Re: 11/5 Mowgli AMPS 373

I know morning numbers tend to be higher for most kitties .. maybe that is why? At any rate, he isn't alone .. mochas on the pink floor too .. I hope they both come down today ... have a great weekend!

Re: 11/5 Mowgli AMPS 373

still feeling uber bad about the bruising i have done to his poor ears...i know that in time I will get better with it...and ideally NOT bruise it.... not to mention I will start to poke in the RIGHT PLACE FIRST... and hopefully he won't always hate the procedure when he is feeling up....(when down he let me poke away) by continuing to poke am i continuing to bruise? i know, such a trivial concern when it is all for "the greater good"... (quote :shaun of the dead) ~sigh~ and now he trys the head shake after the poke.... i am going to try the pill container with warm water in it tonite...rice sock isn't working for me....he wants to eat it... lmao

Re: 11/5 Mowgli AMPS 373

I am wondering if he is going lower after those blues he gets at night...like the other day when you recorded the greens.
What arrangement do you have for snacks at night? A timed feeder? Some use pucks of food that are left out to defrost during the cycle so food will be available. (I am the timed feeder in my house, setting my alarm at 3am every night so I can get up, do some tests, and then give a snack. but that's just me, I am retired and can manage that)
People have found that a snack at +8/+9 in the cycle gives the pancreas some nice action by the time preshot rolls around.
Hang in there...doing great!

Re: 11/5 Mowgli AMPS 373

Keri, are you using a tissue or something to apply a little pressure after you poke? I use a cotton round behind the ear when I poke, then fold it over the ear and apply medium pressure for about 5 seconds after I sip the the blood. Applying pressure should help prevent bruising. I think you asked about neo/polysporin? That helps the ears heal. You can use the kind with pain relief or without. It will get better as your technique improves with practice.

As Pat said, Mowgli could be seeing greens in the middle of the cycle, and bouncing from it. He also could need more insulin, but it's hard to say without some nadir checks. What is your schedule like? If you are home today, getting some tests in the middle of the cycle could help figure out what is going on. I set my alarm at night if I think Tinkles is going to go low so I can check him and make sure he eats a snack, I do use a timed feeder but he tends to sleep through it at night! ohmygod_smile

You can look at other people's SS to get some ideas about timing snacks. Many of us feed a small snack around +8/+9 to help bring down the PS#s, as Pat said.

Re: 11/5 Mowgli AMPS 373

I leave a frozen puck during the day, and generally I haven't left anything out after 1030pm yet.. so I can also leave a puck out at night too?? at least half a puck maybe? so i admit the badness, i haven't left out a night snack
I am looking to get a timed feeder..
i think that is going to have to be an option..
I am working today... i will be home tonite, so check a few times, and then I work tomorrow night from 3-11pm (the part time gig) so I will try and get a reading when I get home from work tomorrow night at midnite...it will be his +6 i figure.. it might be easier to check him thru the day before i head to work too..... hmmm.... think think think think.....or if he lets me, i can do a good curve tonite until tomorrow morning, hmmm still think think think think......
and i really do have to figure out a snack schedule

as for his ear, i use a tissue and apply pressure after the poke..which now he hates the pressure too... i think the big thing is doing it right, and in the right place! in the meantime, feeling brutally bad about what i have done to him....le sigh again

Re: 11/5 Mowgli AMPS 373

P.S
I REALLY need to do another good monitor, i think what you two are saying makes total sense, he could be dropping down at night, and I am just not catching it, then the kick in...
I admit that I have been really worried bout the ears..probably the reason i have not been an uber good girl  ..and am leary to try the paw pad..... Totally going to try the pill container with warm water on ear...
those snacks i bought wouldn't make any effect right?? (referenced on yesterdays condo) they do have some carbs...if those could be impacting I can go buy the chicken ones at lunchbreak today....
So....
If i do tonite, I can go every two or three hours till his morning....
i will do tonite..... i just neeeeeeeeeeeeeeed him to work with me...........and meeeeee to be bettter at this......... i was sooooo good at it at the beginning with doing the pricks. what irony....... :YMSIGH:
and now :-Q

Also, can someone direct me to how to check ketones? I figure I should start to get that underway too.I know its his urine, bout how to you know, check it in the litter? ... i was relooking at his lab results, and despite what the vet told me (shocking i know) it says trace amounts of ketones..
as with most newbies not sure how to read the numbers exactly...

No worries on the ears....Curry's got some nice red marks too. I do know that if her ear is at all cool or cold....I won't get any blood...I had to poke her about 4 x this morning....She replied with a "grrrrrrrr"......but.....I GOT BLOOD!.

Good luck w/the ear poking......

Awww so I am not the only one who gets the "grrrrrrrr" it's probably not the nicest thing, but I do take some comfort in that lol

Re: 11/5 Mowgli AMPS 373

You can leave frozen pucks out at night too, that's fine! I try to do the same schedule day and night for feeding...not always successful, but I try. I don't use the FD liver snacks, just the FD chicken ones, but usually if they say 100% meat, they should be ok...maybe someone else knows more about them? I think the ear poking will get easier with time and practice, and treats of course! You're doing great, keep up the good work.

