9/22 Smudge: AMPS 389, +2 151, +4.5 103, +5.5 118, +9 223, PMPS 287, +2.5 278

Someone probably asked this recently and I missed it so sorry if this is redundant -- does he still have an infection?
Infection, no. Wound, yes. It looks much better than a month ago, but it is still taking eternity to heal because of the FD. The abscess "hole" is fully filled in and has beautiful granular tissue formed, but the outer skin layer has not started growing yet. There is one small "string" of tissue that is hanging (healthy tissue, not infected or necrotic) that I have to watch that will hopefully bind or fall off after the skin layer heals over. If not, he will get it snipped back. He still gets Animax put on it twice per day. The Convenia shot should have worn off as of today as well.

I do wonder if his body working overtime to heal this affects his numbers. :(

Good morning Alli!
Oh how I hate those bounces!
I know it's body's defense mechanisms but it's so frustrating to see a high BG after having a good cycle!
Hope he clears it soon! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi Alli, I’ve just been reading back on your journey with Smudge. It is not quite a month since the DKA and hospitalisation and he is doing well. Is he eating well? And are you still testing for ketones in the Urine ?
It sounds as if you are doing a good job with the wound. Abscesses can take a while to fill in with healthy tissue if they were deep or infected.

Come on down gently, Smudge. You’re doing so great with all of his complexities Alli!! He’s so lucky to be in your amazing care and have found your love.
Have a safe day :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

He is eating like a piggy as usual. The only time he isn't interested is sometimes when he's in the greens and I have to hand feed him to keep him from dipping (this is not common).

Haven't gotten a blood ketone test, ran out of strips and waiting for more. He's learning to use new litter boxes throughout the house and I'm not interrupting that for urine strips just yet.

It was a VERY deep abscess. The healing has been great (minus a second infection that has now cleared), but extremely slow.

It is pretty important to get ketones tests still post DKA if at all possible. Even a couple of times a week would be good. It is good he is eating. So he’s not just staying in your room now, he’s out and about the house?

I got a test 3 noons ago that was 0.1. Planning to get one as soon as I get more strips.

Oh yes, he's been out and about in the house all day long for 2+ weeks now. I would put him in his room for tests and meals (so Penny couldn't get his food and vice versa), as well as overnight to give Penny a break while they acclimated. He is finally 100% using his microchip feeder in closed position as of last night, so tonight will be his first full night of being allowed to be out with her. :bighug:

careful what you wish for you could get a green PMPS!

let me tell you, the first time that happened....woooo boy. I had to summon all my courage to shoot the full dose -- but he stayed flat and safe.

It is actually not a bad idea to start thinking about how you are going to handle it if and when it happens. Try to mentally prepare!

The idea of him staying flat all day for a green PMPS scared me into a +9 - he's 223, so probably not today. But that nervousness tells me I definitely need to mentally prepare. I sure hope he gets some reductions before that day comes.

Come on Smudge! Mikan's waiting for a clam hunting date at beach
He got so close today!! Stepped into the sand, but not into the water. Maybe tonight. :cat:

You’re doing a great job.

It can be nerve wracking to shoot a green, as others have noted. I used a human meter (a OneTouch Ultra) back in the day, which ran very close to lab results. I also later had an AT was a backup, as well as a slew other meters because, well, data junkie. Anyway, what I found gave me some confidence/reassurance was to get a “reality check” as to how my meter read compared to, say, another meter or my AT. So, since you have both, you could always “prove” to yourself that your human meter really does run lower than the AT, and that the 50-100 green numbers are truly “safe.” Just a thought. Take it for what it’s worth. :)

Thank you so much. I honestly didn't even think to do this... When I see the lower numbers for preshot, my mind goes a bit blank still. I need to remember this when the day comes for the greens. :nailbiting::D

Hi Alli,
I started out with AT2 and when I transitioned from AT2 to a human meter, I used both from the same pool of blood to see what the differences are like.
I have those data in Mikan's SS - 3rd tab at the bottom labelled AT2 vs FSL. I still use both sometimes, just to make sure I'm not getting fooled with a bad strip. Also, when it gets too low, I sometimes se AT2 to assure myself that Mikan's number isn't horribly dangerous. We are all so prone to worry about our babies, you know! I struggle with it a lot too :p
