Good Morning Everyone,

Yesterday's Condo

Yesterday's Recap
AMPS = 384
+2 = 349
+4 = 285
+6 = 244
+8 = 345
+11 = 271
PMPS = 265
+2 = 252
+4 = 130
+5 = 83
+6 = 79
+8 = 93
+10 = 109

Sami had quite a day yesterday. She did drop considerably by PMPS, but really what was that AMPS all about. Even at PMPS I wasn't too hopeful that she would get into the BLUE let alone the GREEN, but Sami surprised me. I was going on the "if +2 is the same as PS" rule and I was not expecting 130 at +4. I had to test her twice to make sure it wasn't a bad strip. And I seriously wasn't expecting 83 at +5. I had actually not planned on getting a +5 and going right to +6, but the adrenaline had kicked in from the 83 and I was wondering exactly where Sami would be taking me. So at +5 when I was still awake I tested her again.

I felt pretty comfortable going back to bed for 2 hours at that point, but I did give her a bit more food than the MiniMeal(MM), just so that I could feel more comfortable about sleeping.

I got up at +8 to check and gave her another MM, even though it wasn't planned. I just wanted to be sure. but now I see it probably wasn't necessary. I had not planned on getting up at +9 either, but I woke up with the Timed feeder rotated. When Sami didn't immediately get up to go eat I thought maybe I should get up with her. She ate a bit of the food, but not much. Since I took it out of the feeder for her and put it in another bowl I decided to pull it up so that her AMPS wouldn't be food influenced.

By 4;00 (+10.5) am Sami was hungry and waking me up every 15-20 minutes. at 4:48 am I almost got up to test her to make sure she wasn't too low, but I know her little antics and decided to wait another 30 minutes. It did get her to scramble downstairs and it took he a little bit to realize I wasn't following so I did get a few extra minutes of sleep. And of course Sami work me up again before the AMPS alarm. I might have to give her a token MM, maybe just a teaspoon, at +10 to get her through to morning. I am already losing enough sleep as it is and to have her constantly waking me before PS just isn't going to work.

I hope everyone has a great day. I am on the lookout for a bounce today, but I am really hoping that it just won't come. This cycle is definitely different that the last few cycles where she hit GREEN. So hopefully we have turned that corner.

Don't you love Julie's crystal ball! :D:D Time to surf it Sami!

I saw your video too, including the kitty cameos.:) Neko would love to play in those shelves! Ask Julie about her fabric stash, I'm pretty sure she has one like I do.;)

Yes, I do love Julie's crystal Ball. LOL! After Sami's +2 from last night I was expecting an uneventful cycle, but apparently Sami didn't get the memo. That is okay, I love seeing these numbers so much better. And LOOK Almost all HEALING NUMBER for the entire cycle. I love it.

Yes, when there is yarn there is cats. I use to store all my yarn in Rubbermaid and Sterilite Bins, like the one I was piling yarn into at the beginning. But I couldn't see all the pretties, and it took me forever to find what I was looking for. I have seen other stashes where they just have little cubbies, no doors, but that just wouldn't work for me and the cats. The glass allows me to still view all my yarn but keep it protected from little paws. But as you could see when they have the opportunity to investigate the stash they take it.

Nice day indeed, and what a great start for today! Fingers crossed that the bounce stays away and you get a lovely surf for Miss Sami!!

Hoping that Miss Sami doesn't bounce, and surfs nicely for you today, and every day. Keep up the excellent work. You're both doing a wonderful job! :D

Thanks, so far so good. I will test again in another 30 minutes or so. I wanted to test at +7 but she was sleeping so nicely and she has been surfing since +2 so I didn't want to bother her. Hopefully she will wake up by then otherwise I will still have to disturb her sleep, because I don't want to let her go too long without a test and not know where she might decide to take me.

Glad to see Sami doing so good. Keep on surfing. I always hate to wake Toby for a test too.
They seem so peaceful and then you have to wake them up.
Take Care, Peg and Toby

Sami surfed really nicely today and now I am probably going to go and screw it up. I just scheduled a vet appointment for this evening. Sami has been licking a lot the past couple of days and today I thought I saw some sort of discharge on her hindquarters. My husband thinks I should give it a few days, but if it is the start of an infection it would totally derail all the progress we have made. I just hope the trip to the vet doesn't derail it.

Wish us luck! We actually have to see a different doctor, which I am not happy about, because Sami's doctor is on vacation this week. I guess any doctor is better than waiting a week to take her in.

