I've come to the conlusion that Spot's bg's are much better when I can control his eating times. Yesterday I put him on an every three hour eating schedule. I was at work for the morning schedule, but mom was home and was very deligent about giving him his mini meal at the appropriate time...going as far as waking him up and carrying him to his dish. We got a nice green pmbg. During the night his timed feeder is set for the appropriate times, however, I can't be sure he is eating then. The dishes are empty when I get up, but there are two other kitties in the house besides him, so if he doesn't get to it, they will. So, this morning we got a 109 ambg. Going to keep an eye on this for a while to see if this is the case. If so, I don't know what to do w/him besides make him an office kittie, lol

Spot did not seem quite as "starving" yesterday, as you have heard, he had to be carried to his food dish. He didn't come RUNNING for his mini meals and didn't meow so urgently for his nini snack. I wonder if those every 3 hr. mini meals have something to do w/this. His LB action is the same and all P's were in order this morning.

We're watching the trial, Deb, let's hope he can read this condo and bring this range down a little. If he can't, we can give him some help, but let's wait another day or two.

I have a question in regards to this, Libby. What exactly do you mean by give him some help? Does this mean end the OTJ trial and start up insulin again, or when he gets to a certain number I give him a token dose and the OTJ trial continues? If I have to discontinue the trial to help Mr. P and Mr. L, then so be it. I'm just not sure exactly when this time would be. So far, he's getting lots of blues, but nothing over 150 (anti-jinx). I'm not to crazy about this of course because I would like to see him in greens most of the time. However, the lower blues don't really give me cause for alarm....or should it??

Well, I'm at TBP now, so I will drop in occasionally to visit some condos. Hope everyone has a great munnerday....Day one of the week down, four more to go!!

I think Quincy and Spot are definitely communicating somehow! Quincy's AMBG was 108.

Hope this week is a good one for both!

Re: 3/15 Deb's Spot AMBG 109 Gum day 9

Morning Deb. When my Raja was on trial...her first OTJ trial...her numbers were a little higher than everyone liked to see. so, on the 13th day it was suggested that I put her back on .1u again for a little while. (turned out to be 13 days more or so...)

I began setting my alarm for +8 (4am) and giving her a snack that allowed for 4 hours between her snack and AMBG.
She began to bring her numbers down with the snacks and I am glad to see that you are doing that with the snacks for Spot.
At first I tried feeding her 3 hours before but realized that the 4 hours gave much lower numbers for Raja. ECID.

I gave her small meals every 4 hours during the day and night. When I actually saw her eating at 4am I would take the food up so she had nothing between then and her morning meal AMBG.
She passed her second OTJ trial with flying colors...

Not sure if that was what Libby meant by giving Spot a little help....but the way I looked at it back then, if her numbers were a little too high for stopping the insulin altogether, then I wanted to get her back on it for as long as it took for her to really be completely ready...and to not have her little pancreas struggling. I saw others with much lower BGs during their trials and realized that she was a little higher than they were. I was giving my two kitties the shots so they could heal and well, when I realized that Raja needed a little more time on it, I was happy to go back to shooting her.

It was a bit of a let down at first but actually, during those 13 days of her first trial, I compared her numbers to the others and started to be concerned for her sake. I didn't want her off insulin prematurely if she needed a little more healing time.... Meanwhile, the second time around, there was a big difference and I was more confident that she was ready. It's all about the kitty, isn't it? So, I would suggest to you that Spot is doing so well...he is almost ready and if he needs a little more time on that smidgen of insulin, then it's all about what's good for HIM...the BEST for Spot.

I know that Libby and Jill are watching and they will decide what they think about his numbers and what the best plan is for Spot...keep on keeping on and wait for them to give you an idea about their thoughts...

Raja is rooting for him and knows just how he feels! She is looking forward to a lot of dances at the party too....so tell him to polish his dancing shoes and get ready for the big night...
And I know just how YOU feel....that is so good that you are rearranging the feeding times too and that is helping...you both have come a long way and all these beautiful numbers show that his pancreas is healing....this is all good!
It is SUCCESS....no matter when the official OTJ day it, it still spells SUCCESS in my book? How 'bout yours?
YAY SPOT!!!!!

Re: 3/15 Deb's Spot AMBG 109/ AMBG +9~ 91 Gum day 9

Ate his +6 meal half hour late...Mom said when she got home the feeder was opened, but no food eaten. She got Spot and put him in front of the dish and he ate.
Tested when I got home from work and to my surprise he was green!

Pat...thanks for your post. I wholeheartedly agree with the fact that if his pancreas needs the extra insulin, that is what I will do. It is more important for it to heal then for us to be on an OTJ trial.

I see that you tried every three then every four hours. Right now, it looks like the three hours are working just fine. That could change, tho, he is a cat! I was just curious about what Libby was saying. He was climbing up there...but looks like now he is going back down. Didn't know if there was a certain number in which the trial should be aborted and insulin start back up OR if a drop of insulin to jump start things was what she was talking about. Right now, I'm just going to watch his progress and then I guess we'll make the call if and when needed. I am happy with the progress he has made and I will be happy if he doesn't quite make it through this trial. He has made it this far and that really and truly is a success story in itself.

