FAQ

How does the Smart Cat Box™ work?

The Smart Cat Box ™ consists of a top box that holds litter and a tray that funnels urine into a removable urine reservoir. The top box holds the safflower litter and has slits in the bottom. The safflower litter will not aborb urine; instead, the urine passes through the slits in the top box and is collected in the urine reservoir. The non-leaking urine reservoir is easily removed for transport to a toilet or sink to be emptied and rinsed. Feces are retained in the top litter container and will need to be scooped.

Has the Smart Cat Box™ been tested by a veterinarian?

Before being released to the public, the inventor of the Smart Cat Box ™ had an Oregon veterinarian test the box in his practice. This vet, Dr. Steven Brown of Animal Medical Care in Newport, OR, says: "I've used a prototype in my practice over the last year and found it very helpful. It is very safe, very natural... I've been very happy with my experience with the SMART CAT BOX. It has been very helpful in our practice."

What are the dimensions of the Smart Cat Box™?

The SMART CAT BOX is approximately the same size as a conventional cat litter box: 20"L x 15 1/2"W x 7 1/2"H. The depth of the litter tray is 5".

What is the capacity of the urine reservoir?

The urine reservoir holds approximately 24 ounces. If you cannot empty the reservoir everyday or if your cat produces very large volumes of urine, consider placing the litter system in a tray (like a boot tray) or in a shower stall to prevent messy spills.

My cat has some physical disabilities. Will she be able to get in the box?

The height from the floor to the top of the box is 7 1/2". Adding the sidewall extensions does not increase the height of the entry. If your cat has problems with this height, you can construct a ramp out of cardboard or other materials to ease the transition into the box. The box itself is 5" deep.

How do the sidewall extensions work?

The four walls snap into the included connecting corners. One wall has an opening as the entry. This entry will fit on the short width of the box. Simply place the sidewalls inside the litter tray and add the litter! The sidewalls will add approximately 5" to the height of the litter box, to make the box approximately 12-1/2" high.

Will litter other than the SeedTec™ work in my Smart Cat Box™?

You can use regular bird-seed type safflower seed (not sunflower seed!) in your box but there are two characteristics you will notice. The regular safflower seeds are smaller and may fall through the openings in the litter tray and regular seeds contain a much smaller oil content so they will not last as long as our special SeedTec litters. Clumping litters will not work in the Smart Cat Box™.

Is the litter flushable?

Do not dispose of large amounts of litter down your toilet as clogging may result. If small amounts of litter cling to solid wastes you scoop, these are usually flushable along with the feces.

How are odors controlled?

As in every litter box, optimal odor control is assisted by scooping feces on a daily basis. The Smart Cat Box urine reservoir should be emptied regularly also and should be rinsed each time it is emptied. After some time, dried urine may accumulate around the drain hole to the reservoir or on the box slats. If this happens and you note an odor, you should wash the box. A few people find that the safflower seed litter may need to be refreshed after time. You can rinse the safflower seed in plain water, apply a natural freshener, or use a dilute bleach spray. Be aware that cats may have allergies to non-water sprays and rinses. After treating the litter, make sure to let it dry thoroughly. If your litter does not refresh, it is time for a new bag of litter.

How much litter do I use? How long will a bag of litter last?

One 5 lb. bag of litter fills the box to a perfect level. The number of cats using the Smart Cat Box™ and the amount of urine produced by your cat will affect the length of time the litter will last. On average, customers report needing a new bag of replacement litter every 3 to 4 months.
