Yesterdays Crisis

The Dr says I need to see improvement by noon today or she will have to be hospitalized. I'm scared like crazy

I woke up at 6 to give her some odansetron. I offered her some food, but she didn't want it. She just went back to her spot in the closet and layed down. I'm hoping it's because I had just woken her up, so she is groggy. Of course, that's wishful thinking on my part. Noon is in 5 hours, I'm praying hard she starts to improve....

DH and I had a huge fight last night about another hospitalization , so I really really hope she starts to eat. Long story short, he doesn't want to have any more extra finiancial struggles, with two toddlers to feed/cloth, because of "a cat" I can understand where he's coming from. He alone is responsible for supporting me and the kids. He works so hard to provide. He's been so understanding and supportive of what's been going on with Garland since her diagnosis, even learning how to test and give her shots. But of course I was up all night crying, worried out of my mind...

So please, everyone pray as hard as you can for the next 5 hours...and thank you all for all the support. You are my rock

Re: 12/10 Garland new condo- Very sick :(

I am hoping she starts to recover Violet. Are you continuing with the food/insulin/fluids?

I remember how mad my husband was in 2008 when Maverick had his crisis. They are wired differently - that's why we are the moms.

Sending big hugs.

Re: 12/10 Garland AMPS 201- Very sick :(

OMG OMG OMG!!! She just ate something!!!! Thank you all for praying! It's a baby step, but any improvement is better than none. :) :) :)

I put down her favorite canned food , FF gravy lovers. She took one sniff and walked away. So I thought maybe if she tasted it, she would think "YUM! I want more of that" :) So I put some gravy on her nose to lick off. She then went over and ate on her own!!! Like 3 big bites and 10 gravy licks. I'm getting encouraged!! 4 hours left until noon.. Keep praying !!!! :)

AMPS 201- still giving half dose of a skinny 2.0u

Re: 12/10 Garland AMPS 201- Very sick :(

(((((Violet))))))

Has she had anything to eat or drink at all?

ETA - postiing at the same time - YAY for eating! ! !

Re: 12/10 Garland AMPS 201- Very sick :(

(((((((Violet)))))) My prayers are with you and Garland. Come on Garland eat a little more...you CAN beat this!

Re: 12/10 Garland AMPS 201- Very sick :(

I am sending prayers and healing vines for both of you. Have you ever tried finger feeding her before? Maybe she will take a bit more if you place it gently in her mouth or let her lick it off your finger. Keep the amounts small so she doesn't vomit. It is encouraging that she ate a bit.

Re: 12/10 Garland AMPS 201- Very sick - a baby step :)

Awesome update!!! A mouthful of food often primes the appetite engine. Keep it up Garland!

Re: 12/10 Garland AMPS 201- Very sick - a baby step :)

Keep eating, Garland!! Any step in a forward direction is a good thing.

Remember to test for ketones. Did the vet say anything about fluids?

Re: 12/10 Garland AMPS 201- Very sick - a baby step :)

"Like 3 big bites and 10 gravy licks." -- oh, so glad to read that, Violet! All fingers and paws crossed here for Garland to start eating more for you.

Thinking of you two today, Violet. You're such a lovely kitty mom!

Come on Garland, eat some more!

PRAYING...PRAYING...PRAYING...won't stop til she eats!

Tawny is supposed to come this weekend, she DOES NOT NEED ANY COMPANY IN THE HOSPITAL!!!!

PRAYING...PRAYING...PRAYING...

Re: 12/10 Garland AMPS 201- Very sick - a baby step :)

She just ate a smidge bit more. :) 2-3 bites and a couple gravy licks :) I know it doesnt sound like much, but the Dr said if the antibiotic is working, then she will slowly get better over the next 36 hours. He said this morning to look for small improvements like licking her food. Yay!! We are headed in the right direction !!! 2.5 hours left until noon . Maybe she won't have to be hospitalized after all :)

If this works then I can't believe all this was started bc of that e tube incision I had been asking about for months :( I should have been more aggressive about it :(

He gave 200cc fluids last night, so I won't give any until these all absorb. Probably tommorow night ?

Insulin- keep it at half dose ?

I will get a ketone test at noon with a BG reading . I'm trying not to poke at her too much

Re: 12/10 Garland AMPS 201- Very sick - a baby step :)

Re: 12/10 Garland AMPS 201- Very sick - a baby step :)

Great news about the eating some on her own ((((((Violet))))) sending lots of feel better vines and prayers for Garland

Re: 12/10 Garland AMPS 201- Very sick - a baby step :)

She just ate a little more!!! And this time I opened a new can, and she came out of the closet when she heard the lid pop. I can really tell she's slowly improving now! She even groomed herself and was sitting up for a bit.

I know your healing prayers are guiding her :)

NEW EDIT-I'm gonna wait another hour to test. I don't want to bother her while she seems interested in food. she just took a few more bites!!!

Re: 12/10 Garland AMPS 201- Very sick - Improvement :)

Oh good! That is great to hear! Go Garland, keep eating. Big hugs, Violet, you are doing great too. Hindsight is 20/20. Don't beat yourself up about it.

Little miss Garland...Lantus Land is cheering for you as much as audiences EVER did for your namesake...
so keep rallying! :-D

Re: 12/10 Garland AMPS 201- Very sick - Improvement :)

Violet --

You need to keep the relationship between food, infection, ketones, and insulin in mind. If Garland wants to eat only HC, that's fine. I want to be sure she eats and her numbers don't tank but you don't want to drop the insulin and have to deal with ketones either. It's a balancing act.

Re: 12/10 Garland AMPS 201- Very sick - Improvement :)

Garland, can you hear the cheers from Lantus Land? Keep on getting stronger and stronger. ((((Violet))))

Hugs to you all,

Re: 12/10 Garland AMPS 201 +6 208 Very sick - Improvement :)

Ketones about the same 4.2

+6 208

She is taking bites of food. Just a few minutes ago, she ate a bunch :) But only the gravy food and not even close to the amount she should be eating. I've offered baby food, LC, and HC. All different flavors (been throwing out food yikes) I haven't noticed her drink anything though? Unless she snuck that while I was in another room

Sienne- I was thinking the same thing . I'm not sure how comfortable I am only giving her half doses for much longer.... Especially if she begins to eat more, and only gravy

Re: 12/10 Garland AMPS 201 +6 208 ---Getting better by the h

She's doing so good !! Finally came out of the closet and jumped up on the bed to snooze. :-D She has even been going over to the food bowl to eat without me prompting her. Even meowed her annoyance at me when I tried to move the comforter  This antibiotic is wonderful !!!

Re: 12/10 Garland AMPS 201 +6 208 ---Getting better by the h

What a great update!!!! Violet you are doing a wonderful job handling all this. :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Re: 12/10 Garland AMPS 201 +6 208 Very sick - Improvement :)

Violet, after Tawny, I totally agree w/Sienne too. Insulin & calories fight ketones. I am so glad I did not halve Tawny's dose when the vet told me to last Sunday night when she had such high BBK readings.

I as yet don't have any hands-on experience with the SubQs, so I don't know if giving fluids is the thing to do right now or not. I know insulin is key. I know the 2nd time Tawny went to the hospital I syringed 5ccs of water into her slowly every couple of hours all day long b4 she actually went back to the ER.

Someone in one of Tawny's condos recently said s/thg about giving her cat Pedialite to ward off dehydration too, tho I have no experience w/that either.

You wouldn't happen to have any Pedialite lyin' around there w/all those toddlers running around the house would you?

I am soooooooooooo glad Garland is improving! Keep up the good work, girls.

Just catching up on Garland's day - wonderful to see her progressing an feeling better :-D

Re: 12/10 Garland AMPS 201 +6 208 ---Getting better by the h

You actually can give too much fluid. I don't know what the safe amounts are so if what's been given yesterday at the vet's office isn't absorbed, I would not give more. Too much fluid can really, really be a problem. If you need more into on fluids, I'd post on Health or call the ER for that info.

Oh I can still see these fluid pockets. I had no intention of giving her any sq fluids tonight at all. I was just noticing she hadn't drank any water from her bowl. Is that okay ?

Violet, we are so happy to hear that Garland is doing much, much better. Can't help you with the technical stuff, but can continue to send lots and lots of healing vines to your girl.

Hugs,

Great news that Garland is feeling better and eating. Sending 'keep eating' vines and speedy recovery vines to Garland.

