I’ve moved around on the dose amount the past three days, which I know I need to stabilize. I can’t stay up nights to test for big drops, so I am ok with the blue zone. I’d like to keep her low in the blue however. At 124 last night, I gave only .05 again, thinking she might go too low (I was thinking this AM I might be able to switch to .05 twice daily, for the total 1 unit the vet wanted her on daily). AMPS is 170 though .. higher than I was hoping, so now I feel like I need to go back to the 1 unit twice daily. It was working until I got spooked by the sudden big drop in numbers on the 16th, and not understanding why that happened, so I can head it off. My concern is I just can’t stay up overnight testing to see if she drops low. I need a happy medium range.

What if I keep her at 1 unit twice daily, but give her a higher carb dinner? Would that keep her from dropping as much at night, or does that mess with her system also? Is that a crazy idea? I don’t have the knowledge to know if it is way out of the realm of reasonable.

I moved back to 1 unit this AM, and I know I need to quit changing it up on her.

Ok let’s get back to your question.

I’m not sure why you shot 0.5u last night. I know the night before you were a bit worried about the PS and couldn’t stay up.

I don’t think your vet understands how Lantus works but we find that often. She does need 1u twice a day at this time.

Is it possible to always get a +2 every night? And can you shoot earlier so you have time to also get a before bed test to decide if she needs some higher carb food? Sometimes, just feeding a LC food on the higher end works (eg 10% calories from carbs). We really don’t know how carb sensitive she is and that important to find out.

If you drop her to 0.5u twice a day, you will probably see some BGs in the high 100s and maybe higher. It’s hard to say. But she’s doing well and you have the opportunity to get her into remission quickly.

If you look around at some other SSs, you’ll see most cats are really bouncing from lower numbers but she hasn’t.

Thank you. I shot out of fear of going too low overnight when I wouldn’t be up. I was thinking maybe she would be good with splitting the vet’s prescribed dose in half and administering it two times daily. Then she went up at +2 and I realized I was mistaken. So, I will go back to a consistent 1 unit.

I just tried to get blood at the +10 .. 6 sticks later, not enough volume to test. All afternoon it was fine .. all of a sudden it dries up. Any ideas why that happens? I used heat and massage.

I will try again at 9:15 pm. I need to shoot at 9:45 tonight (backing it up toward 9:30 again, after shooting at 10 this morning). If anyone is around to look at her numbers before bed, it would be appreciated. My 12 hour schedule does run late, but I can’t change that at this time. I will stay up for the + 2 tonight and use your advice on HC food if numbers are lower.

I’m not sure what you are asking?
You copied one of my posts but didn’t add anything so I wondered if you had a question but I just saw you added another post under it. There is a learning curve to using the “reply” button but the advantage is that I then get a tag to respond to you.

Are you poking the same ear or rotating? It’s hard to say why her ears bled earlier but not now. They do eventually learn to bleed well.

I’m up for a bit but I won’t be for the +2. If you get to a point where you can change your schedule, let us know and we can help you sort it out.

Ok, thanks. She’s at 119 now, so I guess I’ll shoot 1 unit. It was suggested to me that I might start shooting .75. Do you have a thought about that?

I’m confused by the protocol that says not to shoot under 150, but last night, at 124, I should have given her 1u. Is 119 safe to shoot 1u if I give her some HC food? I’m going to have to shoot within the next 5 mins if you are around.

I am. It is a safe number but it would be the lowest you’ve shot.

You are correct the protocol says new members shouldn’t shoot under 150 without assistance. We teach you to shoot lower and lower. There isn’t any difference between 119 and 124 as each meter has a 20% variation.

Whether you shoot 0.5u or 1u, the cycle will be the same for most of it because of the depot. If you feed HC, it wears off in two hours so you would have to see where she is at +2. If she’s lower, you could give her more HC but if she’s in green, you would need to keep a close eye on her.

Just to add: most members are setting an alarm to get up and check BGs from time to time and the better she does, the more likely that is.

I wish I could stay up to your +2 but I’ve been up since 4 am.

I am grateful you are here to advise at any time .. I certainly don’t expect you to stay up all night with me. Sleep well.
