Back to the start of another work week... Mego was pretty excited this morning for his breffis. I left food out overnight, but he didn't eat much of it (too watered down?). I'm going to try some different meal times and see if I can get him to eat a little more. He hasn't ever really been a big eater, but after doing some more research on feline nutrition, I'm worried he hasn't been getting enough calories. Always more to learn...

I hope you all have a great Monday... and don't forget to pull some good ol' fashioned practical jokes on people today.

Re: 4/1 Mego AMBG 94

Good morning, That's a pretty green start to the day. Hope Mego surfs along nicely. Have a great day

Re: 4/1 Mego AMBG 94

Nice start to the day for Mego. Good luck with trying to get him to eat more.

Morning Katie,
Beautiful start today for Mego. Surf safely sweetie while your bean is off working away.

I don't think we have had a chance to stop by before. Mego is looking awesome.   Have a great day!!

Re: 4/1 Mego AMBG 94

mego's looking great!

i don't see why we shouldn't be calling this an official OTJ Trial. his numbers are nice and strong. here's the instructions:

  • Test at your normal AMPS and PMPS times. Feed multiple small meals throughout the day as much as possible (small meals are less likely to overwhelm a newly functioning pancreas).
  • If your cat is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time, just feed small meals and go about your day. If he is blue, feed a small meal and test again after about 3 hours. If his number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then his pancreas is working! After 2 weeks, if everything is looking good, we have a party!

Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens, we just give him the support he needs. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Re: 4/1 Mego OTJ Trial Day 3 AMBG 94

Just got home from a very long day at work. :YMSIGH: I faxed Mego's SS to the vet this morning and told her I'd call after I was done with work. I told her I had done things a little differently than what we had last discussed over the phone and that he had been off the insulin since the evening of March 29th with numbers below 100. I think she was quite surprised and told me to continue to monitor his BGs for a while and let her know how things were going. I did tell her about the Lantus pen and told her I recommend it as opposed to the repackaged vial they gave me. I also thought it was important to tell her how much I appreciated her willingness to work with me and the home testing as I've heard many vets don't agree with this practice. Hopefully, she'll recommend it to her next diabetic patient's owner.

And it looks like we are going to start an official OTJ trial - good news is that we've got a few days under the belt already. We'll see what his PMBG is here very shortly. Thanks for all of the well wishes everyone.

Oooh this is exciting!
I love seeing the words "OTJ Trial" in subject lines.
Good luck! And good job!

I'm not going to lie... I'm excited by his numbers, but I'm also realistically thinking in the back of my mind - is it really possible to heal a pancreas in 3 weeks? I guess only time will tell.
A few questions:
-what is the official BG range Mego needs to be in over the next 2 weeks of the trial period? My vet's normal blood work range is 71-159mg/dL.
-I would assume that ketone testing is still very important especially since he's off the insulin?
-If he gets into the blue, is fed his meal, and his BG doesn't come down after +3, at what point do we restart the insulin? Do we wait for a repeat of this formula to make sure it wasn't just a one-time occurrence?

Do the questions ever end? ohmygod_smile

Yep, we've seen it before.

We look for numbers to be under 120 overall. Usually they will be mostly green, with some forays over 100 being ok. If the numbers start to creep up over 100 very often, then we start watching more closely.

-I would assume that ketone testing is still very important especially since he's off the insulin?
Getting a ketone test when you can is never a bad idea, but you don't need to go too far out of your way to do it.

-If he gets into the blue, is fed his meal, and his BG doesn't come down after +3, at what point do we restart the insulin? Do we wait for a repeat of this formula to make sure it wasn't just a one-time occurrence?
We'll just start watching more closely, looking for trends, maybe trying some food experiments to see if we can pull the numbers back down into range. A higher number or two is not a big concern, a higher trend might be.

Do the questions ever end? ohmygod_smile
Probably not. I've been here 5 years and I'm still learning things all the time.

Re: 4/1 Mego OTJ Trial Day 3 PMBG 97 + 3.5 100 First Blue

So I know I really didn't have to test Mego until his AMPS tomorrow, but as many of you may know - I'm a serial tester. It comes with the territory of having a Type A personality! And for those of you who know what I'm talking about... you get me! Mego has his first blue tonight and I wondered if it would happen tonight considering he was at his highest PMBG since being OTJ thus far. He is still within the range and he's been eating and snacking over the last 3 hours. We'll see what he's going to throw at me tomorrow morning - as always, Mego has taught me to be ready for anything!

Paws crossed! I wouldn't worry about that 100. Sienne will tell you it's basically the same as the 97, with meter variation. Mego is doing great!

Re: 4/1 Mego OTJ Trial Day 3 PMBG 97 + 3.5 100 First Blue

Hi Katie, Kismet was only on insulin for 2 weeks before we started our trial, and he was OTJ for close to 6 months! Sometimes, changing the diet is all it takes. Good luck with the trial!

Re: 4/1 Mego OTJ Trial Day 3 PMBG 97 + 3.5 100 First Blue

Way to go Mego - you must be an overachiever like your Type A bean. Perhaps the 100 is just your April Fool's joke!   (just kidding ma!)

We are cheering for you :RAHCAT

Mego and I thank you all for your support. You have all been so wonderful to us!

Re: 4/1 Mego OTJ Trial Day 3 PMBG 97 + 3.5 100 First Blue

Congrats to you and Mego on the OTJ trial. I hope all goes well!! You have done such a great job taking care of Mego over the past few weeks. Its great to see his numbers in the normal range - and its great to see him doing an OTJ trial so soon!

Re: 4/1 Mego OTJ Trial Day 3 PMBG 97 + 3.5 100 First Blue

Oooh, I LOVE trials!! Go Mego!! We'll call that last number emerald - close enough. :-D

Katie - Part of the trial process is for the bean too. Over time, we'll expect you'll learn to live with a few less tests.

Re: 4/1 Mego OTJ Trial Day 3 PMBG 97 + 3.5 100 First Blue

FEWER TESTS... WHAT DO YOU MEAN FEWER TESTS!!! What am I going to do with all of that free time?!? Oh yeah, now it's coming back to me - continuous sleep cycles and everyday life again. Well, that'll be a change! Oh, and emerald... I LIKE IT! :-D
