Is the weekend here yet?!?!? Another crazy couple days here. Problems with getting Willie's pen refilled spilled over into today. Called our new vet today and told them that if they wanted to see Willie to feel comfortable issuing a script, I was cool with that. Apparently, the issue was actually the use of the pens as they don't prescribe them. After I explained slowly that I was using the pen as a mini-vial, drawing the insulin out with a syringe and that I was only using the pens because they were more cost effective, a lightbulb came on for the vet. When I explained that we were on day 29 or so of a room temp pen and that I was noticing a marked increase in his numbers, the vet's sense of urgency kicked in and we had a refill called in within a half hour. So tonight we start a new pen. We're also temporarily back to using the Advocate meter, which tends to run on the high side of the 20% MOE (while the Relion, for us, ended up on the low end). With that in mind, that 186 is looking pretty good tonight. I just have 200 strips expiring in October and with my budget right now, I can't really justify letting them go to waste. When we're done with them, the Advocate will most likely be retired for good.
Another positive bit of news... we have made the switch back to a homemade raw diet (using Dr. Lisa's Willie-specific recipe) and it has gone even more smoothly than I had anticipated. I've got all that venison in the freezer and all the supplements, so really couldn't justify spending money on cases of Wilderness and BG until some of that was cleared out. He's been nom-nom'ing away, which is a relief. Plus, there's just something really nice about watching your pet enjoy a meal that you made for them. Also learned that my large non-stick roasting pan works far better than a large bowl for mixing up a batch of raw food. Almost 9 lbs of meat/liver and 7 cups of water with supplements dissolved in it... yeah, waaaayyyyy easier!! helps having a (finally properly installed) dishwasher as well!
Gotta run... a dear friend from work had elective surgery yesterday so I spent last evening at the hospital with her. She was supposed to come home today, but they're keeping her on a being cautious technicality, so I promised to stop by tonight as well. I really just want to curl up on the couch... spent half the day working at home until I realized I had two major projects that I needed to finish... and the stuff for them was at the office. Barely caught the UPS driver to get it sent off. Whew!!
Hope everyone has a great evening!
