Spreadsheet for calculating food (carb) values from product data

Hi, this board and it's members have been a fantastic source of support and info in the last month while I have been adjusting to having a newly diabetic cat. I have been using a UK Foods List from here as a guide so massive thank you to the members who made and maintain this

I have now made a spreadsheet that does all the maths for you, so if you want to try a new food you can check it's values with this. I've left a few foods in it just to give an idea of where everything goes but I was intending for it to function as a calculator really

this is the spreadsheet:

Just as a caveat if you're also new or don't know this. Overall carb content isn't the only thing that can cause raised BG - sometimes 'various sugars' are listed as an ingredient - be wary of these. Also certain proteins or particular ingredients can affect some cats

Oh I have just adjusted values for calorie calc- 1g protein = 3.5cal, 1g fat = 8.5cal, 1g carb = 3.5cal, I didn't realise it was different to standard human caloric numbers

Welcome to FDMB, perhaps this carb calculator as well, can help you to find out the carbs for each food you feed, you will use the nutrients of the food on the label, insert that in the calculator cell, the dry matter carb, is the true carb content to look for. A diabetic cat needs to have a diet between 0-10%, wet can food, or raw, most members feed up to 5%, and staying away from gravy foods as well most are anywhere from 16-24% carbs and kibbles they are between 20-30% carbs, and remember that for ProZinc, the protocol is test, feed, shoot, I shoot Corky as he is eating, and is good to test again at +2 ProZinc reacts two hours after shooting, as well is recommended to feed the two main meals AMPS/PMPS a small snack at +2 after testing and several small meals or snack during the day this way you keep the insulin Depot in check

I didn't find that before - my spreadsheet does that now and I can track the different foods with it so works better for me, thanks that is definitely useful

Yes I think we are getting there, I like I'm seeing more yellow preshots as well. Not sure what todays +10.30 was about. Maybe a dodgy strip

Nice yellows today!! And Yes! You’re getting there maybe in the next couple of days we’ll see some blues, with ProZinc you can shoot low, so if you are hesitant about the BG one hour before posts us and we can help you, I shoot Corky on low 2 digits, but it took a lot of preparation mentally for me to do so, but is better to shoot then miss a shot, for ProZinc anything under 50BG IS a start of hypo, so post us if you are not sure if you get to have low blues, better to post us before missing a shot

We have some yellows today as well, but still high, I am wondering if you are feeding several small meals during the day, especially 2 hours after shooting, a small snacks like low carb treat, I myself give Corky 1 slice if a thick sliced ham 1% carb , I purchase it either at Walmart or Publix called Frick's Ham, and if you notice Corky's remarks you can see to get an idea how much, when and what I feed during a day period, by giving these small meals it helps keep the insulin depot, have you been able to calculate the dry matter cabs on the food you are feeding to double check with the calculator?

Feeding is all low carb wet + he's had pancreatitis so need to keep fat lowish and also I think regular eating seems to help with it. First food with his shot then free fed after till about 4-5 hours before his PM shot. I pick up all the food then , although I didn't on Friday evening as was ill- you can see his pspm was high. I'm in the UK so treats are different but I've got him single ingredient freeze dried meat treats which he loves so he's happy

He's quite a big cat for the UK. He does eat a lot but his weight is stable at the moment. I will likely look to try and get 0.5-1kg off him in the future but just want to get him regulated for now

Good morning, I’m glad you are feeding several meals, I want to make sure about something, you say he’s free feeding , is it kibbles? And if he’s free feeding just before a shot, his BG will always be high, that’s why a schedule feeding is so important example: AMPS FULL MEAL ,shot, +2 test, snack, +6 small meal or snacks, PMPS FULL MEAL, shot, and last meal or snack at +4 or +5 no feeding after +6, unless necessary because of very low BG, if you can feed on this schedule and test +2 before snack and as you are doing throughout the day Bud can be regulated faster

@CORKY - Her signature indicates she's feeding low carb wet food. Also, Prozinc is not a depot type of insulin which you refer to in the post above.

What we typically tell members is to consider how much you feed your cat during each cycle. You can divide that amount of food into however many "meals" you want to feed. You can base the amount on what your cat's numbers tell you and how the particular insulin works. Knowing when insulin onset and nadir fall will help you make those decisions.

I deleted the depot portions, the reason I asked about the kibbles, is because as he said Bud is free feeding during the night, so I was wondering if it was Kibbes!, I do know Bud is eating low carbs, thank you for your notations
