The AMPS is a fasting number, which is not always the case here in free-feeding-land.

Last night I came home with Kentucky Fried Chicken, and he fell upon it like a starving buzzard. Needless to say, I was elated! The 3 piece combo didn`t manage to fill us both up, so I shredded up some of the chicken I use to make his food (Dr Pierson's recipe with chicken, which he rejected recently and we switched to Friskies) and he ate all of it by morning. I assumed that we were going to return to the homemade food, based on his delight with the Kentucky Fried, and went to sleep happy and relieved!

This morning he was sitting up on the edge of the credenza -- animated, hungry and excited --watching the elaborate food preparations in the kitchen. He must have still had the taste of the KFC in his mouth though, as he couldn`t quite mask his disappointment when breakfast finally arrived. He really did try to like it cat_pet_icon and if I put some on a spoon and held it he would eat a little. And then he just spent a lot of time doing that thing with his tongue that babies do when they don`t like something...

An hour later he told me he was hungry again, so I got an idea and poured a little chicken flavored whiskas gravy on it - and he licked it off - managing to eat a little food in the process. I so was encouraged by this -- thinking I had found a brilliant solution to both needing his food to have a higher carb content and needing him to want to eat it (I think I may have actually done a little happy dance at this point, oh you silly bean!) -- that I proceeded to mix the whole packet of whiskas gravy into the food and presented it to him.

Of course, he barely sniffed it and then turned his head away.

I was so frustrated that I distracted myself by writing this post. angry(2)_cat

I`m not giving up Mr Meezer!! You WILL EAT!!

Re: 10/13 Reuben AMPS 99

It's so frustrating when they won't eat, we worry about them so much. Sounded like a great idea adding the gravy. I hope you come up with a solution that works for you both. I'm sure you probably have tried Fortiflora? I can get a couple of mine to eat absolutely anything with that on it. Muffin, on the other hand, doesn't care for it on her food, but she loves it by itself!

Re: 10/13 Reuben AMPS 99

Anne - Oh thank you so much for saying you think mixing the gravy in was a good idea, I feel less like a complete idiot now! And how I *wish* he liked forti flora, but nooo. Zero interest :-p

With the +3/76 I`m off the hook vis a vis having to find things to get him through nadir (at +3.5) with though, thank heavens!! It bought me time to figure out what to do, and my first thought is to reduce my stress level by just going back to KFC and getting the mega family bucket so at least he's happy and eating while I'm trying to figure it out. I`ll make the liver shake too, blech! but not til Monday when I can get the livers.

I don't remember if I passed along this list of "enticements":

Enticing a Cat to Eat

Here are some things you can do do entice your cat to eat:

-sometimes in order to get a cat to eat you even have to resort to dry it is more important that they eat. there are a couple low carb / grain free brands -- EVO and wellness core.

-making a buffet to give him choices
- heating food

sprinkle food with :
  • forta flora -- a probiotic you can get at vets or online. is very smelly and cats love the taste of it.
  • parmesean cheese
  • smashed crumbles of dry food
  • bonito/tuna flakes (Can be found at Asian markets or sometimes in the Asian food section of a large grocery store.)
  • halo chicken treats (freeze dried chicken) -- crumble into dust over food -- my Wolfie loves this stuff.
  • pour a little water from tuna in water over food (I use low sodium/no sodium added as other kinds in water has veg. broth in it and I assume that means onions, which are toxic to cats and it shouldn't contain soy -- check labels)
  • powdered oregano. yep sounds weird . but some cats like it and it will entice them to eat.

other ideas of foods to offer your kitty to stim appy:
  • trader joe tuna for cats
  • baby food -- beechnut or Gerber Stage 2 -- you want a baby food that is only a protein + broth (although the Gerber contains cornstarch). It should have no onions or other additives. some babyfoods have onions . please read labels.
  • kentucky fried chicken
  • deli turkey /chicken
  • plain cooked ( boiled or baked ) chicken breast
  • canned chicken for people (watch the label that their are no onions)
  • chicken broth -- low sodium

If enticements don't work, you should consider:
-assist feeding ( syringe or make little meatballs and place in mouth)
-and/or talking to your vet about appetite stimulents ( mirtazapine or cyproheptidine)

Re: 10/13 Reuben AMPS 99 2*68 3*76 5*72

Hi Alexa, Sorry Reuben is not eating, he knows that is not the preferred way to get green numbers. Jasper suggests you offer Reuben his favorite people foods (what else  ) - yogurt, tuna packed in water, melted cheese, and scrambled eggs. We discovered these and other likes from leaving plates unguarded a bit too long  Crazy cat tastes, maybe something willl help kick start Reuben's appy. The liver shake sounds icky to us but cats will eat raw mice, birds, etc so might do the trick.

Re: 10/13 Reuben PMPS 137

Reuben- You gotta eat your fuds to stay healthy. Just holding out for that KFC aren't ya?? Try not to frustrate momma any more (but at least she had a good sounding board!!!). Well, sounds like you have a treat coming on Monday with that Liver shake (ehhh to this bean!).

thanks for visiting Fur Ball's condo.

Apparently, Reuben and Shasta have been talking because Shasta's not very interested in her fuds. :-x She's probably just getting back at me for the vet visit...Reuben, what's your excuse? Oh yeah, you're a cat...you don't need an excuse! Well, eat your fuds anyways! Hope you guys have a lovely evening. Very nice pmps, by the way! Hope he surfs for ya!

Alexa

What a great mom you are making two runs to KFC. Of course, when you said you were going back for a bucket, I thought it was for you because I'd be stres eating

Sending eating vines for Reuben.