Sending vetty vines

I be right over wen you get back Sami, I bring de special Aussie gum leaf likor for you to bath in, it get the vetty stench right off you, no worries there - Vyktor

Good luck at the vets. Tina, Hope it's just a false alarm. Sending prayers and vines for a good outcome. Take Care, Peg and Toby

heehee i confess that i'm very happy that she kept you up all night with green numbers, er, i mean, that she cleared the bounce last night! once in a while my crystal ball works! And what a SUPER day for her too! Great job shooting the 127 this morning - doing that is what's giving you these nice flat long green cycles. WOOT!

I hope tonight is uneventful and there's nothing going on with the little girls hind end! Let us know what the vet says.

hehe i *might* have a little fabric stash . . . but I'll blame some of it on my mom. She won - you know the bumper sticker "the one who dies with the most fabric wins!" well, my mom won. :p she would love that i tell people that. :woot: i gave away a ton of her fabric that i knew i wouldn't use, but kept another huge amount. doesn't bother me one bit. uh, and i might have more fabric than you have yarn, at least the part you were organizing.:smuggrin:

I hope tonight is uneventful and there's nothing going on with the little girls hind end! Let us know what the vet says.

WELL, tonight is definitely not without EVENTS! OMG! Can it get any crazier. Let me start with the SUGAR Craziness and go from there.

Okay, so I set the vet appointment for 6:30 (+1) and figure we would have time to have insulin get the first and second MiniMeal combined, and then off to the Vet we would go. We should be home by +2 or there soon after and there shouldn't be a problem. RIGHT! You know the stress of the vet increasing the sugar and all. WRONG!

While we were waiting for the doctor, who didn't come in until 30 minutes after our appointment time and only after I asked how long it was going to take, and just before I became FREAK OUT CAT MOM calling for the doctor, I tested Sami. And, at +1.5 Sami was at 68, okay no biggie, as long as we get out of here pretty quickly we should be fine to get some food before +2. Sure I thought about bringing the test kit with me but didn't think about bringing any snacks. You see where this is going, BUT WAIT FOR IT!

So the doctor came in and started examining Sami. During the exam the doctor gave me a funny look. She said "you said Sami is a girl, but that is clearly a PENIS!" WHAT! Eight years ago when we took Sami in to our home and had her/HIM checked out at the current vet, they told us that she was a girl. The funny part is that when I first met Sami and HE came right up to me and sat on my lap in our back yard the name SAM immediately came to mind. But then the vet told us she was a girl and she become Sami.

Anyway, that was a real shocker!

After I told the doctor about seeing what looked like some sort of discharge on the hindquarters the she suggested Expressing the Anal Glands, I had never heard of this before but okay, and also a urinalysis just to double check that. So they took Sami back to express the anal glands and boy I could tell that HE wasn't happy about that. They had to put his head in a cup because he was so upset. So I am thinking great there goes the sugar sky high. The doctor came back and said that the anal glands were full of goo, but no infection so that was good. And they sent us home, no urinalysis needed.

I figured we had plenty of time to get home and check sugar, seeing how traumatic the expressing of that anal glands was.

WELL, we got home and I has planned on immediately testing Sami, but HE was very insistent on getting something to eat, So I did go ahead and give HIM something really quick so I could get a test. When I tried to get a test he was very fidgety and I was barely able to get the blood on the strip. WAIT 7 second for the NUMBER .... 43, so much for the vet being stressful.

Since it was still so early in the cycle I did go ahead and give ½ tsp of medium carb, and I just tested 15 minutes after the first and after MC and HE was 55. I just gave some additional LC and will test again at +3.

Okay, so now here is the question. I know Sami is considered a LONG TERM DIABETIC, and has to go below 40 to earn a reduction, or go below 50 three times on the dose, but considering the dramatic change in just the past day with the MiniMeals and what we went through tonight, do you think HE earned a decrease to 2.0 units.

BTW, my husband thinks it was more traumatic for Sami to find out She was a HE than it was to have the anal glands expressed. MEN! LOL!

That is funny that she is a he. Very impressive numbers. You know I have no advice dosage wise but cute story.

that is a hysterical story! nothing like finding boy parts on your girl! LOL

i'm looking at her/his profile and can't tell how long s/he was on insulin. I see OTJ after 3 weeks and then back on insulin - has the total been more than a year?

by the way, not all cats experience vet stress. punkin never did. one time i was testing for low numbers while at the vet's in the waiting room with a slobbery giant dog barking and getting weighed maybe 5 feet away - his BGs never budged. just depends on the cat.

@julie & punkin (ga)

Sami was on Vetsilin for three weeks in Sept 2009, then on Lantus for 3 months from mid-late November 2009 to mid February 2010, and now on Lantus since January 20th. We actually gave her/HIM a few doses at the beginning of January and then backed off because the Vet thought she/HE was going too low. So technically HE has only been on again since January 20th, 2015.

