Good Morning LL and Happy Monday,

Leo had a good test, shoot and feed. I had a furry, purry kitty that woke me up again an hour before his shot time for some cuddles and purrs, but when it was time for his insulin he did not want to get out of bed.

It snowed all day yesterday and we got quite a bit, so winter has arrived! Mousing season is probably done for the year

We hope all kitties and beans are doing well and BTB for a bit for the both of us.

Re: 11/7 Leo AMPS 124

Nice start for Leo this morning, Oh no, Leo so no more mousies with all the snow!! Bummer for sure! Mags does the same thing with a wake-up call and then fast asleep when shot time due! Then it's our time to wake them up from a rem sleep, Have a nice day and keep warm.

Re: 11/7 Leo AMPS 124

Hi guys,
Leo, thank you for the mouse soup! I am very lucky that you made it before all that snow put an end to mousing season!! Hope you and your mamabean are having a good btb and will have a lovely day today. Nice amps!

Re: 11/7 Leo AMPS 124, +4 74 going to try making cat food

So i've been checking out Dr. Lisa's making cat food website and have decided to try making a batch for Leo. I don't want to spend a fortune on a meat grinder, but will buy one if its under $100. I've also found a butcher shop that does custom cutting and figure if i asked they could grind up some chicken thighs with the meat, skin and bones for Leo.

I'm hoping that Leo will love eating raw but i won't make him switch to 100% raw just yet. If only we could find enough mousies to make raw mouse food!

So today's mission will be to head out and buy all the supplements, price out grinders and head to the butcher shop to see if they'll grind up some chicken for us. Maybe before i buy a grinder (just because i don't know if he'll actually like eating raw food) i'll go to the butcher shop first. My friend also told me about a local pet store that sells raw food that i should check out as well, but who knows what ingredients will be in that, but they might have some good supplements there that i can buy.

Re: 11/7 Leo AMPS 124, +4 74 going to try making cat food

Now that sounds like a plan! We have made a couple of batches and it's surely worth it, but if the butcher will do the grinding you're home free!

Re: 11/7 Leo AMPS 124, +4 74 going to try making cat food

Hi guys .. nice numbers for leo today! Bum deal on the end of mousing season leo, but there is always next year! Have you checked out your local craigslist for a meat grinder? They might be cheaper on there, worth a shot if the butcher doesn't come through .. have a great day guys!

Re: 11/7 Leo AMPS 124, +4 74 going to try making cat food

Well i thought i would call Leo's Dr. and find out what she thought about making kitty fuds. She doesn't agree with making raw, she wants me to cook it a little, just enough to get rid of all the bad food poisoning stuff. Hmmmmm i never thought about that. She was going to get back to me today about what supplements to add and how much.

Re: 11/7 Leo AMPS 124, +4 74 going to try making cat food

On Dr. Lisa's food making site here talks about her decisions regarding raw vs. partially cooked. We have been going the patially cooked route to guard against contamination. For 20 lbs of chicken legs we baked at about 375 for about 40 minutes. The outsides looked mostly cooked, which is where the bacteria would be. The interior is about 50% cooked. Of course the finished product has to be treated like raw. I am on constant "raw chicken" alert nowdays. That is a downside to making the transition, but I must say, my kitchen has never been cleaner  Bleached dishes at every feeding.

I didn't think of that angle when you mentioned the butcher.

Re: 11/7 Leo AMPS 124, +4 74 going to try making cat food

We started out just giving Tess a few chunks of raw meat to see if she would eat it. Instant fan! :-D You might try a batch without the ground bone in it, add the bone meal that Dr. L is now recommending. If you do that you don't really need to grind, I just chunk all the meat (after partial cooking to kill anything on the surface) Tess prefers the chunks to the "mush" and it is great for her teeth. Some cats don't like the taste of the fish oil. So I would start low to get him used to it, then increase the amount. Great idea about the butcher, I was wondering if ours would do that w/ rabbit.

Check on eBay for the grinder. I've seen them there for just over $100.

Re: 11/7 Leo AMPS 124, +4 74 going to try making cat food

Thanks Linda and Ann, you are just the 2 i had hoped would jump in with experiences!! :-D

My mom feeds Leo raw chicken and raw ground beef whenever she cooks it and Leo is a major fan! He loves raw fish too. Maybe i'll just try the chunks first off with the bone meal in it, instead of buying a grinder now because i'm not sure how much he'll like the new diet. I don't even know what bone meal is or where to buy it from. I bought some fish oil capsules that i broke open to put into Leo's food and he wouldn't eat it, but i'm thinking if its mixed in with a bunch of other nummy stuff he won't notice it. So do you ladies use fish oil or salmon oil?