Re: 12/10 Garland AMPS 201 +6 208 PMPS 202 - one day at a ti

PMPS 202- gave her 3.5u- this was the dose she has been on for awhile and was doing so well with

I have started mixing the FF Gravy Lovers with her LC variety so I can transition her away from the yummy HC

Shes still very out of it. Sleeping a ton. But the fact she came out of her "sick" closet to sleep on the bed is a great sign!!

I'm gonna take this one day at a time. I hope every day she keeps getting better and doing all I can for her. Thank you everyone for the support, the kind words, the prayers and the encouragement :)

--omg-- as I'm typing this, she just came out of the bedroom and jumped up on my lap!! :-D

Re: 12/10 Garland AMPS 201 +6 208 PMPS 202 - one day at a ti

That's great news! If Garland isn't drinking, it's probably because of the fluids she has. I wouldn't worry about it. I would get a urinary ketone level whenever you can. Between the infection and her still not eating as much as usual, ketones could be a danger. Just stay on top of this. I know it's a rough juggling act and this hasn't been easy on you or on Garland.

Forgive me if i'm getting involved...but i feel i'm compelled to say something about subq fluids....I've been giving them to Rocket since May 2008.....i still don't consider myself an expert.....

are you sure what you feel is not loose skin...sagging skin after the fluids are absorbed? or is the pouch still full of fluids? if the former is what you feel then she needs fluids...if the latter than no fluids needed until absorbed....

does that make sense?

Rocket tends to get loose skin under the front legs...sort of the armpits....

not sure you have access to a pc so here is what i know of subq....bare in mind where i get this info is more CRF related so that does not apply to Garland....

Another Excerpt Follows:
--------------------------
(Question: Should a cat getting 150ml every two days switch to a daily dosage.)

The main reason I see for increasing frequency is to control dehydration. If the kitty doesn't seem overly dehydrated two days after a treatment, then that timing is probably ok. Depending on weight, amount of other fluid intake, etc., this may be the case. For a lot of people (but not all, there are no universal rules), it doesn't seem like it's worth it to stick the kitty for less than 100ml. If much more than 150 ml was needed at a time, I personally would consider spreading out the dose. Clinical dehydration evidences, I believe, at about 5% of body weight (correct me if I'm wrong). Rounding the measurements crudely, at 4 oz for 100 ml, this means that a 5 lb cat (80 oz) would be clinically dehydrated at 100 ml deficit. If the dosage was 200 ml every two days, after treatment, there would be a reserve of 100 ml. After 1 day, hydration would be "normal". After 2 days, when the next treatment was due, he would be clinically dehydrated. Switching to 100 ml daily would seem logical (starting one day after the last 200ml dose), in that it would maintain a level always at or above a "normal" state of hydration.

http://www.felinecrf.org/subcutaneous_f ... _of_fluids

I suspect that some cats who have had severe crashes may possibly require more fluids than cats who are diagnosed early and whose CRF progresses gradually. Thomas wasn't a massive cat, but he still required 300ml a day to start with following his crash. Even after his creatinine level stabilised at 316 (US: 3.5), he still required 200ml a day, divided into two sessions, in order to maintain hydration.

The key words in the previous sentence are "in order to maintain hydration". If your cat's bloodwork worsens, this doesn't automatically mean that the fluid amount should be increased. Giving more than is needed to maintain hydration is a strain on the kidneys (see when to use sub-cutaneous fluids), can make a cat feel uncomfortable, and of course costs more.

When deciding on how much fluid to give, you need to monitor your cat for dehydration and check that the fluid is being properly absorbed. A pouch is normal, and it usually takes 6-8 hours for the fluids to be absorbed, though some cats take longer. Many people find the simplest way to monitor their cat's need for fluids is by means of a weighing scale: you can weigh your cat regularly and if his/her weight goes down, this may indicate dehydration; if the cat's weight increases, the cat may be retaining fluid and at risk of overhydration. Coco's Page has more information on how to do this, and the Treatments page has information on obtaining accurate scales.

If you have the level of sub-Qs right, your cat will no longer drink massive amounts of water.

I truly hope you find the above helpful....

sending many prayers your way.....

I am just now catching up with everything and am so happy to hear that Garland is eating a little and even jumping up on your lap. Will continue to pray for healing.

Claudia is a wonderful resource on subq fluids. She has been such a help to me and she posted some great information.
