Re: 10/17 Shadow AMPS 104 +2~79 on way to vet

GOOD LUCK!

I hate the pre-carrier anxiety when you know and they don't.

Do good Shadow - we are sending lots of good vetty vines!

Re: 10/17 Shadow AMPS 104 +2~79 on way to vet

Hi guys .. pretty greens at +2! I hope the vetty visit goes well for you guys .. somehow, I think they always know .. even when they don't show it .. have a great day!

Re: 10/17 Shadow AMPS 104 +2~79 on way to vet

In answer to the question on your spreadsheet, unless there is something very odd today, you would be starting a trial tomorrow.

Re: 10/17 Shadow AMPS 104 +2~79 on way to vet

Good Luck Shadow and play nice with the vet.

I don't know what a trial is yet (being new to FD) but it seem like it's something to be excited about. I will be praying that it happens for you and Shadow. :-D

Re: 10/17 Shadow AMPS 104 +2~79 on way to vet

What a nice start of the day! Too bad it has to be ruined w/ a vetty visit! Sending good vetty vines Tess says she will be over later w/ KTSS>.

ETA: Oh I missed the news of the trial! :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

Re: 10/17 Shadow AMPS 104 +2~79 on way to vet

A trial startring tomorrow??? WONDERFUL NEWS !!!! Tucker will be watching with paws crossed ! :RAHCAT

Re: 10/17 Shadow AMPS 104 +2~79 on way to vet

We are back. Had to take Luna (drooler) after Shadow's trip so it took longer.

SO??? How long til I see a rise from stress? She's been home for over half an hour. I took the in the door test at 4.25 which was 88
and waited 30 minutes and it was 87 @4.75.
I did not test at the vets when it was all happening. She lost at least 1/4 lb of hair as usual and expressed her own glands in fear.
They did the blood draw from her rear right leg with me holding her. She was great and didn't move.
Got all her nails trimmed, no fuss there either.
Got her butt trimmed, but she misunderstood me an shaved around the hole and I was actually wanting some of the long hair cut.
Oh well. nicked her and she didn't like that or being touched there. ( oversensitive from surgery there)
Should have results tomorrow on the blood. senior panel with thyroid check and the potassium is already in that test.
Her last potassium check < from diagnosis was 4.0.

Didn't feel any lipoma type lumps in her rib cage area, just the lumpy scar tissue.
Everything looked good.
Vet was really surprised by her getting 1 drop... thought I meant 1 unit.
No... there are 10 drops in 1 unit for my particular syringe. She's getting 1/10 of a unit....
She was amazed.
Also told her we were supposed to start trial tomorrow depending on how today went.
There are other diabetic cats here in town so I will pester them to offer my name to see if I can help those folks to find our website.
And offer pet sitting for them.
I looked into getting bonded but it's super expensive.
I 'm not sure they know as much as I thought they did.
She did a lot of "uh huh" like she wished I'd quit telling her stuff. She didn't remember that she told me to gently flip the lantus. I tried
to tell her that was wrong and it should not get put in the door either. Too much vibration for it.
I'm the first one they've ever had go into remission and get so involved in her care.
Everyone else just gets spoon fed the usual vet treatment.
So a big :YMSIGH: SIGH :YMSIGH: of relief.. It's over.
I can't believe we came home to our usual good numbers. Guess we'll find out if it stays good all day.
Shadow is licking her shavedness. ;-)

Re: 10/17 Shadow AMPS 104 +2~79 +4.25~88 home!! trial tomor

Congrats on the good vetty visit and Shadow's numbers. Maybe that almost 10 point rise is high for her? Paws crossed here for good blood work results tomorrow. Is she still limping? Nice that she had no fuss about the nail trimming. Of course, if you were to try it at home, it might be a different story.

Yeah for the start of the trial tomorrow.

Hi Rhiannon, Glad the vet visit went well, Shadow got a nice mani -pedi and butt shave with no vet spike :-D . I am so happy Shadow starts OTJ trial tomorrow, no stopping her now. Savor her last dose tonight and Happy Day 0!

Re: 10/17 Shadow AMPS 104 +4.25~88 +6~98 home!! trial tomor

Let's do it, Shadow! Charlie's over here dropping her numbers just to follow your lead (I hope)! Keep up the great work, and I think it's great that you're considering helping others. The world needs more people with the same mindset.

Re: 10/17 Shadow AMPS 104 +4.25~88 +6~98 home!! trial tomor

Congrats! As a newbie, I am super excited for you.

I previously read the Lantus handling, but overlooked the NO rolling - which I've been doing b/c the vet told me to. So I will now also stop that. And, I have it in the side of the door, and I will stop that. Whole lot of stopping going on since I started this forum!!

Re: 10/17 Shadow AMPS 104 +4.25~88 +6~98 home!! trial tomor

Hi Rhiannon, very exciting with Shadow starting the OTJ Trial! Glad the Vetty visit went well, too!

Re: 10/17 Shadow AMPS 104 +4.25~88 +6~98 home!! trial tomor

Great vet visit with the blood draw, etc. Glad to hear it and hopefully all her tests will be normal. Interesting on your vet's perspective and thoughts. Oh well....

Congrats that you are starting a trial tomorrow provided there is no drama tonight!! Here's the instructions but I'll throw out one thing..quite often we add "on your next green PS"; Shadow's been so flat that if you want to start on a really low blue PS tomorrow, you could. But if she has a higher blue PS (like above 110 maybe), I'd wait until she has a lower one or a green PS:

  • Test at your normal AMPS and PMPS times. Feed multiple small meals throughout the day as much as possible (small meals are less likely to overwhelm a newly functioning pancreas).