Re: 3/15 Deb's Spot AMBG 109/ AMBG +9~ 91 Gum day 9

I don't think there is a set number that determines whether to abort or not, I think it's more an overall what are the numbers doing and where are they sitting. And I think it's also just that feeling of "you know something just isn't quite right with this and well, maybe a little more time is needed."

My concern is that when he is OTJ for a couple months you want him sitting easily in the greens and if he is struggling to get there now, will he be able to maintain it long term.

I know you know, and for now, you're waiting for some kind of sign or for someone to sign - trial over, start again or something.

Like Pat said, when Maui shot up (after the dry food incident) and was struggling to bring herself down and keep it down, I had the feeling that this wasn't working and I believe it was Jojo who came out and said abort and start over. It only took a few more days to restart, but it was well worth it.

Oh and I promised Maui earrings! Instead, I pierced myself and added a hole in her honor! I can add another for Spotty......if .......

Re: 3/15 Deb's Spot AMBG 109/ AMBG +9~ 91 Gum day 9

Ok, thanks Hillary. I think what I am going to do is watch what happens in the next few days. If I don't see much improvement...ie...more greens, then perhaps it is time to let him hit the juice again and then try the gum some other time. I really was not working towards getting him OTJ, just healthy and happy. OTJ is a bonus.

Thanks everyone for your input!!!

Oh, fyi...I asked Spot what he would want for an OTJ gift and he said the wanted me to get rid of his Bitc*** civvie sister, Ali....Told him I couldn't do that, so who knows what else he'll come up with.

Re: 3/15 Deb's Spot AMBG 109/ AMBG +9~ 91 Gum day 9

Happy to see the mini meals are helping Spot and happy to see some green too! I hope he continues to get even more greens.

I'm glad Pat explained how Raja's two OTJ trials went and how well it eventually worked out. It is tough on the momma bean, but that is what the trial is for... a test to see how kitty's pancreas does without juice. Sometimes the kitty will have to start up again with a drop of insulin... I can't speak for Libby, but I believe the 'help' she meant was to resume that drop of insulin for a short time. Not just once. I haven't heard of just one drop doing it... but there is always a first time, who knows? You want Spot to stay in the normal range for the majority of the time (on the OTJ trial) for the pancreas to be considered ready to be called OTJ.

You are a little more than halfway through and Spot's numbers haven't been too high. Maybe 'high normal'? (I think Raja had numbers above 130 a little too often, on her first trial.) I still have faith in the Spotty boy. Quite often the numbers trend downward as the trial proceeds. Let's hope for more of that, k? If not, no biggie, start again in a week or so.

 Lydia... a pony? Hillary a pierced earring? Don't tell BigMac, I didn't get him a present. lol!

Re: 3/15 Deb's Spot AMBG 109/ AMBG +9~ 91 Gum day 9

I am sure that the next few days will determine what will happen. His numbers don't look as high as Raja's were...and with her, we went through until the 13th day before aborting...
You are both doing great!!! Spot was helpful and SOP much fun at the decorating party....BTW, they have been know to have clean-up parties after the big party...sigh....these kitties are TOO much!!!

Re: 3/15 Deb's Spot AMBG 109/ PMBG ~ 98 Gum day 9

I think Spot may be hearing everyone talking about him and about possibly aborting his gum trial and he is trying to step up to the plate....he got another green!! I am going to test him once more, before bedtime tonight, just to see where we are.

Thanks for visiting us and talking just loud enough for Spot to hear!

Re: 3/15 Deb's Spot AMBG 109/ AMBG +9~ 91 Gum day 9

Tell Spot that is not a nice present and he must think of something else. Offer him a very cool earring and see how he reacts. Maui really wanted to wear hers, but then decided she didn't want to deal with the daily cleaning and turning of it. So, she told me to get it instead!

CD - ha ha - poor Big Mac, lost out on the perfect opportunity to guilt momma bean.

Re: 3/15 Deb's Spot AMBG 109/ AMBG +9~ 91 Gum day 9

Deb, Spot has come miraculously far from how he was when you first came on!!
Yes I do remember the days before lev when Spot was in the red numbers, all the problems, that led you to this!!
So, looking at all that passed before you, SPOT IS DOING Amazing, and we all know what the outcome will be :thumbup dancing_cat :thumbup
So whether it's this week, next week, or whenever, you have done an unbelieveable job with your Spot!!!
Another amazing story from Lantus Land!
I, for one, admire you for all the hard work you are doing for your baby!
So, Spottie, let's see day 10!!--HUGS to both of you!! How about the Batmobile?? Holy Batman Cat man!

What I meant was that if we need to, we would end the OTJ trial and start insulin, for however long we need to. However, I'm much less worried today so let's see where Spot wants to go with this. There's not a specific number, more like watching the trend and seeing if it looks like Spot is able to manage things on his own. It's good to see these better numbers, I think he's getting it now! I don't know when I've ever been so happy to see green, other than my own cat.

Good luch Deb, hope Spot likes those mini meals to help the pancreas kick it. Hugs!!! Happy Gum Day 9