Yeah, I was really nervous when two pitbulls were jumping around barking right in front of us, but apparently it didn't phase HIM!

WOAH....I'm sure THAT is not the news you expected from the vet! To say that's a shocker is putting it mildly!! So my question is...did his regular vet thing Sami was a girl all these years???? If so....maybe it's a good thing you saw another vet - and maybe it's time to switch! Yikes!! (Time to update Sami's profile!!!)

Trix is one who always dropped under vetty stress....ECID!!!

Even though it's his 3rd time on insulin, I probably would take the reduction tonight. I imagine you could get conflicting opinions on this, though, since he's been diabetic since 2009 . . . so it's really up to you.

by the way, hehehehehe the profile says she's a spayed female. LOL. you're going to have some updating to do at some point! :woot:

I cannot stop laughing! That is just so hysterical! It's a little scary, though, that in all the time you've had shim, no other vet has ever noticed the boy parts.

China responds to stress by having her numbers go down too. It's not the "norm", but nobody ever told China she had to be normal....LOL

How funny on the sex change!! At least Sami is a unisex name!

His/her profile says she's/he's a spayed female...Have to wonder about the vet that did that procedure!!

Yep, just updated the profile and added the different times HE was on insulin and the type.

I don't think the current vet ever looked to be honest, there have never been any problems down in that area so there was never a need. They told me that when a pet own comes in and say their cat is a girl or a boy they go with it, and don't necessarily verify the details. I guess maybe they should start verifying. Apparently it isn't difficult to confirm, so why not.

Here is another thing to keep in mind. The first two times Sami started insulin HE was on a DRY only diet. And even the first TWO months on Lantus he was DRY only, it wasn't until I found this board in mid January 2010 that I switched him over to an all wet diet and within a month he was OTJ.

That is so funny- I can understand you're not knowing for sure because most kitties won't allow you to check out their private parts. We thought Tiger was a boy at first as well- but for your vet NOT to know "she" was a "he" --wow!!:smuggrin:

I know, I guess since there were never any troubles down there they never thought to look! And how I am I to know the difference.

Yeah, the funny thing is when Sami first came to us the name Sam immediately popped into my head and that was what we were going to call him, until the vet told us she was a girl, and she become Sami. So my initial instincts were correct.

No the total time on insulin has only been 4-5 months over a 5+ year period. and the first 3 months was DRY food only.

Okay, I am going to take the reduction tomorrow morning. Because total time on insulin has been less than a year would HE still be considered LONG TERM? See post above.

Also when I implemented the MiniMeals back in 2010, Sami went from 1.25 units to .25 units in a matter of a less than a week. Then we tried to hold the .25, and .1 dose as long as possible to give the pancreas time to heal.

It's surprising to me that no vet ever checked out his bottom. Mine always looks it over. Poor Sami is going to need all new toys and beds. All the pink girlie one's will have to go. I guess you'd better start knitting!!! Wendy from Wendy Knits has a great cat bed pattern. You might not have the right yarn in your stash, though. Not to worry, I can direct you to several online yarn stores. :) You, Julie, Wendy, and I, along with all other knitters and quilters on this board, should meet up in Center Harbor, NH to go to Keepsake Quilting and Patternworks (yarn store) ROAD TRIP!!!

we LOVE a road trip!!!

Well . . . once a cat has been diagnosed with diabetes, if they become diet-controlled they are still considered diabetic. I think technically he has been diabetic since 2009, so 6 years. That's why I said others might have other advice. I don't think this is clear-cut. I suspect there is a difference between a cat that has constantly been on insulin for 6 years and a cat that's been diet-controlled all except for a couple of months of that time.

Looks like Sammy is really liking the green. :D So, what was your reaction when the vet told you?

Vetty stress really is ECID. Neko doesn't spike her BG at the vet, but one stressful vet visit spiked her blood pressure to 210 (from 128 at a quiet vet room with Feliway). The civie on the other hand, once had a BG of 215 at a vet visit - not his normal vet. They told me he might be diabetic. Nope, 53 the next day at home.

Have you double checked the other cat? ;)

OMG. This is too funny. Reminds me of when I was a kid. We got two kittens, one for me and one for my sister. My "male" cat was Puff and my sisters "female" cat was Muff. Puff was very friendly. They were outdoor cats. Puff went missing and found me a few weeks later on the playground of my elementary school several blocks from our house. A few weeks later Muff had kittens. A few weeks later Puff had kittens. Yep, he was a she!! My dear wonderful dad found homes for all 11 by insisting everyone take two. I guess this happens more often than we think.
