Kaz has both diabetes and now kidney issues. I have been researching looking for a plan and I wondered if anyone had tried the following with any amount of success.
Thinking DM for breakfast and then NF for the three snacks during the day then NF for dinner and DM for three snacks overnight???
Anyone has tried this approach please let me know.
Using a combination of Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets NF (for kidney support) and Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets DM (for diabetes management) is a common veterinary-approved strategy to address the conflicting nutritional needs of cats with both kidney disease and diabetes, but it requires strict monitoring.
Is This Combination Good for Both?
Yes, it can be effective because it addresses the most critical needs of each disease:

Is This Combination Good for Both?
Yes, it can be effective because it addresses the most critical needs of each disease:
- NF (Kidney): Provides restricted phosphorus and reduced protein to reduce workload on the kidneys.
- DM (Diabetes): Provides high protein and low carbohydrates to stabilize blood sugar.
- The Balancing Act: Cats with both conditions need phosphorus restriction (from the NF diet) but also need high-quality protein to maintain muscle mass (often supplied by the DM diet), making a blended approach beneficial to prevent malnutrition while protecting kidneys.
- Purina Pro Plan NF (Kidney Function Advanced Care) Wet: Contains approximately 0.39% phosphorus on a dry matter basis (which is restricted to support kidney function).
- Purina Pro Plan DM (Dietetic Management): While formulated primarily for diabetes, it is often formulated to also support urinary health, but it generally has higher phosphorus levels than the specialized NF formula.
