Furball was happy & purry this morning. I hope she clears this bounce soon. It is very cold here this morning, way below normal temperatures. When I got up my thermometer said it was zero F outside. The wind chill right now is -20F It is only supposed to get to 10F today with wind chills -20F to -30F. Thankfully this is only supposed to last through tomorrow.

Re: 01/07 Furball +10.5=303 AMPS=325 Pen ?

If I get a prescription for pens, does it have to be written specifically for one pen at a time or just say pens? Thanks.

Re: 01/07 Furball +10.5=303 AMPS=325 Pen ?

Stay warm, Carla ~O) ~O) We are extremely cold in FL also.
My vet wrote the RX as Lantus Solostar Pen, 1-2 U BID, or as directed. #1 and in the refill section, she just wrote YES.

Happy Tuesday :-D

Re: 01/07 Furball +10.5=303 AMPS=325 Pen ?

I had a problem with syringes, because my vet wrote the prescription too specific and I had him re-write in as general terms as he could, so I had a wider choice when filling it. I think Jane's advice would work.
Good luck to you. Let us know how it goes.

Come on down, Furball.

Re: 01/07 Furball +10.5=303 AMPS=325 Pen ?

Morning Carla ~O) ~O) ~O) 3

it was the same with my vet, a general script, and then the refill part was listed as yes. It worked fine for me that way. Every now and then I had to have her retell the pharmacy that refills were ok.

Sorry for the bounce this morning. Come on down Furball.

Enjoy your day today. I hope all goes well. Stay warm. It is so cold out there....

Re: 01/07 Furball +10.5=303 AMPS=325 Pen ?

Hi Carla!

I think with the pens, the problem is going to be finding a pharmacy that will sell one instead of requiring you to buy a box of 5. Everyplace I talked to around me wouldn't break a box, so it was either buy 5 pens or a vial.

The vet can write it for 1 pen, but if the pharmacy won't sell it that way, you're out of luck

From reading others condos, the most likely places to try are Target pharmacies and hospital pharmacies that will sometimes sell one pen at a time.

Good luck with it!

Re: 01/07 Furball +10.5=303 AMPS=325 Pen ?

Good luck with the pen, I hope you can find it sold individually :-D I'm so grateful I don't need to get a prescription...but I couldn't find anyone that sold individual (although I didn't have a lot of time to look, it was "you need to start insulin tomorrow" and terrible weather so I just got a vial...maybe next time pen). Blech on the cold! I hope you are staying nice and warm ;-) Come on Furball, and clear that bounce! We want to see some yellows, blues...and greens? Have a great Tuesday!

Furball was happy & purry this evening. I'm hoping to see some more blue soon.

Thanks everyone for you advice on the pen prescription. I talked to my vet today and she wanted to research it a little bit to make sure I was getting the same concentration. She had never heard of the pens. She called me back and agreed to see how it works with the pens. She gave me a prescription that says "Lantus Solostar pen 3 ml. Quantity: one pen. Give 1.75 unit BID SQ. Refill until 12/13/2014." I hope this is acceptable and the pharmacy will really sell me one pen. They told me over the phone that they will. I will probably wait until Saturday to go to the pharmacy. The vet wanted me to let her know how it works out so she can offer it to other people if it works.

The vet told me to ask the pharmacy if I can take the vial out of the pen to be able to draw the insulin out. I haven't had a chance to watch the video yet on drawing insulin from the pen. I wasn't sure what she meant. She wanted to make sure I didn't pay for something I couldn't use. I was happy she was open to checking something new out and was willing to work with me.

You just pull the cap off and you'll see the little rubber stopper like you do on a vial. Insert syringe and draw up like you would a vial. The main difference is you don't shoot any air into the pen first like you do with a vial

Looking forward to seeing if the way your vet wrote it will allow you to get just the 1 pen! Will have to tell us which pharmacy if you do! :-D

C'mon down, Furball....time to break that bounce! It seems like more and more pharmacies are willing to sell individual pens now. Have you gotten the lantus discount coupon card thingie, so your pens will be $25 each (for 6 refills)?

Have a great evening, Carla!

It is Fruth's Pharmacy. I haven't had a chance to look for the discount card yet. It's been a busy evening. I hope they will accept it.

Good luck with the pen, Carla. You use it just like a vial. If they try to sell you the needles that fit in the pen (humans use these), decline them. We simply use the pen like a vial (it has a rubber gasket, just like a vial) and draw the insulin out with a syringe. My local Kinney's pharmacy sells individual pens. My vet wrote a prescription for the box of 5 (15 ml.), but the pharmacy itself prefers to sell the pens singly. In any event, make sure that your vet specifies refills.

I hope Furball comes down soon from that bounce!

Stay warm!!

Yellow beats pink and blue is even better. You can do it, Furball! Good for your vet! Our vet likes to talk to us because she always learns something new. We were the first clients to use a pen, too.

Hi Carla, I hope your girl keeps on coming down into the blues and greens. I tried asking places like Walmart about selling just one SoloStar pen and of course, they wouldn't do it. However, I checked with a local pharmacy and the manager said he would sell just one because they break the boxes up anyways when they sell to nursing homes. So if all else fails, you may want to check with local nursing homes and find out who supplies them with insulin and then check with that pharmacy. Just a thought. Crazy how we have to run around and chase our tails just to get some insulin for our furbabies...and try to find it at a price that won't send us into bankruptcy. Hope you all stay warm tonight and tomorrow!
