Furball was happy & purry this morning. I forgot to mention that I started using the pen yesterday evening. I finished up the vial. What happens if air accidentally gets in the pen? Does it ruin the pen? I'm wondering because I noticed with a few of the syringes I've had recently that air bubbles came out when I had to add a little more insulin and had to put the syringe back in the vial to get it. I always try to draw extra insulin, but with the markings on the syringes being so off, that's not easy.

Sienne, I was wondering if she needed an increase. I'll have to see about adjusting the calipers tonight. I can't think well enough to do it this morning.

Re: 01/27 Furball +10.25=229 AMPS=281 Pen?

I just know that you never want to push air into the pens or cartridges as they are vacuum sealed and can burst.

Good luck with the dosecrease when you decide to do it.

Re: 01/27 Furball +10.25=229 AMPS=281 Pen?

Morning Carla,
If I remember correctly, some people were at first injecting air into the pen. I don't remember if it makes
the insulin not last as long, or just gives you more bubbles when you draw it out. I can't stand bubbles

Glad Furball is feeling her usual happy self :-D :-D Happy Monday and good luck with the increase!

Re: 01/27 Furball +10.25=229 AMPS=281 Pen?

You definitely don't want to push air into the pen or it could burst. I don't think it will change the effectiveness of it. I have accidently gotten air in there before and still been able to use the pen until the end anyway.

Have a great day Carla!

Sometimes air does get into the pen. If it's a big enough bubble, you can use a syringe to try to draw off the air. I'm not sure the pen would burst -- I guess in principle it could. There's always a possibility that the glass may crack but I've not heard anyone mention having had that happen.

I hear ya on the morning thing!

Yay for happy furry purry!! Good luck with the dosecrease...have a great day, Carla!

Morning Carla ~O) ~O) ~O)

Hey Furball - blues for you today? think about it... I think mamabean would like that.

It seemed like I was always dealing with air in the pens. That happened more often than not. It did not adversely affect the insulin, as far as I could tell. Numbers for Mannie were consistent enough when there was or wasn't air in the pens. I too wouldn't inject any in there, Logic has it that it would affect the pressurized structure of the whole set up.

Hear ya too on the morning thing. I was always on auto pilot in the mornings.... ;-)

Have a great day today. I hope all goes well.

Good luck with the new pen, I've never used them but it sounds ok:) I'm totally a fog brain in the morning too

I'm glad Furball is happy and purry today! Good luck if you do the dosecrease tonight :-D . I hope you have a great Monday!

Re: 01/27 Furball +10.25=229 AMPS=281 Pen?

I'm not a morning person at all, so I totally understand not being able to process things well at 0-dark-thirty!

I can't contribute any wisdom on the pens as I've never tried them. Good luck with the dosecrease, if you decide to do it.

Hope you have a good day, Carla.

Re: 01/27 Furball +10.25=229 AMPS=281 Pen?

I try my best to keep air out of the pens, but I have had it happen and was still able to use the whole thing. I also dropped one in the pharmacy parking lot. It didnt' seem to hurt the pen, but I nearly cried thinking I had just ruined it. I think they are pretty hearty. Hope you come home to blues today.

It was nice to come home to that blue. I fattened her dose this evening. Hopefully it will bring some green.

Thanks everyone for you thoughts on the pen. It sounds like as long as I don't intentionally inject air into it, a few air bubbles won't hurt it.

I am finally feeling a little bit better.

Re: 01/27 Furball +10.25=229 AMPS=281 Pen?

you shouldn't be putting anything at all into the pen, only drawing insulin out. if you have to put the needle back in to get more insulin, make certain you don't let anything in the syringe go back into the pen. draw out more than you need, then to get the bubble out of the syringe, point the needle towards the ceiling and either flick or tap it to make the bubble come off the side of the syringe and rise.

the air itself in the pen isn't a problem. the reason i was discarding this pen is because the negative pressure had sucked the insulin back out of my syringe into the pen - and punkin took a larger dose, so it wasn't an itty bitty unit that went back in.

here's the video refresher on how to draw out of a pen (that's punkin complaining in the background!)
