02/08 Ethan AMPS 191, PMPS 47 (faulty test?), +0.75 173

A couple more updates on Ethan today- his vet just replied to schedule an exam for his lip mass. She did not give any hints as to what it could possibly be.

We are going to redo his bloodwork in preparation for his dental. She acknowledged the abnormalities in his December bloodwork (that his previous vet did not mention to us- except for glucose) and also pointed out an additional abnormality that I did not catch in there- slightly low chloride. I've seen that stress or dehydration could potentially cause low chloride (and Ethan was likely quite dehydrated at that point from the diabetes) so I'm trying not to fret about it too much...

OK... tonight's test was a bit of a disaster.

Same set-up as the last successful tests, got a good first poke in easily, but very little blood. I had to poke several times to get some blood (and tried to milk but Ethan hates that more than poking) and even then it was probably the bare minimum readable amount.

In the midst of trying to poke, milk, and attempt the tests, I ran out of "pate juice" to distract Ethan so I scooped out food around on the dish to keep him in place. Then got the reading back...47. Given how chaotic the test was I am a bit skeptical of this reading...but if we test again his numbers are going to be confounded by food now...

Thinking of still trying to test again shortly and then trying to determine a dose...if anything. We're at PMPS +0.5 already after the testing snafu and typing this.

I would test again regardless. Food takes 20-30 minutes to go from the plate to the blood steam BG. You have some time.

Just tested again (it was probably PMPS +0.75 when we started the process) got 173 which seems more reasonable although could be propped up by food.

Edit: I gave 1U to play it safe (usual dose 1.5U) given the wonky results (and our not-so-stellar testing capability...still working to improve). This was at ~PMPS +1.25.

Food shouldn't take him up 120ish points, unless giving high carb food. The 1 unit was fine for tonight. Best be safe.
