Good morning :-D

J.D. happily ate his first breffis and is sitting in his bed. One thing I kept thinking about J.D. yesterday, is that he is happy. I loved the way he was running around playing with and chasing Ginger, yesterday morning.

I'm sorry I didn't have any time to post in condos last night. I was up late though, and decided to have one night of sleep and didn't test in the middle of the night at all :o . J.D. will be going to work with me, today. This is the start of a looong work week for me. I think I'm going to need to take an extra day off soon.

This is the blood work results we picked up yesterday:
01/10/11 BUN 39 (high) Range 15 - 34 mg/dl, on 07/13/10 he was 33 (normal)
01/10/11 Cholesterol 267 (high) Range 82 - 218 mg/dl, on 07/13/10 he was 204 (normal)
01/10/11 A/G Ratio 0.9 (high) Range 0.4 - 0.8, on 07/13/10 he was 0.8 (normal)
01/10/11 T4 2.2 (normal) Range 0.8 - 4.7 ug/dl, on 07/13/10 he was 1.8 (normal)
01/10/11 HGB 15.4 (high) Range 9.5 - 15 g/dl, on 07/13/10 he was 15.2 (high)
01/10/11 HCT 46.1 (high) Range 29 - 45%, on 07/13/10 he was 42.8 (normal)

So this time he had 5 highs and 6 months ago he had 1 high.

I asked the vet about Cosequin, because J.D. is 16 years old and slowing down and sometimes I see him holding one back leg up (instead of putting weight on it) for a step or two, when he goes downstairs to the litter boxes. He said it wasn't a bad idea and wouldn't hurt him, so I have been giving him 1 capsule once a day. Is that okay? The package says: under 10 pounds 1 capsule daily, and over 10 pounds 2 capsules daily. J.D. weighs 14.5lbs. I don't want to over do it, just try to help him out. Any thoughts?

I hope everyone has a good day.

Re: 01/16 J.D. AMPS 217 and bloodwork results

Did the vet think J.D. was dehydrated? I'd try to get more water into J.D. It may help to drop some of those levels and at worst, it won't hurt anything.

Re: 01/16 J.D. AMPS 217 and bloodwork results

Isn't there a starting period with cosequin where you give a higher amount for a few weeks and then go back down?

I don't know much about blood work - that doesn't have to do with the liver. I know you'll get good advice.

First signs of Maverick's arthritis was he clicked when he walked, two vets discounted it completely. He can't jump at all. When he goes down the stairs he bunny hops, both legs go down at the same time. He is really slow going up the stairs too. Good for you starting sooner rather than later.

Re: 01/16 J.D. AMPS 217 and bloodwork results

Morning Dyana,

I haven't had any experience with cosequin but from his weight maybe he should be taking two. You could just see if one helps him out any and if not try BID. See what others think about the doseage of cosequin. Hope it helps him out.

Glad that he is happy and I love to see them play too. :-D Not a shabby amps either.

Have a good day with J.D. at tbp.

That yellow looks bluish to me...right, J.D.? Know nothing about the Cosequin myself....
That's so nice that he is going to work to help you out today...hope you both have a productive day!

Re: 01/16 J.D. AMPS 217 and bloodwork results

Awwww ((((((dyana)))))) THat makes me so happy to hear you say JD is a happy cat. Then again, how could he not be under your care! cat_pet_icon

You deserve a break and uninterrupted sleep. I hope you enjoyed it. Sorry you have to work today. Blech. My wish for you would be a 1 week staycation.

Regarding the labs...Sienne is correct. Most of those highs might be pointing to some dehydration. Can you add some more water to JD's food. Any chance you have a drinking fountain or could give one a try?

It sounds like the 1 capsule of cosequien is fine. Certainly cant hurt.

:YMHUG: to you, JD, and Ginger. Hope you have a great Sunday (even if it is at work)

Re: 01/16 J.D. AMPS 217 and bloodwork results

Hi, Dyana & JD.. Happy Sunday to you both.. I agree, it is great to read that JD is a happy cat dancing_cat
I cannot eat shrimp now without thinking of him LOL
Looks like you have received some great advice regarding the lab results too.. nothing to contribute from me regarding that though.. I dunno.

Re: 01/16 J.D. AMPS 217 and bloodwork results

Dyana: I actually have alot of experience using cosequin. At one time, Gracie (8.5lbs) was on one capsule bid. It won't hurt him to give him the same dose....it shouldn't upset his tummy but just watch him...ECID. She was on this dose for a very long time and J.D. is much larger than she is so it's ok to give him that much. You can crank it down to a maintenance dose in a few months if you see it is helping him. My Gus was also on it....he is an 11 lb boy. He took it bid for over two years.

Good luck!!!

Re: 01/16 J.D. AMPS 217 and bloodwork results

Hey JD - I hear you may be thristy...my Mom got me the the Dinkwell 360 waterfall at PetSmart. I love it & drink lots more water now 'cuz it is so fresh & moving all the time. Take care, Lanky

Re: 01/16 J.D. AMPS 217 and bloodwork results

Dyana...it brought a huge smile to my face to hear your thoughts on JD's happiness...

IMHO..quality of life & love are the two key ingredients!

oh, yes, a happy cat is the best kind of cat, I agree! So glad to hear that JD is running around and chasing his sister. He got a pair of zippy pants for Christmas, I see!!!

Hey, JD, guess what...I just tested Spot and he's 95 too! Oh, and I got a whole bunch of shrimp in the fridge....Spot said you can come and bisit him!!!

The vet told me on the phone that all his blood work was normal. He did not say anything about J.D. being dehydrated.
I just tried to pull up the skin just past his scruff and the skin went back just fine.
J.D. has a fountain, and I have seen him drinking from it recently. "Normally" I only see him drinking water when he's either real high, or mostly I see him drinking when he's going low. Lately, I have seen him drinking water in between. Not a lot, just a few laps.
I already add water to his canned food. Most of it anyway.
Should I be worried? I think he's okay. Looks around..and doesn't see him... I think he's waiting for shrimp right now.

I am sooo tired, and must go to bed. I hope J.D. has a nice surf, tonight.

wow I had no idea J.D. was a senior nice surf today for him and I started Do Lou out just recently on coesquin and he weighs 15 lbs but I am only starting him with one a day

So glad to hear J.D. is happy and Tinkerbell was so excited that he came to her party yesterday in his fancy red convertible.

When is he coming to the Falls to give her a ride? She can't wait to ride around in that hot car with that handsome J.D.!

Thanks for visiting in our condo, DD. :-D
J.D. turned 16, and finally got his driver's license  I think he needs some more experience driving all by hisself, though.

As far as moving to The Falls, wishful thinking there. Very Wishful thinking..
