Good Monday morning and sending out well wishes and prayers for Sid and Rocket and any others who need them today.

Gracie is my sweet, little, happy purry girl this morning and all is right in her world which is the most important thing. I was giving her hugs and scritches this morning at her breffis #2 and her coat is so incredibly beautiful and shiny....so soft. ..no one can believe she has FD. I think sometimes we lose sight of important things like that when we are wrapped up in numbers and I'm the worse at that. And while we are thrilled that she is like her pre-FD self (only better in the sense that she not had any bladder issues in 1-1/2 years..anti jinx), I still want to push as much as I can for her to get into and stay in normal numbers so that she does not lose more beta cells and her pancreas can heal. The jury is still out on this pen....I'm not seeing the duration in her cycles yet that she was having so not sure if it is her or the pen.

As some of you know, I have been discussing syringe accuracy....or should I say syringe INACCURACY....with Monoject. I should preface my comments by saying that I found the same or worse inaccuracy with Relion, BD, and even Terumo. I contacted the maker of MJ who sent me to the product manager at the distributor, Can Am. They had me send in many samples of the "inaccurate" syringes. They called this morning to say they have run tests including measuring doses with the syringes I sent them. Their summary is that their syringes are "within allowable specifications". Of course, that wasn't good enuff for me :-D I asked them what that specifically was...I mean lantus/leve are still "medications" that you have to have a script for and it can be very dangerous if not administered properly. The product manager stated that the syringes tested as being within the standards allowed by the FDA. They did suggest that I contact a gentleman who is a diabetes counsellor and has been pursuing this syringe inaccuracy issue with companies. They said he might have some suggestions for how to use the syringes that have variations and still be consistent in my dosing.

So....I'll contact him and let you all know. But insofar as MJ goes, they are within the allowable range of accuracy and so will not pursue this further. Oh yes...they were quite nice and empathetic to Gracie's "sensitivity" in even a minute dose in accuracy but....they are done with me

Off to breffis and then I'll be back to visit condos. Have a great day and I'll keep you posted on round 2 of the syringe issue.

Marje, thanks for all your effort in getting an answer to the issue to the MJ issue. I know it hasn't been easy. That will be interesting hearing what the Round 2 diabetes counsellor has to say.

Re: 1/23 Gracie AMPS 76 Monoject Update

Hi guys .. I totally agree with you Marjorie .. when mocha was on insulin, we were always worried about her numbers .. it was hard to look at the whole picture but we really need to do that .. Good luck with the syringe issue .. I bet if one of the makers or if anyone related to them had syringe issues they'd look more into it .. Have a great day!

Re: 1/23 Gracie AMPS 76 Monoject Update

 when i read your description of the MJ people - into my head popped this bumper sticker "well-behaved women rarely make history!"

sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do or people run all over you.

on the plus side, great to hear gracie's wcr and about her lovely coat - and what a super amps for her!

Re: 1/23 Gracie AMPS 76 Monoject Update

I guess "allowable" is what the world is all about now. grr_red Excuse this crotchety old geezer, but back in my day...

Re: 1/23 Gracie AMPS 76 Monoject Update

Nice AMPS for Gracie today! yay green!! Even better that she is a happy purry kitty. That is what it all is really about huh? One of my main resolutions this year was to not stress as much about the numbers, but pay more attention to how Tarragon acts like he is feeling. (That goes for Charlie as well since we have had so many knee issues with him.) We have already had a lot of fun this year with lots of play, cuddles, hugs.

I'm glad you pushed them on the syringe issue. You go girl!

Have a great day Marje!!

Re: 1/23 Gracie AMPS 76 Monoject Update

Hey Marje,
Nice amps for Gracie, and marvelous that her coat looks so great. Now, if all the numbers would just fall into place!!

Interesting on the Monojects. I've been using them for quite some time and haven't noticed many that have been off the mark. Of course, since this issue came up I've been looking at them more closely. The thing I like about them is that you hardly ever get bubbles. Bubbles can create innacuracies, so perhaps the absence of bubbles is a compensatory attribute.

Enjoy your day and tell my "other" best boy, Tobey, that the snow is rotting away in the heat wave. No sitting by the woodstove and munching cimmamum cookies today!!

Ella & Rusty

p.s. Thanks for your help with Rusty's dose last night. He's bounced today!

Re: 1/23 Gracie AMPS 76 Monoject Update

I put in a complaint about the ReliOn about 6 or so months ago.
Last week, I bought some ReliOn syringes and they came in a white box, rather than the blue box, I am used to.
I compared the syringes from the new box (with my limited eyesight) to the syringes from the old box and they seemed larger in barrel (but I could just be imagining that) to me, and the zero line was at the top. Yay! I hope the rest of them have consistant zero lines. I started using them on Saturday, so don't know if I was giving J.D. a different dose or not, as the syringes from the old box had the zero line down a bit from the top of the syringe.
The best part, so far, is that I have had no issues with bubbles :-D

Good luck to you on letting the Monoject people know about the problems you are having.

