I am not really sure what Sammy is doing with the insulin, but he is definitely not using it. This will be the fifth cycle that we haven't seen any green. I am going to remove both the ConSeal and the Orijen Boar treats to see if either of them are part of the problem. I don't think either of them are, but I want to rule them out before increasing. My thought is if I am not seeing some lower numbers by tomorrow morning then I will probably increase a bit tomorrow night. I am just not sure how much I want to increase, because .25 was getting Sammy into the 40's, and I don't want to push him too low by doubling that dose.
 
The ConSeal doesn't affect Trix's BGs, but of course ECID. When she was on the juice, she was sensitive to even minor tweaks, so I often did "fat" and "skinny" doses....so maybe try fattening his current dose rather than doing a full .25U increase to see if that works. Also...how old is the juice? Could something have cause it to lose it's potency?

@Amy&TrixieCat I started a new pen on 4/29, so it has been used for over 60 days. I have heard that they can be used right up to the end even as old as 6 months. I started this pen when the other pen had gotten a bubble in it. I was told that the bubble doesn't cause a problem, but I was nervous that it would stop working and I wouldn't think about that being a problem. Do you think I should start a new pen. I would hate to start a new pen only to find out that isn't the problem because then that starts the count down on the new pen. I don't mind starting a new pen and just tossing the remainder of this one if that is the best option.

Last night just after shot time Sammy was outside and was frightened by fireworks that were being put off a couple doors down. He high tailed it into the house and was a little freaked out for a few minutes once he got inside, but later in the evening when they were going off all over the place it didn't seem to bother him, but I just don't know.

It's possible that it could be petering out at this point. Some people do get a long time out of the juice, and others don't...for whatever reason. There have been times I thought it was the pen, started a new one, and found it wasn't the pen. Those time, once I realized the old juice was OK, I would alternate back and forth between the old and the new pen (one week "old", one week "new") to minimize the waste, making notes in the SS as to which pen I was using when.

Since he was startled by the fireworks last night, I would wonder if that is coming in to play, too.
 
I've used pens with bubbles and had no issues. Sammy needs a dental I believe. In fact if my memory is right he's never had one. Something to think about if I'm remembering right is its better to do sooner than later because other issues can come up making it not as safe.

Okay, thanks. I might try that alternating thing if we can't figure it out.

@Jill & Alex (GA) , He had blood work on 5/22. the labs are on his spreadsheet. We went to the vet last week and the vet was suppose to run a full panel and it wasn't until the next day that I found out he only did the Thyroid. I will probably have to take him in to have more blood drawn for a full work up.

If we do go in for another blood draw, what should I have them test for. When we went in last week I was most concerned about a possible infection and I mentioned that to the doctor, but apparently I forgot. I did overwhelm him a bit with information, as it was the first time we saw this vet. Our other doctor moved.

Anyway, let me know if you think we should get more blood work and what tests we should do.

Sammy has only gone up today. This evening although he has gone right to the food dish when I put it down, he really hasn't eaten much. I am going to call another vet tomorrow and see if I can't get him in for a full blood work up and dental prep stuff. I don't like having to go to a new vet and having a major procedure done right off the bat but I am really not confident in the people at the old practice, and the other doctor we saw last week didn't really seem that interested. I would much prefer to take him to his original vet, but she is much further away. If I can work it out at all I will really try to do that. Otherwise I have to do the best that I can.

What is the procedure for prepping for a dental?
 
The vet will want to have blood work within the last six months before doing any anesthesia, including a dental. They may look at the mouth, but so much can be hidden below the gum line that can only show up on a dental X-Ray. Make sure the dentist does that. Tina, talk to your vet. Explain how Sammy's need for insulin appears to wax and wane from one day to the next. Ask him/her what they think. Ask about possible causes. Given the circumstances, see what tests the vet thinks would be appropriate at this time.

Has your vet ever mentioned wanting to do an ultrasound? Personally, I've always jumped at the chance to take a look to see if everything inside looks as it should with my kitties.

Elise brought up a needed dental. A simple case of gingivitis knocked Alex out of an almost 3 year remission. Having a dental done and aggressively dosing with insulin for only 8 weeks was all it took to get her OTJ again. It's possible having a dental done *may* be all it takes to send Sammy back to the Falls.