  • If she is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time, just feed small meals and go about your day. If he is blue, feed a small meal and test again after about 3 hours. If his number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then his pancreas is working!

  • If the trial is successful, in 14 days, we have a party!!

Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens, we just give her the support she needs. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.

GOOD LUCK!

Re: 10/17 Shadow AMPS 104 +4.25~88 +6~98 home!! trial tomor

I'm glad everything went well at the vet today. I hope you get good bloodwork results tomorrow. That's so great you can start the trial tomorrow.

what does this mean? If I want to start ?

Not so thrilled that our shot time is 5:45 am ... :o but I guess another week before I gets to sleep like a normal person isn't a bad prospect.

Should I feed every 4 hrs for the night cycle too?
And do I get wet noodles if I test randomly just so I can see how we're doing?

Re: 10/17 Shadow PMPS 93 +2~76

So excited for you Rhiannon.

Poor shadow. All that extra grooming. I'm so glad that Fur Ball lets me trim all his nails. Such a good Fur Fat.

Re: 10/17 Shadow PMPS 93 +2~76 QUestions!!

Rhiannon, In OTJ trial, you are not actually shooting so you can be more flexible about AMBG and PMBG roughly 12 hours apart. Your choice about AMBG time tomorrow morning, you already gave Shadow her last shot earlier tonight. :-D Certainly this is your chance to shift your daily and nightly checks to a more convenient time if you want.

Re: 10/17 Shadow PMPS 93 +2~76 QUestions!!

You can test as much as you want. Only the usual pre-"shot" tests are what we ask for. How and when you feed is less important during a trial. You just don't want to overwhelm Shadow's pancreas with mountains of food.

BTW, the reason that you don't store insulin on the door of the refrigerator is not due to vibration. It's because the temperature is the least consistent on the door.

Re: 10/17 Shadow PMPS 93 +2~76 QUestions!!

Sienne,
I already feed often and smaller meals so every 4 hours isn't a problem. But we do/did have a 6 hr gap from bedtime till am shot.
I hadn't been able to get her to go from "nadir" to shot time in the day time. 5 hrs was the most she would allow.
Should I set an alarm for ever 4 hours at night for the next week?
And should I continue this feeding after the trial is over?

I had read it here somewhere ( maybe it was Carl that told me to be wary of the fridge door which can get slammed open and closed,
especially by other family members- think teenagers ! )
We aren't talking vibration, we're talking jarring....

Re: 10/17 Shadow PMPS 93 +2~76 QUestions!!

ohhh just loving this rhiannon... you must be so excited! :YMHUG:

and on the subject of jarring vials of lantus, i keep my little vial wrapped inside a cushion of layers of paper (the instruction insert that came with the vial i think actually) with a rubber band around it, and it fell on the floor today . do you think it has been possibly/probably damaged and I should go buy another?

cat_pet_icon Lots of pets for Shadow, the debutant!

Re: 10/17 Shadow PMPS 93 +2~76 QUestions!!

We normally like to see kitties start an OTJ trial on a green PS. But it is up to the CG. If you think she gets dawn phenomenon and always comes back down (which it looks like), then try the trial and see how it goes. You should know pretty early on. I think she will likely do fine.

You don't have to feed her every four hours and you don't have to make her AMBG/PMBG time what it is now. There is some flexibility. The main thing is, we want an AMBG, then feed her. If her AMBG is normal, we don't need to see other tests....that's up to you. If it is a little high, then test her in three hours to see if she's coming down. If she is, her pancreas is working.

Don't stress....this should be fun and you should get some rest...hopefully in your bed and not on the couch.

Re: 10/17 Shadow PMPS 93 +2~76 QUestions!!

Trial? YES!!!!!!!! Go Shadow!
ans I missed vetty day. Sounds like all is well! :-D
WOW - lots happening in Shadow's world.

love the numbers today - sorry for the late visit.

Re: 10/17 Shadow PMPS 93 +2~76 QUestions!!

so if she were at say, 110 in the morning, should I shoot one more time and wait for her more likely green pmps?
You know I want this to hold for her.

And when we are starting it, should I feed her every 4 hrs at night? I assume that's less stressful on her pancreas.

and here's my big wonder....
I know the vet was stressful. She lost tons of hair as she always does. She trembled for the first time just sitting there waiting.
Is her lack of a big bg spike a really good sign that her pancreas is taking care of business?

Re: 10/17 Shadow PMPS 93 +2~76 QUestions!!

It won't hurt to wait for a green PMPS if you are nervous about starting on a 110.

The point is to feed her small meals and not large ones. So feed her a small meal every hour or so until you go to bed. Then get some rest. Test her when you get up and then feed.

I dunno about the vet stress and whether her pancreas is working. Sometimes Gracie shows no vet stress in her BG, sometimes she does so I wouldn't use that as an indicator of her pancreas activity.

Re: 10/17 Shadow PMPS 93 +2~76 QUestions!!

hmm..
I'm not nervous. IF she still needs a little more help, I'm feeling good about the time frame.
Guess we'll see in the morning and if she's still blue, I'll go ahead and give her another drop.

Time for her to like theauto feeder I think... so she has some food in the middle of the night, if she wants it.
I wish it made noise when it opened.

and by the way, the vet's records says we showed up with her in 2001 , not 2000.
What a gift to find out that she's 11 1/2 years old, not 12 1/2.
Year 2000 was when we had the Cerro Grande fire and life was a blur back then. I thought we got her right after the fire but turns
out it was a year later.
