Yesterday: vet visit, constipation.

Good morning! ~O) ~O)
We got a little poo out this morning (w/some straining).

Poor thing was EXHAUSTED last night from her vetty visit. (Haven't old her yet that we're going back today for a urine draw nailbite_smile ).
I set the alarm for a midnight +6 test, and realized that she had not left her rocking chair ~ not even for water  . So I brought some to her and she lapped and lapped.
I also added some more water to her food.
Now just waiting for the feline enema to arrive... nailbite_smile

Re: 1/24 Ripley AMPS 146

Hi Josie, I just read yesterday's condo about the enema. I remember John (PurrFace) a while back gave PurrFace an enema. You might check with him on his thoughts about it. The Vet did Maggie's enemas, but she was really blocked up for five days' worth in the beginning. Would you be more comfy having the Vet do it?

Re: 1/24 Ripley AMPS 146

Hi, Melissa, Thank you!

Hello, Ann, yes I'd be more comfortable w/the enema being done at the vet ~ I'm going to bring this up today when I take Ripples in. (Hate to admit that $ is going to be a factor, and the feline enema kit was only about $3... we'll see what he says today.) I'll also contact John ~ thank you!!

Re: 1/24 Ripley AMPS 146

If the vet does the enema, make sure the Feline Pet-ema is used.

Cats shouldn't have Sodium Phosphate in a Fleet enema, although vets may use those for other animals. If the vet didn't know that I might be concerned.

If you do it at home, post the question over in Health and some of our vet techie types may have some pointers. I couldn't find any YouTube video for it.

Basically you warm the Pet-ema up to body temp with warm (not hot) water and the big trick is getting it all in there. I wasted the first one figuring that out. You don't want to injure the thrashing cat, needless to say they don't like it one bit so you need to remain calm and keep them calm. Once you get the blue liquid administered you hold them belly up for 10 minutes so it doesn't come right out. They will likely want to go immediately, but it needs to work it's way in for best results. After you get that far, keep them in the bathroom with plenty of sheets and towels down and a clean litter box. May take 5 hours or more before you get the main prize, it really is sort of like giving birth.

But that's why I'd rather do it at home. I don't want my cat either in a cage or transported in a carrier during that uncomfortable (stressful) interval before the process is finished.

Re: 1/24 Ripley AMPS 146

Thanks for the advice!

I agree, that the stress at the vet makes home enema sound better for her emotional well-being.

Ripley and I have become even closer (if that's possible!) from the FD treatment; why not bond even more with an enema? ;-)

Maybe I should start practicing that Bill Cosby chant, "push it out, shove it out, waaaaay out!"

Re: 1/24 Ripley AMPS 146

Hi Josie. I sent a reply to your PM. Our vet gave us the enema solution in the syringe so I'm not sure what it was. We gave PF half of it's contents and it took about 5 minutes for the first "deposits" to come and he was all done in about half an hour. It did nauseated him and he did throw up. The scary part was when he began drooling to the point that it looked like water running out of his mouth. I called the vet and got the old "oh, I forgot to tell you" response. The drooling was an expected side effect. It lasted about 5 minutes or so. He stopped making "hurry" runs to the litter box after about 30-45 minutes.

Let us know how you do.

Re: 1/24 Ripley AMPS 146

Everyone who has ever had a constipated cat should keep some Pet-emas on hand. I don't believe they ever expire.

The first time I had to do it was over a holiday, and it's a problem easier cleared up sooner rather than later.

It will almost surely always happen again sometime. I'm definitely no longer cautious with the Miralax.

Re: 1/24 Ripley AMPS 146

you can try to watch a few videos online about enemas..... see the good and bad and talk to your vet about it all.
just search Google

youtube how to give a cat an enema at home

1/24 Ripley AMPS 146, partial b/w results

Thank you for all of the enema help!

My vet just called with a couple of bloodwrk results: (I'll be getting a full copy of results this afternoon)
BUN 64, Creat. 4.3
(In Nov. BUN was 52, Creat. was 2.9)

He recommends changing her food to prescription to help out her kidneys.
Since her glucose is under control, he said that low-carb isn't as necessary as hi-protein. This makes me nervous, but maybe it would be better?

I appreciate any thoughts!
Thank you,
Josie

Morning guys no food advice from me, LOL on bonding over the enema. Poor baby having to go through that. Good luck at the vets. Hope you have a good day and sending some poo vines!!!

Re: 1/24 Ripley AMPS 146, partial b/w results

When Kibby was sick recently, he had an enema at the vet, and pooped everywhere almost immediately. I sure don't envy you - I don't think that's something I'd like to try myself. Not sure on the fuds advice, except that you can usually find something better than the prescription foods for less money. Lots of folks on here with kidney issue kitties, tho, so I'm sure you'll get some great advice.

1/24 Ripley AMPS 146, partial b/w results

Hi Anne, Michelle, and Sienne! Thank you for checking in!

I've been feeding Ripley Wellness Turkey (and some Wellness Chicken), both have appropriate levels of carb/phos. ~ I think I'll show my vet a copy of the food chart. According to him, there is no better food than prescription  . I may print out some info from Tanya's site as well. He is mostly concerned about the protein levels in food.

If there's a struggle, I may find a new vet. (I haven't been thrilled with him, but he's been 'hands off' with my FD treatment which has benefited me and my kitty tremendously, and has possibly saved her life.)

Good evening!

Today:
AMPS 146
+8.5 118
{vet visit: urine test}
PMPS 193
+3 185

I updated Ripley's blood work results (will get urine results tomorrow).
I'm bummed that her kidney condition is getting worse. I thought I was doing everything right, or at least well.
I'm a little surprised ~ and sad.

I wasn't able to fully discuss her results with the vet, as our conversation was cut short by an emergency. He doesn't think that there's any other alternative for treating at this time other than prescript. food; I asked about adding binders to the Wellness Turkey, and he said that the prescript food is best & will meet all of her current needs.

I've been reading a lot tonight and collection info, and honestly I'm very overwhelmed. I'm going to take a break, and hopefully have fresh eyes tomorrow to re-evaluate her food & see what changes I can/should make.

Josie

I'm sorry but try not to despair. There are things that can be done. I'm about to zonk out so I want to be sure I'm articulate when I give you some info. So ill post tomorrow. Hugs!