Oh and, Nice AMPS Gracie

Re: 1/23 Gracie AMPS 76 Monoject Update

Hi Marje.
Well 'allowable' to them is not, to a cat that uses half a drop of insulin!
You know what I"m getting at. I ain't as eloquent as you are. *grin*

Good for you, for dealing with the company.

Beautiful amps, Gracie :-D

Re: 1/23 Gracie AMPS 76 Monoject Update

Morning! and very nice cycle(s) for Gracie. YAY!

I'm with Ella - I also use the monojets, and have not noticed any issues. I also like that fact that I get no bubbles with them either. Good luck with your research- I will look forward to hearing what the diabetes guy says. Should be interesting. I've always loved that word: "allowable". sheshhhh!

Re: 1/23 Gracie AMPS 76 Monoject Update

What a beautiful start to the day for you and Gracie. It is so hard to look at the big picture, but that was my resolution too!

I think we have to see "allowable specifications" as a fact of life for the syringes as well as the meters (20% either way is a lot!) I've been counting drops for nearly 2 years now and I've got my work around.

I draw to the .5u mark and count out the drops to the end. Then I draw again to that same mark and drop by drop squeeze out the extra drops until i get to my dose. Some times i will do it several times if my count seems to be off. So:
  • I usually get 7 drops at the .5u mark
Tess is getting a sk.5u, 6 drops as I count them out
I draw to the .5u mark and count out the drops
If I get 7 drops, I draw to the .5 mark again and squeeze out 1 drop and shoot
If i get only 6 drops, I recheck, if that count is the same, I draw to the .5u mark and shoot that.

This works well for the really small doses, but I think most of the variance is where on the barrel the markings start, between the lines should be good. Try counting out drops from the .5u or 1u mark and figure out what you need for the partial unit. Then go a unit beyond that first mark and squeeze out the right number of drops.

Re: 1/23 Gracie AMPS 76 Monoject Update

Oh no I had not heard we were having issues with syringes as well

But oh yes for Gracie

Re: 1/23 Gracie AMPS 76 Monoject Update

Marje, Ann just brought back memories of Dr Nasty, last Sept, when he berated me for counting drops.
He cut me down for calling Check's tiny dose, a microdrop....."Insulin is dosed in units, not drops"
Ohhhhhhh, I could spit fireballs, remembering that day.

When Chex is on less than one unit, I count out drops, the way Ann does, and was surprised to learn that all syringes were not the same.

Re: 1/23 Gracie AMPS 76 Monoject Update

Very nice AMPS for Gracie!

Thank you for all your efforts with the MJ controversy. I have to say, their repsonse does not surprise me one bit. I cannot stand "it's good enough" standards in many aspects of life, but when it comes to something as important as a syringe, it's ridiculous (to put it politely.) Argh!!!

Re: 1/23 Gracie PMPS 188

Good evening everyone. Gracie had a rainbow day today so we went out and ran some errands including to switch out Gracie's levemir. I contacted the insulin company and told them I'd had some problem pens and they asked where I got them...I told them Costco so they called Costco and authorized them to dispense a new 5-pack to me and I took them the other ones to send back to the company. So we'll see if Gracie's great and then wonky and then great numbers over the last few months was due to the insulin or not.

Thanks for your wonderful comments on the syringes. I also love the MJs because I get no bubbles. That's very great interesting info from Dyana about the Relions because I quit using them and the BDs because of bubbles and inaccuracies. I am thrilled to hear they may have gotten that sorted out.

Ann: wow....can you make a video of that?   I've tried to do my drops like you say but I think I'm just a dummy. For her sk1.25u, I draw 1.5u and then take it down three drops. I've gone through all the doses and written down how many drops to each dose and made sample syringes. But I don't draw, redraw, etc. Sounds like I might need to put my patience pants on for that!!

Sienne: I did mention to them that perhaps I might call the FDA and that's when they said they meet the allowable standards but perhaps I should go ahead and make that call and let the FDA decide.

Sorry I did not get to condos this morning....between the MJ people, trying to find strips on ebay, and then talking to DMs nurses, etc, ....my morning flew by and then we went out. Have a great evening.

Re: 1/23 Gracie PMPS 188

Nice numbers last night...
have to tell you that once you tell these companies that the syringes are for a cat, you have lost the argument!
To them the only oops for them is if they screw up with a human, they dont really feel a responsibility to an animal...Sorry but that is what I have found with these companies--
Glad to see how well Gracie is doing--Hope it continues! Hugs & Lubs from us!

Vyktors Mum said:

Ditto that!

Sigh. Something else to think about. . .It is hard enough to measure .5u and I think it hurts my brain to think about drops!

Re: 1/23 Gracie PMPS 188

Roni: I never told them it was for a cat. I told them it was my "child". They never asked me if she was a human child or not so I believe they are under the impression she is of the human genus and not the cat one.   I knew darn well that if I said she was a cat, conversation over. Although interestingly, they asked me why I wasn't using the pen needles. I just told them she got a dose less than 1u that was difficult to dial in.

Kim: yup....always sumpin!
