The hurricane is going to hit us Saturday night :shock: I hope the electricity doesn't go out otherwise I won't be able to cook or do much of anything :shock: I have bread and canned stuff just in case, though. And canned food for the civies.

Likewise on the hurricane. This thing is just annoying me. I usually do my weekly food shopping on Saturday's after work, but I figured it would be insane and the shelves would be wiped out by then, so I went tonight after work. There was no point...the shelves were already wiped out. I didn't realize mushrooms and bananas were so popular! I can only imagine how long it's going to take the stores to restock. While this is a big, nasty storm, I can't stand the wide spread panic that the media is creating...if everyone would keep their heads about them, we'd all be OK - and no one would starve to death!

I hear ya on hurricane coverage. The worst is when your family starts calling you from middle America because Jim Cantore is on some beach somewhere and it is REALLY WINDY!!!! I remember the day I happened to be evacuating from a hurricane to Las Vegas (trip already planned... how fortuitous!), and my normally level-headed friend was suddenly INSISTENT that we get to the airport 6 hours early b/c her father kept calling her, telling her to RRRRUUUUUUNNNNNN b/c they were allegedly shutting down the airport and all the roads. I finally just gave in and forced her to start drinking at the airport bar. That helped tremendously!! :lol: :lol: :lol:

We then had another evacuation the following week, but the police said I could stay in my house b/c it was properly constructed, was only 1 block into the evac zone and I had proper storm shutters. We holed up for 2 days, ate cheez-its and drank arbor mist (we went with a "redneck riviera themed evacuation party) and made fun of the tv announcers who had not slept for 4 days and were completely looped.

My personal favorite (Seriously, not hyperbole):

"And now, we're going live to Suzy Smith, who is currently on location on Hollywood Beach. Suzy, what are you seeing out there? Any danger of falling coconuts??"
"Well, Bob, things here are really windy and rainy. But, no coconuts have yet fallen here on the beach. Oh wait, one just fell. Back to you, Bob."

I went to the supermarket on Wednesday and again yesterday :smile: The shelves were fully stocked then. I went to the specialty market across the street today for milk and while it was busy, nothing was running low or empty. The counters where you get deli stuff and store-made meals and bakery were busy but no more than usual. The regular supermarkets are probably empty of bread and other things by now.

I know. The media always makes a big deal out of storms. Sometimes the storm isn't as bad as the media kept saying it would be :roll: One year the local media made a big deal out of a Nor'easter and it ended up being only a minor storm :roll:

I asked my supervisor today if he had a plan on how to get the usual weekend stuff covered. He had no idea :shock: We spent a good 15 minutes discussing what needed to be done, the impact to studies if things weren't done, if things can be rescheduled, who lived the closest in case our usual weekend person can't get in on Sunday. In the end, the manager said that if people can't get in, then don't worry about the work. Safety is more important.

I never thought about it before...Jim Cantore is always on the beach during storms, isn't he??? How'd he get that job? I bet they don't send him out there when it's all sunny and pretty, do they?

This is nuts... we have to "conserve" our half loaf of bread because the rest of NJ apparently believes it will never be available again....
