Butters & Lyla

Today, no change. Continuing cerenia and buprenorphine, and added in ondansetron. Butters's vet called this morning to check on her. He is going to give me a couple of doses of injectable cerenia to have on hand, just in case.

Other than that, he said he wished the ER had run bloodwork, especially in light of her other issues. He said it's hard to be sure that it is a pancreatitis flare otherwise. But, he said to continue with the meds, make sure she is staying hydrated and eating well, and as long as there is improvement then I don't need to bring her in.

Surf safely, kitties. :cat:

Morning, Lyla - has the vomiting settled down, or is Butters still vomiting? At least the vet felt she wasn't dehydrated at the time, but that was a few days ago, so I'd keep an eye on that, if you are finding that Butters is still having episodes. I don't recall if they sent you home with sub-q fluids? You probably know this, but you can check to see if she is dehydrated by pinching the skin, around the neck area, and it should bounce right back. The other way is to feel her gums, you want them to be shiny and slick, if they are sticky, she may be dehydrated. Hope the meds help, is she eating okay at least, or still acting nauseous? Couldn't catch up with Butters yesterday, since I was otherwise occupied (ie work, which sometimes gets in my way ). Hoping Butters feels better soon.

I am so sorry to hear about your girl. Many prayers that she gets her appetite back. When I had my stage 4 CKD cat Simon at home with me, in the last couple of weeks, I found the sub-q fluids really helped him. He felt better afterward and would eat just a little. I think Christie has a good idea. I don't know if you have ever done them but it is relatively easy but best if you have someone holding her. Again, I am sorry to hear that she and you are going through this.

Oh Lyla, I just feel so awful for Butters. I'm glad your vet gave you the injectable cerenia to have on hand.
I hope all the meds help and she improves so you won't have to bring her in.
This girl has been through too much.
My heart breaks for her ♥:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thanks for checking in today and for the good wishes for Butters:bighug:. She hasn't vomited since the episodes on Monday. She ate well yesterday. Today has been more of a challenge, as she was acting nauseous this morning and wouldn't eat anything. She was also drooling a lot and spitting out her favourite treats (cooked cubes of pork). I gave her 2mg ondansetron, waited an hour, and then she ate a treat and she ate her meal. She has been eating her meals since then, but refusing the treats. I'm giving ondansetron every 7 hours or so, and continuing cerenia and bupe. I have cyproheptadine if I need an appy stim. Her vet told me that if she does vomit while on the anti-nausea meds, to bring her in right away because she shouldn't be vomiting through the cerenia and ondansetron, in his opinion.

I'm checking her gums and skin for signs of dehydration, so far so good. Thanks for the suggestion on that. I've been adding lots of water to her food, which I normally do, and she is lapping it all up. Hopefully she keeps eating her meals. The ER didn't send her home with sub-q fluids, but I am going to buy a bag and the equipment needed to administer, so that I can try to do them myself. I haven't done it before and butters is far from cooperative:cat:. I have the link to Marje's video and that's how I'd have to learn! I also see she posted a link to a harness, so I may have to get one of those as well.

Remind me again how much Butters weighs? Dosing on ondansetron is 0.5-1.0 mg/kg. But I was happy to read "ate willingly" for her PMPS fuds. :) Get better Butters.

Thanks Wendy. She looks utterly miserable, doesn't seem to be feeling great, but I'm hoping this too shall pass:).
The ER weighed her at 4.22kg. I've been giving her 2mg per dose. Is that enough? I guess I could give her more, but I'm also giving her 8mg cerenia every 24 hours.

For some reason I remembered her as a bigger cat. Looks like the dose is good to start, though you do have room to increase if that's what she needs. Cerenia and ondansetron target different nausea receptors, so it's not like one adds onto the other. It's so hard, balancing pain relief and nausea to see what helps.

It is lower than she had been by around .5kg, so she is probably still smaller than you remember, but I checked her weight from when she was at the vet several weeks ago and it was 4.77kg. I haven't weighed her myself in about a week, so I'll have to do that. Hopefully she hasn't lost a bunch of weight. That would be concerning.
It is definitely quite the balancing act. She has absolutely had it with the pilling and BG checks. I think she is still in some pain but I don't think I can increase the bupe. I hate to say it, but I may have no choice but to give her some gabapentin as well. Poor cat. She was doing so well with the all green numbers, too.

Oh my goodness! Butters! This is my first time checking on you this week, and I am so sorry for what you are going through Lyla and Butters!

I know with Pearl, it's often tough to recognize Pancreatitis flares. We just do the Cerenia and Buprenorphine whenever the symptoms show up. I am glad she was well enough to come home and has been improving! I tend not to test her Pancreatitis bloodwork unless something like hospitalization level happens. Are you also doing some sub q fluids? That could also help get her back on track.

Sounds like your vet and mine are soul buddies, mine would have handled the situation exactly the same way. Staying home and comfy helps minimize that STRESS too.

So weird, Pearl just had a bout I suspected was Pancreatitis and it didn't much affect her BG either, like Butters. Does Butters typically get BG increases too with the Pancreatitis?

Hang in there ladies! :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:
