'm gonna get the duck&pea pill pockets.

So sorry about your migraine. Hope you're feeling better tonight.

Bloodwork is a mystery to me, but weight gain...well, this is about the only place I know where I celebrate weight gain! :lol:

The only thing missing from your post was a WBR (other than the migraine ohmygod_smile ). Thinking of you. :YMHUG:

Both of my guys are on so many pills that it's part of their daily routine. Alex and Jackson are both on Tapezole twice a day now along with heart medications. I have never had any problems giving pills to any of my cats.(my last kitty, Chance, was on cardizem for 6 years and I did all kinds of acrobatics with him until one day I just stood him on a table and opened his mouth and he took it. I think I laughed for 3 days)

Jackson loves to get water from a syringe so he knows he's getting syringe water with his pills..that makes pill time a treat. For Alex it's a game. First he hides. When I find him he goes in to the kitchen and then I stand above him with the pills and open his mouth and play airplane going into the hanger...and then tell him how awesome he is. So he gets all happy. Then they get a little American cheese. It's trial and error but I have no problems. It's just learning not to be nervous and get it down the throat the first time as often as you can. I've had no luck with pill pockets or pill guns. In my case(and I only speak for myself because it is SO important that Alex does not spit out his heart medications) I only trust my hands and my eyes.

Tapezole is tiny and very easy to administer. I'm sure you'll do fine. It just takes getting used to...like anything else.

Hey Kathy :)

Alex has always flopped instead of sat down like a normal cat.Since he was diagnosed at a measly 9 pounds I have been terrified that he was going to break a hip. His hip bones were REALLY sticking out and you could hear them bang against the wood floor every time he flopped down. It made me cringe. :sad:
This weight gain is monumental to me. Even if he's a little pudgy..I don't care. He doesn't look puny and pathetic anymore.

He looks like ALEX :mrgreen:


WBR..you don't want that..trust me :lol: :lol: :lol:

Actually I'm relieved that Jacky's hyper-t was elevated. I was afraid it was his kidneys. Jackson and Alex are litter mates and they couldn't be more genetically similar even down to the months that they were diagnosed with their problems. They basically have the same problems(including tiny little kidney stones in the exact same place), except for diabetes. Jackson does not have that(THANK GOD) and chances are good that he won't get it because he's been on Alex's diet since he was diagnosed. I test Jackson once a month to keep an eye on him.
Unfortunately..hyper-t is very common in cats....
Thanks! My migraine is only a fraction of what it was before but I seem to be getting them every day....I think a visit to the neurologist is in order :YMSIGH:

Caryl: glad your migraine is not as severe.

Keep in mind that hyperT and kidney levels can be tied together and hyperT can mask CRF; if a cat being treated for hyperT, such as Alex and Jackson, and they have NORMAL range numbers and their kidney levels are normal, then all is good. But if the thyroid levels are elevated, whether on treatment or not, you would probably see lower creat numbers because the increased thyroid activity increases the infusion of blood to the kidneys and lowers creatinine. Conversely, if the thyroid is too low, there is not enough blood to the kidneys and you could see the creat level increase.

Mr. K is very fine. The throwing up has really backed off since his dental. Amy & Six suggested it might, and I was surprised... but it has! The weather is making him nuts -- sunny and 60, so he's out on the porch. Next day, rainy and 40, who took his outside away?? :-x But otherwise, fine.

My vet is always very concerned about the amount of tap he gives the cats because he doesn't want to " fry their kidneys ". He said they are good now. I don't know what all that means but I will trust him on this :)
