Re: 01/14 Whiskers AMPS 370 Going to the U of M

We got an appointment with a faculty vet at the U of M that Carolyn recommend. It is on January 25th. I was hoping to get in sooner. Since I can't I'm going to try and have a C&S done at my regular vet. Whiskers will get her last dose of AB tonight. One FDMB member suggested going as soon as possible for the C&S, another said wait so as not to get a false negative. Thoughts?

this is standard language on Antech's C&S reports: "false negative results may occur if the patient is or has been on antibiotic therapy within the last 7-10 days." discuss with vet?

Re: 01/14 Whiskers AMPS 370 Going to the U of M

Really glad you got an appt. Sorry its so far out. Not too bad, tho.
If memory serves me correctly, I always had to wait about a week after finishing the a/b before doing a follow up urinalysis. Since its the weekend anyway, maybe see if you can get in to the regular vet early to mid week. Can you give them a call tomorrow and see what they suggest?

Make sure you get hard copies of the labs from your vet and any relevant information documented by them lately. Make copies and bring them with you to the U. Your vet will offer to fax records to the U. Kindly accept, but ask them for hard copies to bring with anyway. Hand it to the student when you start the initial part of your appt. If you can, fax it yourself prior to the appt as well.

Since this is the first time Whiskers will be seen at the U, I think its nice for them to have a short written summary of whats been going on/history from the owners perspective. They may/may not look at it during the appt, but will keep in file. I thought it would be helpful in case I needed to call and talk with someone unfamiliar with Latte. It did often help. The students read those files tooth and nail, passing info on to the vets. Have your list of meds, copy of spreadsheet, and maybe a short outline of whats been going on with dates (for your own reference when they ask you questions). Make a list of questions. Bring a pen.

They now email test results to you, along with their summary - if you ask. Otherwise they will mail it a week or two later. Sometimes it takes them that long or longer to get it to your regular vet. Tho they are getting better.

I always made a point to be overly organized when I went to the U. It was a big deal and cost lots of money. I needed to make sure no stone was left unturned. I think it also helped the vet understand that my involvement with care is vital.

Oh - and as you have probably experienced, along with Patty, expect it to take 4x longer than you plan.

Hi WCF and Meowzi,

Thank you for the information. I will discuss it with the vet.

Hi Carolyn,

Thank you for all the information, I will certainly get all of that ready before our visit.
Whiskers was seen at the U of M last fall, for a biopsy, a mass on her one for her rear hocks. It was thankfully benign. One less thing to have to stress about.

I'm glad you got an appt! Maybe you could ask them to call you if someone cancels earlier.

Re: 01/14 Whiskers AMPS 370 Going to the U of M

Hello all,

The vet we are seeing at the U of M is a faculty vet experianced with FD. He will not be in until January 24th. I could get in sooner, but it would be with a resident, and I think that would be similar to seeing our vet. I want to see someone experianced in the field of issues we are dealing with, and hence made the decision to wait.

Something strange. Whiskers is happy, purring and generally content, and we are just finishing a short course of AB. Also no peeing on the tile floors today  . This is just a gut feeling, but each time she has finished a short course of antibiotic she seems to feel and be better. After a week or two, she is back to peeing a lot and just general discomfort. She will squeak when I pick her up, that is when the vet talked about kidney infection. I believe Carolyn mention kidney infection requiring a long course of antibiotics to clear up. I just wonder if this is the case with Whiskers?
