Oliver is hypo at 51 following first dose of prozinc.

Still, he has earned a reduction today and we will restart at a smaller dose.

He will probably bounce from the 51 today, but it’s all right. The high carb stuff you gave will all be gone after 2 hours and it won’t be the cause of the bounce if he has one. The bounce will be caused by the hormones and stored sugars creating insulin resistance (that I told you about in your previous thread.) That can’t be helped.

The +2 small meal is quite important to help prevent steep drops around the time that the ProZinc onsets (begins to lower BG.) With new members, I usually recommend a small meal at +2 and +4. Some cats need another snack around +6, but feeding much after nadir can shorten the duration of the insulin and cause BG to rise too quickly.

I am sorry. I thought we had gone over his feeding schedule — or it may have been buried somewhere in the many posts of the previous thread.
Yes I don’t think we really talked about feeding unless I totally missed it. 😅

When my cat first hit 68, I had been told (in a facebook group… not this group) that 68 was my “take action number” for my ReliOn Premier meter. First, that was not correct about 68 being my take action number (it should have been below 50) but I just wanted to share with you that I freaked out and gave him an entire can of Fancy Feast gravy Lovers food. He loved it, of course, and I sent him skyrocketing into high numbers. We’ve all been there before, and you have more reason than most of us to freak out since Oliver was in the 20s at one point!

So do we hold off on insulin tonight and try tomorrow at a lower dose? Or what’s the best course of action? Friday is going to be tricky as I have to be gone a good portion of the day.

I feel most comfortable holding off until Saturday when I know I can do frequent checks for the first couple days.

Okay. I was going to suggest skipping tonight’s shot and giving only .2 units tomorrow and making sure he eats at least a tablespoon or two of fopd at +2 and +4 — and making sure to het a +2 test before the snack - to make sure there are no surprises later in the cycle. Then food again at +4.

So nobody is going to be home on Friday at all (nobody who can test him?)

If we start with the .2 tomorrow and you are home to feed and test, then we will have a good idea of how he will handle that small dose. And if nobody is going to be around on Friday then skip Friday’s shot.

We can work with that. My daughter can check him at +4 on Friday before she goes to work. I just worry about things not looking good and then she is at work and I’m not here to help. There will be a 4-5 hr period when neither of us will be here. My other daughter could check on him while we are gone but probably not check bg or be equipped to handle a low. She’s my oldest so you’d think she could manage but has a toddler that makes things difficult. But I should still train her on how to help with the Oliver. It takes a village right?! Just probably not have her responsible for his safety in the early days. So I guess Friday just depends on how tomorrow looks. It just makes me a little nervous because he did okay even in the 4 units the first day he was on it and it was the second day that he crashed.

I would not give him insulin on Friday. It sounds too complicated!