Ketones....do you have the strips? You can get them at any pharmacy, they may be behind the pharmacy counter if they aren't out on the shelf, so ask if you don't see them. You can do it a few different ways...if he will let you stick the strip in his urine stream while he's peeing, that's the easy way. If not, you can put a piece of saran wrap over the part of the LB where he pees, just tuck the edges into the litter so the urine will form a puddle on it. You can test right from the litter right after he goes if you make sure the litter won't affect the test...take a bit of clean litter, mix with some water and stick the strip in...if it is negative, then it's ok to test from the litter. Or take a clean LB and put clean aquarium gravel in it for litter...it won't react and you can test from that. I would try to get that done ASAP if he had a trace at the vet...it's important to know if he has ketones.

Curves or mini-curves are great when you can do them. However, it's important to get some spot checks every day. We ask that you try to get at least the preshot tests and one spot check per cycle. Naturally, more data is better, so any further testing you can do is great! (I'm a testaholic, so you can't judge by me!) The nadir checks are particularly helpful because we adjust dose by nadir.

Re: 11/5 Mowgli AMPS 373

Thank you for the continuing support!
I will ALWAYS to the PS tests, no question there, and I definetly have been doing at least one or two spot tests.... As I do understand the importance of the levels and when they occur..And really I won't know if he ALWAYS hits his Nadir at a certain time unless I keep doing a few +6 checks a week at least i figure eh?
I will continue to keep on it!
And hopefully things will get better as soon as he realizes, I am not quitting! lol
Excellent for the ketone tips, way less complicated than i thought lol...i don't think he will let me stick it under while he pees, that would just be me imposing on him again, lol how often are ketones checked, like once a week if all good?

Re: 11/5 Mowgli PMPS 355

so frustrated........
people always ask me, "what are you stressed about the injections?" ---thats the LEAST of my worries!----
i tried NOT to be anxious about the pokes tonite, but as soon as I do one clearly in the ear poke and no blood comes out, I start to stress...and now he has started the freaking head whip.. which is lovely when I do get that drop, and then the ERROR code, so to quickly get another strip before the blood stops or soaks.....not to mention I am pretty sure i look like I am ready for halloween....
i think I am going to have a drink to try and relax a bit......maybe that will help when I test him.....
~sigh~
suggestions,
the +2 or +3 holy terror poke?

also, i am stressed cause I do not know who is eatting the pucks i leave out, him or my other two.... and I don't know if getting a timed feeder is going to help this issue of WHO is eatting it...

.....

Ps tried the warm water in pill container.....

Re: 11/5 Mowgli PMPS 355

Giving some chicken treats(like pure bites or halo chicken livalittles) while you are tesing really helps a lot & wont affect the BGs & will distract him also..Rubbing or massaging the ear brings the blood up to the surface too. They begin to associate the pokes with the treats & the shots & that's how they get used to it..Just becomes part of your day--You will do it, just be patient--Look how much you have accomplished already!!

Re: 11/5 Mowgli PMPS 355

Mowgli - Iz you commin to my paw-ty? Chef Mannie makes da bestest fuds! - Muffin

Keri - I don't know what position you put Mowgli in to do the tests, but I'll tell what I do that stopped the head shake. I sit on the floor with my legs out in a V and put Muffin in the middle facing away from me. In the beginning I would put my feet together in front of her so she got the message that she was not free to go. I'm left handed, so I generally test her left ear. I put my right hand on top of her head and hold her left ear, then poke with my left hand, still holding her ear with my right hand rested on top of her head. As long as my hand is on her head, she won't move. If I held her ear without resting my hand on her head, she would shake her head, too. Hope it gets easier and becomes more routine quickly for you two.

And, like Roni said, I give loveys and rubs after she's in position, before the pokeys and that would relax her a little too. And me as well. If you get frustrated, it's best to stop and take a deep breath, get in some more rubs and then try again.

Re: 11/5 Mowgli PMPS 355

I test on the kitchen counter. I keep a Vulcan death grip on Gabby's ear once I've poked. If Mowgli tends to try to shake her head, you can always scrape the blood onto your fingernail and test from that drop of blood.

Re: 11/5 Mowgli PMPS 355 +3 310

So, he ate really good at supper time, so at 630...he had another snack at 730 an a wee bit more like maybe a teaspoon and a bit around 8...hasn't eatten anything since then.... i am wondering if these treats are too high carb.. it is all natural, but still it is beef liver..the after poke treats..
anyways..
pouring my second glass...
we lucked out on the second poke btw.. if not the vein right next to it.... and he could care less bout treats OR cuddles

maybe eliminate the treat.....

Re: 11/5 Mowgli PMPS 355 +3 310

If you're worried about the liver treats, try some FD chicken treats instead. I use boiled chicken breast cut into bite sized pieces for testing treats....cook a few breasts, cut them up and freeze them in small portions, pull out one portion at a time...works great for us!

I would test for ketones weekly UNLESS he shows any ketones...then test at least daily. Kittys who have a history of ketones need to be watched for them more closely. Ketones are nothing to fool around with...if you see even a trace, mix extra water into the wet food and check with the vet. Hopefully others with experience will chime in here...I have no experience with ketones.

Yes, you can put a puck out tonight if you want to. I've got to get some sleep, I will check Mowgli's numbers in the morning. You're doing great, Keri! Have a good night!
