Today was certainly the best day for far for Diego looking at his BG levels. I added Friskies Chicken paté and Turkey paté to the menu. He's still very lethargic but that could be due to his eternally clogged nose. Both of the cats are now on canned food, although I have a secret cache of kibble for Monty that Diego can't get to.

Will his numbers keep dropping every day now, or has the lantus maybe kicked in 100%? It's maybe too early to predict a trend or to stop worrying about hypos.
Does anyone here take the blood sample from the rear footpad? After 30 minutes of trying the ear, I went with the foot. I seem to remember seeing a link or video from the FDMB site about using the foot as an alternative site.

I REALLY hope we are on the right track to health for Diego. I am expected to do a curve for him on Sunday so the vet can see how he is responding to the insulin.

These are lovely numbers for Diego!

It's really too early to tell much of anything. In addition, I wouldn't be surprised to see him bounce back into higher numbers as the day wears on. It's my best guesstimate that Diego has been in higher numbers for a while prior to his diagnosis. As a result, his body had gotten acclimated to being in those higher ranges. Once the insulin starts doing it's job and numbers come down, the liver and pancreas panic. They don't recognize what normal numbers are. Instead, they've gotten used to those higher numbers as the "new normal." Thus, when numbers do come down, the body overreacts and numbers shoot back up due to the liver and pancreas releasing a stored form of glucose (i.e., glucagon) and counterregulatory hormones. We refer to this as a bounce. It can take several days for the bounce to clear.
