Re: 5/26 Trixie AMPS 134 +2 167 +4 114

Maybe I got spoiled with all those nice green runs, but I'm not thrilled with these numbers at all, and I'm baffled by the sudden food spikes. I'm going to try switching her back to BG this evening and see what happens over the next few cycles...if she starts giving me better numbers again, then I'll know it's (probably) the Wellness.

Re: 5/26 Trixie AMPS 134 +2 167 +4 114

Trixie's not terribly picky and she handles quick transitions like a champ...I don't need to slowly switch her over. She does like the taste of Wellness better than BG, but I'm curious to see if the Wellness is causing the food spikes. She had been virtually food-spike free since she started eating BG earlier this month (after BarfFest 2011), and now these past two days, the spike is back.

Or, maybe this reduction isn't sticking, although she did really well with it for a number of cycles.

Then again, maybe I'm just looking for solid answers where none exist...this is FD, after all!

Re: 5/26 Trixie AMPS 134 +2 167 +4 114

Amy, I would try switching back to the other food and see if the numbers improve.

Mr Tinkles gets big food spikes from Wellness, I don't use it for that reason. Not all cats have that reaction, it really is an ECID thing. I also can't use FF for LC, I use it as a MC food because that's how it works for Tinkles.

Re: 5/26 Trixie AMPS 134 +2 167 +4 114

Very interesting that Mr T (lol...envisioning big gold chains and medallions!) spikes on Wellness. I'm definitely suspicious, and am very curious to see how it plays out with switching back.

What's also interesting is that Wellness was Trixie's primary diet when this whole diabetes thing started out, although she also did eat Orijen kibble as probably about 30% of her diet. Of course, the kibble was completely removed as soon as we found out she was diabetic....

I don't like them either! Ditch that Wellness.

If that doesn't straighten her out, you may need to go back up....she did have nice numbers until the Wellness though. I can't even use Wellness as a MC food for Tinkles because not only does it spike his numbers, they stay up there for several hours....it lasts too long.

Wellness is ditched! She'll be bummed, but these numbers are so not cool. Hopefully that will fix this little issue, although I'm sure it may take a few cycles to see for sure.

Hi guys .. sorry to see trixie is up a little higher then we like .. Hopefully with the food switch she'll come back down to the green's for you soon .. have a great day guys!

Re: 5/26 Trixie AMPS 134 +2 167 +4 114 +6.75 163!!

I've been suspicious of Wellness for a while now. I had read somewhere that it may cause food spikes, though I can't remember where I read this. I even asked about it in Champ's condo last week or the week before...again, can remember (one day just seems to blur into the next!!). Because I bought so much Wellness since buying in bulk was Cheaper, I still have 25 LARGE cans in my cupboard...way too much to waste. And I got it mail order so I don't think I can take it back to my local PetSmart and have them exchange it for me. I did go out and buy a bunch of FF and now I'm taking turns with feeding the different foods. How weird that Wellness would cause a spike...what could be in it that would cause that?

Re: 5/26 Trixie AMPS 134 +2 167 +4 114 +6.75 163!!

Some cats take several days for their numbers to level out after a food change. Jill has encountered this with Alex. I'd also point out that you dropped the dose within a few days of switching food. It may be that what you're seeing is the response to the smaller dose of insulin.

Happy to have just made this more complicated for you!!

Re: 5/26 Trixie AMPS 134 +2 167 +4 114 +6.75 163!! PMPS 141

She managed to dodge a yellow PMPS...a little double-dip action, I suppose. Either that, or something was off with that 6.75 test...I tell ya, though, that one had me scared!

I was thinking the same things, Sienne...that it may take a few cycles to determine whether the issue is with the dose or with the food. We'll see what happens over the next few days after the food switch, and go from there. This well definitely be an interesting little experiment.

The bummer is, she''ll eat the BG, but doesn't love it like the Wellness. Same with the EVO 95%. And my Civvies REALLY aren't fans of the BG the way they are of the Wellness. Once things settle, I may have to do a little food shopping around again...

Re: 5/26 Trixie AMPS 134 +2 167 +4 114 +6.75 163 PMPS 141 +2

Still got the spike action going on, but I know that if the food IS the problem, it may take a few cycles to clear. We'll see what the next day or so brings us and go from there.

I was at work for din-din, but apparently (and no big surprise), she was not thrilled with the BG switcharoo. She did, however, have a some EVO with a little less disdain.

Re: 5/26 Trixie AMPS 134 +2 167 +4 114 +6.75 163 PMPS 141 +2

Gracie eats the WN 4% foods (turkey, chicken, beef/chicken) consistently. You can tell from her SS that she doesn't spike very often....her spikes at +2 are more related to whether she is going to do anything that cycle or not. I was feeding her BG beef (1%) as a +5 snack...for quite a long time...and out of nowhere it started causing her numbers to go up so now she just gets boiled chicken for her snack.

What WN are you feeding? Some of them are 6% (chick/her, turkey/salmon, beef/salmon), some 8% (salmon and trout I believe) and some 11% (chicken/lobster).

Good luck!!! It will be interesting to see what you find out.

Re: 5/26 Trixie AMPS 134 +2 167 +4 114 +6.75 163 PMPS 141 +2

We were feeding Wellness Chicken...she had been eating it for years, even before the diabetes diagnosis. But then we had BarfFest early this month; both Frankie and Trixie were sick, and they're the only two (out of six) that were eating Wellness. So, I completely pulled it and switched to BG with the occasional EVO. Suddenly, Trixie's numbers started looking great, and she was earning reductions. But, she was not loving the BG (or the EVO, really) - especially lately, so I decided to give Wellness a try, in hopes that the barf incident was far enough in the past. I picked up a few cans the other night; both Trixie and Frankie were thrilled! However, the very next day, food spikes started again.

As Sienne pointed out, Trix did have a reduction several days before the Wellness switch, so right now we're not 100% sure what is causing these yucky numbers. My first attempt to see what's going on is removing the Wellness, and if that doesn't do it then we'll think about dosage.

Of course, one other possibility is her insulin itself; it is over 2 months old. So I'm going to refill her script on Saturday, when I'm at Target. Like I said in Julie's condo the other day, I sure wish there is a way to know for sure if the insulin has gone bad or not...very frustrating to play this little guessing game.

So...we're in a watch-n-see holding pattern. IMO, the order we should do things is to try the food thing, then see if new insulin fixes the issue. If not, then obviously we're looking at a failed reduction.

Fun, fun, fun....

Amy

...and, pretty quick turn around on that evening food spike. Very interesting indeed!

I guess we're staying up a bit longer....
