Previous day's condo above.

This is how 11/17 went:

All readings are on an AlphTrak Monitor (subtract 30 points to get the true reading)

AMPS - 200
Gave .10 units Lantus
Fed 1/4 can FF Classic Chicken Feast mixed with another tsp Purina DM at 10:30am
+3 - 147
+4 - 93 (this is probably about the time I should have fed HC food)
+6 - 89
+7 - 67
Fed 2 Tbs Friskies Chicken and Gravy
+7.25 - 76
+8 - 93
+9 - 79
Fed 2 Tbs Friskies Chicken and Gravy
+9.5 - 146
+10 - 152
PMBG - 163
Skipped evening injection.

So, I have many questions about doing an OTJ trail. Is there a sticky somewhere that explains what to do?
I was thinking I would still give the .10 units of Lantus at the AMPS this morning (if it's about 150) and try to catch the drop with HC food.

Hi Cathy, that's exciting! Definitely need to get expert opinion on how to handle it. Good luck!

This is what I posted last night in your condo. The instructions for an OTJ trial are noted.

With the low numbers today and the 0.1u dose that Cini Mini is at, you might want to try an "OTJ Experiment." I'll be honest, I'm not sure if Cini is ready. On the other hand, it may be that he's been getting more insulin than he needs and once you stop shooting, his numbers will level out. Ordinarily, with an OTJ trial we suggest testing at your usual pre-test times. The instructions for a trial are as follows:
  • Test at your normal AMPS and PMPS times. Feed multiple small meals throughout the day as much as possible (small meals are less likely to overwhelm a newly functioning pancreas).
  • If he is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time, just feed small meals and go about your day. If he is blue, feed a small meal and test again after about 3 hours. If his number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then his pancreas is working!
  • Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens, we just give him the support he needs. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.

Re: 11/18 - Cini Mini - Off The Juice Trial?

Hi Sienne, thanks for that re-post.

In that post you also said that you didn't think Cini was ready to be OTJ. Can you elaborate on what you meant by that? That's why I'm confused, should I give him an injection this morning and manage with HC food or do the OTJ trial?

Re: 11/18 - Cini Mini - Off The Juice Trial?

Ordinarily, when a cat is ready to go OTJ, there are more green pre-shots and less bouncing. (Look at Binks' SS for an example.) However, sometimes if a cat really doesn't need the insulin, they bounce around. You had a significant drop yesterday on a tiny bit of insulin. The only way to know if no insulin will stop the bouncing is to stop shooting. I would keep an eye on the numbers and if it looks like some insulin is needed, it's no big deal.

OK, thanks Sienne.

I guess we will let Cini tell us what to do today and see what his AMBG reading is here in 30 mins. cat_pet_icon

Re: 11/18 - Cini Mini - Off The Juice Trial - AMBG 180 Alpha

HA HA! He's 180 on the AlphaTrak (which is 150 on a regular monitor) so I guess he wants to try an OTJ trial today

Wish us luck ! :-D

Re: 11/18 - Cini Mini - Off The Juice Trial - AMBG 180 Alpha

Cathy --

Get a test about 3 hours after Cini's breakfast to see if her pancreas kicks in and pulls the numbers down.

OK, will do!

Re: 11/18 - Cini Mini - OTJ Trial - AMBG 180, +3/177 AlphaTr

+3 reading was 177 which is only slightly lower than the AMBG. I am assuming that's good? When should I test again?

Re: 11/18-Cini Mini-OTJ Trial-AMBG 180,+3/177,+6/173 AlphaT

+6 inching ever so slightly down to 173 (143 for AlphaTrak adjustment)

Re: 11/18-Cini Mini-OTJ Trial- +6/173,+9/165, PMBG 176 Alpha

Ended they day with a PMBG of 176 (146 adjusted), not a bad day :-D
