Hi,

As some of you know, Whiskers is having problems with IE. It has really ratched up again this week. Peeing 2 or 3 times a day (that I know of) outside the litter box.

She used to be really affectionate, she purred a lot, and would sleep with us. Now she keeps to herself, doesn't want to be held and is really restless to go off by herself. I'm really worried. She has been treated for 3 UTI's the last couple months and it doesn't seem to help.

I'm going to take her to the U of M as soon as we can afford it. Does anyone have any other ideas, thoughts, suggestions?

Have you had C&S's done when she's had the UTI's? Is she getting re-checked after the course of AB's to see if the UTI is gone? Have you changed litter or moved the boxes? Any new animals? Cleaning the soiled spots really well? I don't know, that's all I can think of, but I hope you get it figured out soon.

Hello Anne,

Funny we are posting in each others condo's at the same time  .

Unfortunatly the vet has not done a C&S, and I didn't know to ask. We did discuss it a couple days ago and are going to do one.

The litterbox is something we have tried everything we can think of as indicated in a post a ouple days ago. viewtopic.php?f=9&t=34180

Thank you have a great night cat_pet_icon.

Oh ok, I went back and read the old condo, sorry I missed that one. It really sounds like you've tried everything! Muffin doesn't want to use one of the litter boxes sometimes, I think because it's one that several of the cats use. She would pee right in front of it, so I now put a potty pad in front of it and she'll use that when she, for whatever reason, doesn't want to actually enter the box. But if there's not a particular spot that she's using instead of the box, that won't help you either.

I would really do a culture. We just did one for our dog and got the results yesterday - the vet didn't want to run it and felt that it was her medication (lasix) or old age. Came back as Ecoli after months of accidents.

If the UTI is ruled out but a cytocentesis and C & S, then there may be behavioral issues. You need to make sure there is sufficient time between finishing any ABs and getting a new urinalysis that you don't get a false negative report.

The one thing that I noticed from your link to the previous condo is that you have 4 boxes for 5 cats. You need more boxes. The rule of thumb is 1.5 boxes per cat in multiple cat homes. There are medications that may help. I'd also try the Feliway, as you noted you were planning to do.

Re: 01/13 Whiskers AMPS343+2.5 198PMPS370 Inappropriate elim

It does sound like it's more than an aversion (for whatever reason) to the litterbox. The change in Whiskers' social behavior suggests a medical problem. Or, if it is a social problem, perhaps she is having issues with one of your other cats (keeping her out of the litterbox? "telling" her to keep away from you?). Can you take her back to the vet and have the C&S done as soon as the old course of antibiotics is out of her system? It could be, as Sienne suggested, that the wrong antibiotic was given and that it didn't have any effect on whatever bacterium is causing the problem.
Is it possible to confine her to a small space for a few days of observation? Provide her with her bed, her own litterbox, pee pads, her food bowls and some toys. Try a litter that has no perfume. Some cats don't like strong smells. When we were considering having the I-131 treatment for Stu's hyperthyroidism, we were told to use the Worlds' Best Cat Litter (because of its flushability; i.e., to keep radioactive residue out of landfills), so we switched to it and have never switched back to anything else because it is so superior. It is 100% ground corn kernels, light weight, clumps well, has a pleasant natural odor, and, although it costs more, it lasts much longer than the usual clumping litters. Stu did well with it (even though he had never used clumping litter before), and Rusty does very well with it. He keeps a beautiful litterbox!

Good luck!

Ella

So sorry that Whiskers is not using his box! I know you mentioned you'd tried Cat Attract... you may want to consider just trying the cat attract sprinkle stuff that goes on top of the litter, in conjunction with the feliway you're considering and maybe some bach flower remedy.

Willie was like that when he wasn't feeling well... wanting to be alone, refusing to use the box, etc. I hope you guys can get to the bottom of it soon!

Have you had an U/S done to make sure she doesn't have pyelonephritis? Bacteria from kidney infecftions does not always show up on a C&S. She might also have idiopathic interstitial cystitis like we fought with Gracie for years before we figured it out. This can be quite a painful and frustrating disease. It could be brought on by stress but often has no bacterial component. You said IE 2-3 times a day but didn't say how much urine she is producing....it if it's a normal amount, the chances are less that it is IC. Good luck!!

Happy Friday Cheryl and Whiskersl! :YMHUG:

I know this is so hard for you. Im sorry.
You really are doing the best you can, as is Whiskers. A vet once told me (when I was VERY frustrated), that Latte was doing the best she could. It really helped to hear that, because its true. Every cat and every bean is doing the best they can under their circumstances and with their knowledge. Remember, Whiskers has been through a lot too. She is so lucky to have you.

You have a plan set out. You will get another urinalysis/culture/sensitivity. The sooner the better, since it seems *if* the IE is related to an infection the appropriate a/b is not being used. You will work to get an appt at the U. Maybe set an appt in advance, rather than wait until the funds are there. Sometimes it can take a while to get in. It will give you some hope to look forward to. You can also ask for the cost when you set the appt, so you have a goal to aim for.

You have a great support network here. Vent away as you feel the need!

I know you have probably researched high and low, and sounds like you have/are trying a zillion things to help correct this problem with WHiskers. I did glance through this article, which may or may not shed some light and give you some additional tricks to try:
http://www.vet.cornell.edu/fhc/brochures/housesoiling.html

If there is a space you are leaving Whiskers while you are out, so she doesnt urinate everywhere....OR there is a specific spot she is urinating, maybe you could lay some puppy pee pads there? Easier to clean up and might not leave the smell behind. Not sure if its practical. They were a life saver for me when Latte was always peeing out of her box (she got in, but usually only half way and peed on the floor  ).

I hope you have a good day!

Hi everyone,

I may have made a typo we have 5 boxes 4 cats, I'm considering adding a sixth box. We have tried the worlds best cat litter.

As for the amount of urine, it is a lot, as she drinks a lot not being regulated.

We have not had U/S done to make sure she doesn't have pyelonephritis? Bacteria from kidney infecftions does not always show up on a C&S. Marjorie mendtioned idiopathic interstitial cystitis like she fought with Gracie for years before we figured it out. This can be quite a painful and frustrating. I will inquire about it at the U of M. What does U/S stand for? The vet did mention the possibilty of kidney infection but has not yet done any testing.

I have not used just the cat attract sprinkles, so that is something else we can try.

I don't confine her when we are gone, because it is usually 9 hours while we're at work. She sticks to urinating on the tiled bathroom floors, occasionally on the master bedroom carpet. I don't like to confine her for long periods if time.

We have confined her after a biopsy (benign) and she did use the box than, but it was a while ago, things may have changed (maybe physical cause now).

I have not used the pads. If it is not physical it could be something to try.

Thank you everyone, I'm going to try to call the U of M right now.

Reducing your stress with the clean up will help you get through this!

The pads used on human beds to deal with seepage of one sort or another are larger than puppy pads.

Using easy clean drop cloth/tarps over flooring also makes for easy clean.

If you are doing any food rotations, keep a strict log of what food ingredients were fed when. Sometimes, you can find a food culprit triggering interstitial cystitis by doing this, though it may show up a day later.

I don't have any advice to offer. So many good suggestions already. I just wanted to say that I hope things get better for you and Whiskers. It's so frustrating to not be able to sit down and have a conversation with a kitty and ask if anything hurts or why they are doing x, y, z.