Thanks Linda for telling me how long to cook the chicken for, i wondered about that as well.

Ok......off to go shopping now!

Re: 11/7 Leo AMPS 124, +4 74 going to try making cat food

Tracy,

I remember seeing something, somewhere warning not to feed raw fish. I wasn't considering it myself, so made no mental note of it other than it's a a no-no.

Re: 11/7 Leo AMPS 124, +4 74 going to try making cat food

Ok so i've been out shoppin all afternoon and got most of the ingredients to make Leo and friends (my parents cats, Leo's brother Toban and Kathy) kitty fuds. I still need to find powdered vitamin E (does it have to be powdered?), bonemeal and taurine. I met a nice lady who was the manager at the health food store and she swore that her cats loved Norweigan (sp?) Cod Liver Oil in their homemade cat food so that's what i got as fish oil. I bought lots of chicken liver and hearts as well too. So my momma and I will be making the fuds on Wednesday!

Re: 11/7 Leo AMPS 124, +4 74 going to try making cat food

my squeamish self had to wear blindfolds to come in your condo today, but i at least wanted to say hi.

given leo's love of mousies, i'm sure he'll enjoy the raw fuds. :-D

Re: 11/7 Leo AMPS 124, +4 74 going to try making cat food

I know i'm a pretty special kitty that gets his very own special fuds..........i'm a spoiled brat!

Why so squeamish Julie?!?!

Re: 11/7 Leo AMPS 124, +4 74 going to try making cat food

Hope the food experiment is a winner. You have my admiration for making homemade food. I just am not sure I could do all that grinding up and mixing together. I am also a little squeamish when it comes to that. I'm sure Leo will love the food since he likes mice. I tried giving Simon some raw food I got at the pet specialty store near me and he just turned his nose up at it. Very finicky!

Re: 11/7 Leo AMPS 124, +4 74 going to try making cat food

Wow!!!! I can't wait to hear how all this turns out!! You would think that if ANY cat would love raw, it would be Leo....little mouser! Maybe there is some way you could press the food into a mouse shape

You are such a great mom, Tracy!!! Have fun making the fuds!!

Re: 11/7 Leo AMPS 124, +4 74 going to try making cat food

I would look at Dr. Lisa's site for the proportion of liver to muscle meat. You don't want to feed too much liver.

FWIW, I used a pre-mix when I was feeding Gabby and Giz raw. I used the grinder attachment for my stand mixer and it handled the chicken just fine. I also would package the chicken into 1/4 cup patties and freeze them so there was no risk of spoilage.

Re: 11/7 Leo AMPS 124, +4 74 going to try making cat food

I'm full of admiration at this new venture, but I'm glad I'm not doing it!!! Have fun, Tracy! I'm sure Leo the Mauser will love it.

Re: 11/7 Leo PMPS 90

Thanks gals, i didn't realize how many people were squeamish about making cat food. We've gotten to a point where Leo is so fussy and i'm still feeding him mostly MC foods, he's turning up his nose at his old LC foods so i'm thinking (actually hoping) he's really going to like homemade cat food. He eats great for my parents and will eat whatever they feed him, but with me its a different story, i think he knows i'll open a million cans of cat food until he finds the one he really wants.

My momma is helping me with this venture, just because i don't have a kitchen that's big enough!

Re: 11/7 Leo PMPS 90

What great numbers for Leo today! So great that he is all better. Fun day for you today! Yay! Good luck on your food making adventure! I can't wait to hear how it turns out! Have a great night Tracy and scritches to Leo!

Leo! My bean said something about mousies being gone because of the snow. What??!?? Oh no. We don't have snow here. I bet there are mousies in the woods behind my house. Come over if you can. - Tarragon

Re: 11/7 Leo PMPS 90

Hi guys! WOW - a ton of info here today. Good luck with the raw diet. I hope making your own goes over well, with you and with leo. I've never tried... maybe one of these days. :-D

It is great to see Leo back to the greens! YAY!!!

   Oh i definitely need that mousie shape for Leo!!!!

Tarragon!! No snow there!??? I'll bet there are still lots of mousies there.....i'm on my way

Re: 11/7 Leo PMPS 90

Good luck w/ the food making. Here is a video on making raw that you might like to watch. She uses pre-ground meat but the mixing process is the same. I'll send those extra supplies tomorrow.
