Can anyone help me make sense of these BG numbers?

I’ve tested my non diabetic (but epileptic) cat too a couple times, he’s between 45-65ish.
Clarence didn’t really show anything when he was in the mid 50’s or even at 36, but the fact he doesn’t show it makes me worry more because he has dropped low so randomly and I’m afraid I won’t notice. He’s slower when his numbers are really high.
I was told on a Dutch forum to treat anything from 72 and lower as a hypo, and to feed or at least monitor closely when he goes below 90?

As long as you are using a human meter then the “take action “ number is when the cat drops below 50, meaning that you want to monitor carefully. Oftentimes you just need to feed regular food and test in 20 minutes, but at first if you don’t know your cat’s patterns you can use medium carb as well or even high carb and test in 20-30 to make sure numbers are stable or rising. Giving high carb food or honey/corn syrup when a cat is in the 60s or higher is really going to shoot them up too high and disrupt the cycle. Having said that, I totally understand the fear of hypo and I had been told that my human meter read more like a pet meter (which was not correct) and when my cat first hit 68 I freaked out and fed him a whole can of Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers food. That was totally the wrong thing to do. We feed small amounts when managing hypos and he wasn’t even hypo. I skyrocketed him up by a couple hundred points.

Anyway, at first the lower numbers can be frightening. After a while you love to see your cat spend as much time as possible in the greens since they are the numbers where the pancreas can heal and hopefully aid the cat toward remission.

Hi. How is Clarence doing. It look like today (based on your tests) that you could have tried a 1.5 unit dose with that 229 AMPS. Good job tracking what happened because if you had not, then we could not be sure about that. He is making progress. His bounces are taking less time to clear, he goes back down, but unfortunately he then heads back up — but not for too long. I see this a lot and it’s progress. How is he feeling, eating, acting?

Hi, Clarence indeed keeps bouncing, and I think I should maybe keep this dose for another full week? The vet wants to go up, but today he’s having a pretty good day again so far. 324 AMPS, down to 101 at +2 and now at +4 he’s at 160. He most often seems to have early nadirs.
We had one day where he stayed really high on 09/05, but I had to have someone else give him his shot and I’m almost sure that must have been a fur shot. After that day tests did show ketones unfortunately, 0.9. Next day trace ketones and none since.
I was doubting what to do with the 229 PS, but next time I’ll only shave a little bit off his dose and monitor.

Other than his wacky numbers Clarence seems to be doing fine, still very active and playful and he’s gained a little bit of weight. He’s eating well, although he has developed a bit of a habit of not wanting to finish his food before his shot. Shots were a huge problem with his in the beginning, as soon as he felt the needle poke he would launch himself into the air. There’s only one thing he loves so much that he’ll let me give an injection without jumping, and that’s raw beef (and it needs to be steak, lol), so he gets 2-3 tiny bits of beef while I give him his shot. He now takes a couple bites of his food and then comes running into the kitchen screaming for his beef. After the beef+shot he goes back and finishes his food.

Wow. Look at those blues today. Awesome. I'm really excited. Because of the 101 early nadir you caught today, I do not recommend increasing the dose at this time. Let's at least give him time to clear his next bounce (assuming he is going to continue his pattern of bouncing) to see what he does after that. We have to ignore the highs in this instance and focus on nadirs and a nadir of 101 is within the target range for SLGS, which you are following at this time. We want to keep him safe. He will be safe as long as he stays at 50 or above, but with SLGS we keep them a little higher. As long as his ketones are low, we can continue to follow SLGS for now.

I'm also sitting here laughing at Clarence and his steak! What a clever boy he is. If I were a cat I would scream for my steak, too! Being active and playful and gaining weight is HUGE -- great to hear. It's okay if he doesn't finish all his food at shot time. As long as he eats at least half his normal portion I wouldn't worry about it at all -- just save the food for a +1 or +2 snack. He continues to have drops that are much steeper than we want them to be, so the snacks are important. Clarence clearly does things his own way! So good that the ketones went back down after the .9 -- it's great that you are checking. Any time you want to make me laugh telling me about Clarence's other antics, I'll be happy to hear about them! :cat:

I do notice he’s completely back to his old self when he’s in the blues. He has never been really lethargic, but he’s noticeably slower when he’s in the high numbers. I woke up in the middle of the night (because he decided my face was a good place to lie down) and checked his BG at +5, 157.
This morning he was at +10 he was at 383, but dropped down to 275 at AMPS. I’ve noticed he’s done that several times, high numbers in the early morning that go down a bit again at his PS time.

He’s not really bouncing today like he usually does, he stays flat but a lot lower, all yellow. I gave him the 1.75U, I don’t have to be up early so I can monitor the next couple hours and will set an alarm for +6.

Clarence also had another blood test last Friday, and vet just called with the result. Everything is within range, except a slightly high WBC. He also has some mild gingivitis. No problems with eating and he still lets me brush his teeth without fussing, also nearly no visible tartar. Vet said to just watch the gingivitis as it’s mild, but I read that dental problems can also cause cats to be hard to regulate?

Good numbers today!! Keep up the good work! You mentioned a flat yellow cycle from a few days ago and I see that on his spreadsheet. Just be aware that a flat yellow cycles can indicate a bounce os going to break (which I see it dod later that evening.). I am happy to hear his bloodwork was good. I guess the WBC wasn’t high enough for them to think he needed antibiotics? Tooth troubles can cause high BG, but it sounds like he only has mild gingivitis so it’s just something to keep an eye on. He lets you brush his teeth! That’s fantastic.

Whoop whoop, blues 3 days in a row, that’s a lot better than it’s been lately!

No they didn’t think he needed antibiotics, as it was only mildly elevated and actually less than at the time of his diagnosis. I’ve always brushed his teeth, but I’ve been doing so more frequently for the past year or so. Clarence has wonky teeth and a bit of an overbite. He isn’t exactly an ambassador for the breed, lol. He’s also extremely cross eyed and has a curled/kinked tail. Oh and he’s built weird and VERY tall. The vet even thought of acro but he has always looked like that, he is a Klinefelter (xxy instead of xy chromosomes) and those tend to be very large. We know because he has a couple small red spots so he’s technically a calico point, which of course should be impossible for a male, so he must have an extra X chromosome.
To me he is the prettiest boy in the world, but he’s definitely ‘unusual’ looking, and we picked him on character, lol. He came from a reputable breeder, but it seems he lost the genetic lottery.

Oh and forgot to add, I need to start watching his weight… in nearly 2 months time he’s gone from 14lbs 5oz to 16lbs 4oz! Which is actually a good weight for him, he’s certainly not overweight and he was too skinny, but at the rate he’s packing on weight seems a bit concerning.

This weight gain is a good sign! Of course you don’t want him to be overweight and you can monitor his weight, but it’s fantastic that he is at a healthier weight now!

Aaawww. I love Clarence. That’s very interesting about his markings. It is extremely rare (and sought after) for the males to have three colors like a calico (female.) But he came from a Siamese breeder, right?

Now… about his spreadsheet… I love the blue! If je were my cat, I would increase to 2 units. I think we need to lower those blues a bit and hopefully lower the preshot numbers a little. He’s been making good progress! I am happy for him. How os he acting? Does he seem to feel better in the blue?
