Time for the vet! George is not going to be happy lol
I printed out my SS and will be informing the vet that I want a 3 month supply of lantus, just so i have it. Is this a smart idea? I know lantus has a shelf life of 3 months when closed and refrigerated, so i want extra so i dont have to go to the pharmacy again haha

Good luck at the vet!
Lantus should last technically until the expiration date if kept refrigerated properly.
Many people use a vial for 5 or so months.

I like a box of 5 pens. Smaller amounts in them lasts several months depending on your dose.
And if you drop a pen you have more pens. Less risky. (Same cost as a vial).
I pay $35 with Good Rx Coupon at my pharmacy.

You want the Lantus pens not the 10 ml bottle. The prescription has to specify the pens. The box of five pens is at least a year's supply you have on hand. It will last to the expiration date printed on the box. Each pen is good to the last drop which can be a few months depending on the cat's dose. Ask the pharmacist to check the expiration date on the box and give you one that has the furthest date out, at least a year.

Keep the box of pens in the fridge where it won't be jostled and bumped around.

Is there a pen option for one unit instead of 3 units? Because all im seeing are 3 unit pens
 
Each pen contains 3 ml (300 units) of Lantus. A box contains five pens.

Some pharmacists may sell a single 3 ml pen at their discretion.

If you buy the box and end up not using it all because your cat goes OTJ, you can offer the unused pens to another FDMB member through the Supply Closet forum or see if the Diabetic Cats In Need organization can use them. Or maybe your vet knows of a client who is struggling and could use the pens.
 
Update: Vet visit went good. He has medication for his ears because he has a minor ear infection, and he has antibiotics for a tooth infection. They said once he stablizes in his diabetes that an extraction would be reccomended
 
The infection might be what raised his bg and if so he would become diet controlled soon after the extraction and the infection being resolved. That would mean no more insulin. I don’t know why your vet won’t do it now. His bg is pretty good.

I started with a vial and after about 6 months had to throw out a lot of insulin but was able to use each pen to the last drop.

Make sure the medication for the ear does not contain a steroid as if it does it will raise the bg. Same with any liquid antibiotics.

Does anyone know of any financial assistance for dental costs? Its estimated to be between 1.6k-4k for the dental surgery including bloodwork, anesthesia etc. I started a gofundme but I dont think im allowed to post it here. I need financial assistance for this
 
If you have had bloodwork recently it should not be needed again. On main there’s something on financial assistance. When I needed a dental for a cat many years ago the receptionist told me I might want to rob a bank, lol.

The vet has this part backwards, not uncommon. Cats often can't get stabilized without getting dental work done. Interesting note from the Feline VMA (vet medical association) website section on feline diabetes, FAQ. In the question "is anesthesia safe in diabetic patients" is a good answer on fasting protocols and the following quote:
Uncontrolled diabetes or increased age should not be considered a reason to avoid dental care under anesthesia.

Later on it talks about dental disease interfering with diabetic control.
 
Never used CareCredit but if it’s deferred interest just make sure you pay it on time or they’ll hit you with the interest on the full financed amount.
