Here's my first attempt at posting Mowgli's status every day. I have to do it if we are going to consider adding an R insulin to the docket. Since his numbers haven't budged much since we started treatment, I haven't felt like bugging people here with daily statuses!

I just updated the lab work tab on Mowgli's SS with the information from his January diagnosis bloodwork. At the time the vet also did a SNAP fPL test and only told me he was positive for pancreatitis. I realize now it may have been more helpful to have the vet run a Spec fPL instead?

Anyway, the vet said at the time that everything else in his bloodwork was good. Urine culture also came back good. I was hoping to get some experienced eyes on his lab numbers to see if you guys/gals think there isn't something else that we might be missing.

Thanks for the heads up. Edited title.

I was wondering why my vet didn't send me any results for the pancreatitis test and realized it must have been because she ran the SNAP fPL. I'm assuming there was nothing to send me since the result was simply that Mowgli was positive for pancreatitis.
 
I also wanted to ask if it's worth asking for the Spec fPL test done if Mowgli really doesn't show any pancreatitis symptoms? Is it possible that he is just that good at hiding them? He eats voraciously and tries to steal food all the time.

The vet initially didn't prescribe any nausea or pain medication to treat Pancreatitis since he's not showing symptoms. Is there a chance that he may in fact benefit from the use of medications for the Pancreatitis?
 
Tagging Elise @tiffmaxee who knows more than me on pancreatitis.

With the labs tab, it really helps us if you could highlight any out of range values with red text, or something like that. At quick glance, his cholesterol is high, but that's not unusual for diabetics. I also noticed his urine protein is +2. You want to keep an eye on that and see if it stays high. Proteinuria can be an early sign of kidney disease and can be treated. My vet waited for a couple times in a row of numbers being out before investigating further.

Did you talk to your vet about the possibility of using R?

Since the Snap test was positive he did have pancreatitis. Getting a SpecfPL only would make sense if acting sick to make sure that’s the cause. With chronic pancreatitis some cats always test that they have it even when not acting sick. Cats are so good at hiding things when sick though. Since he’s eating I doubt he’s nauseous. Does he seem to lack energy? Withdrawn? Do you think he could be in pain?

Was his blood pressure taken? High blood pressure can sometimes case protein in the urine. M vet would also retest that in a month. The potassium is a little low but that could be from urinating more. Something to keep an eye on.

I'll have to look for a new vet considering our first vet said she is out of her element treating diabetics. I was hoping I could make the decision to use R myself with the help of experienced users here since I've heard there's no need for a prescription to buy R anyway. And aren't we all on our own when it comes to insulin treatment anyway!? Lol

When I find us a new vet, I will make sure they run another blood panel to go along with the test for acro and IAA. I'd like to get the proteinuria treated early if it's a red flag like you say.

I don't think the vet checked his blood pressure. Although I bet it would've been high considering he threw such a fit that he had to be sedated just to draw blood.

That's hard to say... He goes crazy when we take his food out, so in that sense he does have energy. He also doesn't seem to be in pain. Although we catch him sitting on the kitchen counter most of the day hoping we will feed him more and if instead we go to pet him every so often he will swipe at us and hiss. In that sense he is more irritable than he used to be. Maybe it's from pain or maybe it's from him being more weary of our hands since we obviously prick his ears a bunch.

If you are happy with your vet otherwise, you can keep her and use the board for the dosing, you don't need to find a 'specialist' for that. It's refreshing that your vet would admit that they are out of their element with feline diabetes, perhaps she would be willing to learn more about it with you? :)
My vet was the same, George was her first FD kitty, I shared the ss with her and just got on with the dosing with the help of the board, we saw her for check ups and blood work.

I hope she can still help us with further blood work and regular check ups. If Mowgli tests positive for acro or IAA then I can offer to learn alongside her.
