9/24 Dallas Spot Check 133 (1 year in remission)

Hey everyone! Hopefully I am just back temporarily! Dallas has been in remission for over 1 year and doing great other than a bout with Pancreatitis about 2 months ago. I checked him yesterday and his BG was 148, so I checked him again today 2 hours after eating and it was 133. What should I do? Should I be concerned?

Hi Michelle. Does he need a dental by any chance? It’s the most common reason for falling out of remission . Has the pancreatitis cleared? I’d check 3 hours after eating for a few days both am and pm and see if he doesn’t adjust. Tagging others for input. @Wendy&Neko @Bron and Sheba (GA) @Bandit's Mom

He does need dental work and unfortunately his appointment is only in February. That was the earliest his vet could book him in as she only does dentistries once a week. I hope he can get in earlier on a cancellation. He also didn’t get his Solensia dose this month due to financial difficulties, but I am going to pick some up tomorrow.
I’ll check him again tonight.

It’s the teeth for sure. If you can swing it financially I would ask your vet for a referral to another vet that could do it sooner. Otherwise Dallas is likely going to need to go back on insulin. I know his expensive it is here as one of mine needed a tooth pulled and a dental so I had to add their care club in addition to my pet insurance so I could pay it off over the year without interest. Good thing I did it as she’s needed lots of vet visits which are not covered by insurance so I saved money.

I'll ask his vet if she can refer Dallas to someone else for a dentistry. I have a hard time trusting another vet, especially for something like dental surgery because he has Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy and the vet has to implement anesthetic recommendations from his Cardiologist. She's already done two dental surgeries on him and everything went well. She's been his vet for ~12 years.

Also, he went OTJ almost exactly 1 year ago! Almost to the day. Last time he was kicked out of remission it was close to that 1 year mark as well. It's as if he can't stay in remission for more than a year.

Edit: We've been giving him Fortiflora the last few weeks. Could that spike his BG? And we had to change his food about a month ago because the TikiCat he used to eat is now discontinued. He eats Rawz Beef and beef liver, but from what I saw it was sugar cat approved.

I would be afraid to trust another vet too. It’s just so long to wait. Are you in a cancellation list? Maybe she will squeeze him in sooner if she knows he’s falling out of remission?

I'm going to call them first thing tomorrow morning and ask! I also used to work there for 3 years, so they do give me special treatment sometimes lol.

I'll check him again tomorrow morning 3 hours after his meal.

See if your vet can recommend a dental vet specialist. That's who I went to with Neko when she had HCM. They do extra monitoring during anaesthesia and often have access to a board certified anesthesiologist vet.

I haven't heard of Fortiflora spiking BG, or doing anything other than being a flavour enhancer. Is that why you are giving it? Sometimes protein changes can cause some tummy upsets and raise numbers. Have you tried a Rawz with the same proteins as the TikiCat he was getting?

Yes, that why we started giving it to him. He wasn’t eating when he had Pancreatitis, unless we put Fortiflora in his food. Now he’ll eat without it, but we did keep giving it to him just because he loves it.

The Rawz he’s eating is the exact same protein as the Tiki Cat he was eating. They were both beef and beef liver.
