Hi LL-
Just wanted to give an update on our furry happy kitty. Can hardly believe it has been 30 days since he last received insulin! Wow. Wonderfully amazing!!

I finally called his vet today. Brief recap: Fur Ball was dx with FD on 9/5/12 and he went back to the vet on 9/11/12 for a BG test as she did not advice us to home test. She asked us to schedule a follow up appointment in 2 weeks from this test. Well. Needless to say, after we found this board I just focused on your wise counsel and the rest is history--our boy went OTJ. He has not been back to the vet since.

So, I had a pretty indepth phone conversation with our vet about all the research I did. Informed her of this web site as well as catinfo.org. Told her that Fur Ball had completed his transition to Raw food (pretty quickly) and we believe that played a significant factor in his remission. I told her that even if she believes most of her clients will not test, it is her responsibility to recommend it. She was shocked that we got our meter for $15 at Walmart as she had last priced them close to $100. She mentioned a local vet that supports wet/raw diets but then laughed at the idea of dry food being 'kitty crack.' She also 'thought' she had told us that Lantus was based on the nadir, needed to be dosed every 12 hrs. She was unaware of the 'depot effect.' I recommended she develop a 'newby' handout she could give to newly dx'd beans so if she misses telling information about Lantus, FD etc, we would have something to refer back to from the vet. Overall, she was receptive to take down the websites and forward it along to her other clients. But, I didn't believe she really bought into the importance of testing or getting cats off dry. She was also 'surprised' we had not been back to the vet or called her. Once I found FDMB I trusted you guys more than her and just didn't take the time to call her. She did say she was going to use Fur Ball as a 'poster child' for remission.

While she was so amazing when we lost Simon, DH and I have an interview with another vet scheduled for next Monday. On their website they had a link for feline diabetes so they at least seemed a bit more informed. They are doing a 1 hr consult for free which we thought was pretty amazing. We'll know more next week as we look to find a vet that will support and encourage our decisions we have made with FB.

Thanks to everyone who has been there for us in this journey. Words cannot express how much you have meant to us! :YMHUG:

Enjoying life at the 'falls'
Karen and Fur Ball

Howdy,
I got the same kind of reaction from my vet. I told you this or that but she didn't. I learned it here.
And they still sell the science diet crap. I guess it will take more than one cat owner to convince them this is The Way.
I also told my vet to feel free to give out my name that I would offer help, I know she can't tell me who the FD cats are.
I guess I'll have to put flyers around town.
But she was excited for us and amazed at our progress without her and she also said she never saw anyone work so hard for their pets
progress.

Wow Karen! That's a really interesting summary of your call with her. I'm glad she listened but, I, too, find that even good vets tune it out generally. I think you did your very best to educate her. Gosh...who couldn't look at FurBalls SS and see how amazing the results are....ESP removing dry food.

Let us know how the new vet interview goes. :-D :-D :-D

It's great to her FB is doing so awesome. And a month already!!

That's great new! Furball doing nicely & keeping his bg at bay. So happy to hear that you are passing the Furball experience on the OTJ road to your vet. Yes, this info need to be passed to other DM pets owner but usually I found vet not that willing to do so.
My vet's charging over $30US for each bg test at his clinic, no wonder he's not supportive for home testing :?
Nice to hear from you Karen, enjoy the poky/insulin free days with Furball!
