Good Morning. AMPS 391

The vet was not open yesterday. I called this morning and am waiting for them to call back to see if they are running a C&S for Whiskers UTI. Also asked if it would be appropriate to us Zymox HC instead of mometamax for her ear infection. :smile:

Good luck with the vet, Cheryl. I hope that you are feeling better, and that with Whisker's higher numbers, you've been able to get some rest!

Hello,

Our veterinary office just called and our vet has been off since we saw him on Thursday. I spoke with one of the other vets on duty. She said they did do a sterile needle extraction for the UTI, but did a UA not a C&S. The bacteria appeared to be cocci, but can't say for certain since a C&S was not done. She said they typically do not due the C&S for Diabetics since they are so prone to UTI's. She said they could do the C&S after the course of antibiotics is done, since I now have concerns about AB resistant infection/bacteria because she has had 3 UTI's in the last couple months. She said if she does have an AB resistant infection/bacteria in would still show up on the C&S :shock: (& cost more money than if they had just done it in the begining, but since I did not specifically request it they opted for the UA, due do lower cost).

I told her I am not comfortable using the mometamax for the ear infection, becuase of it's potential side effects. She said she will research the Zymox HC, but doesn't think she will recommend it since it is not one they use. (I have already ordered it from amazon). She want's to use a 3rd one just for yeast infections of the ear (which is what Whiskers has), she will call me back before the end of the night. :shock:

Hello,

The Vets office has called back and the vet on duty has recommended Conofite for the ear infection. CONOFITE (miconazole nitrate) Cream is a synthetic antifungal agent for use on dogs and cats. Each gram contains 23 mg of miconazole nitrate (equivalent to 20 mg miconazole base) in a base containing: cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, butylated hydroxytoluene, white petrolatum, mineral oil, polyoxyl 40 stearate, butylparaben and purified water.
I have already paid for the other two medications. I just don't know what to do. I do have to be mindful of costs, it's just insane.

I think I have posted in previous condo that mometamax can in rare cases cause deafness. I do not declaw our cats, but Whiskers came to us declawed. There is feline rivalry (alph cat) at our house, and our two black cats pick on her (Timmy our Maine coon protects her and is her pal), I recently found a couple blood drops on her face, where one of the others clearly clawed her. If she goes deaf she will be totally defenseless. Maybe I worry, but I just can't do that. :cry:

Oh Cheryl, I am sorry for all you are going through with your vet. I understand about the kitties fighting. Harley's siblings are declawed but have teeth and do pick on him but he holds his own.

Have you tried Rescue Remedy by Bach. It is an all natural liquid that you rub on kitties ears. My vet suggested it when I got Laura and it was holy he-- in my house. I rubbed it on her ear (and Scooter) once a day and I feel it calmed them down. Maybe it would help on the one that is attacking Whiskers. I have some if you want to try it (ask others about it).

Hi Patti,

How are you Guys? Yes I would like to try the rescue remedy by bach, I have seen it at the co-ops in town. Thanks for the suggestion. (I have feliway spray, didn't seem to have much effect. Someone mentioned the defusers, but I have not tried that).

If you didn't open the Mometamax, why can't you return it?

So here's my thinking. Your cat has had 3 UTIs. Each time, they did a UA, not a C & S. If they did the C & S the first time, there's a reasonable chance that you would not have had to deal with 2 other UTIs because there is the possibility you've not been prescribed the appropriate antibiotic. That would have been way cheaper in the long run. I doubt that the vet will do a C & S for free but it might be something to discuss.

I wish I could return the Mometamax, but they clearly mark the med box no returns on Medication :oops: . I also asked and they said no. Our regular vet is calling us tomorrow, I'll ask him. I'll ask if they would cover the cost of C&S. You never know. Thank you

Cheryl...one thing I would add to Sienne's comment is I don't believe it will work to have a C&S done after she's been on ABs. They should have done one from the onset of the first UTI like Sienne said but once Whiskers has been on ABs, a C&S might not show anything. So sorry about the ear problems...I have not had any cats with ear problems so can't make a recommendation there. On the Bach Flower Rescue Remedy, if you have a Whole Foods store, see if you can get it there. Bach makes one just for animals that is alcohol free which is better for your kitty than those suspended in alcohol. I've used the diffusers and they've worked well for us. Good luck!

Hi Cheryl, I don't have anything to add to what the others have said, but just wanted to wish you good luck in dealing with your vet and your other cats. You made a good decision not to give the Momentamax. Perhaps when you explain it to your regular vet, he'll make an exception and accept the unopened package for return.
I hope that everything will work out for you and Whiskers.

I will look for the non-alcohol bach rescue remedy just for animals. Thank you. We do have whole foods here. Maybe I will also try the feliway defuser since it is a constant output, might help.

I'm hoping when I talk to the vet and explain, he may make an exception since the package is unopened.

hi, cheryl...i saw your post about bad behavior and rushed to read it thinking it might have something to do with binks and I..
.we have the reputation for misbehaving around here :lol:

seriously though...i feel for you and whiskers on the "fitting in" issue...love the fact that you have a cat who protects her.
i've ordered the rescue remedy...was going to try feliway but thought the cost might be better with the other.

can't offer much but humor and sincere hopes for good resolutions to all you have going on...
and the thought that if your vet has any sense of decency and good service...they should help you out.

You are so funny. Where did you order the rescue remedy, whole foods is a bit of a drive here. Unless Patti really want's to let me try hers (so thoughtful o:-) )

Cheryl, you may certainly try my rescue remedy. It expires January 2012 so it is still good. I need to go buy more raw over the weekend (if they are open). Want to meet there?
