First off, here's yesterday's condo

Then to confirm: Making a dosecrease today - starting this AM, we went up by 0.25u (from 2.5 to 2.75) - let's just hope that Sooty's liver notices!!

Meter Q answered - we're good, thanks for your replies!

Sooty is funny this morning, we had hidden a bag of dry food (kitty crack!) out in the garage a few weeks ago, until we could get rid of it (which we did!), but he knew it was out there (smelly stuff!) and would sneak in there and try and get the bag open - it's been gone for a couple of weeks now but he's still looking for it - and right now he's 'on guard' at the door from the house to the garage, stretched out full length at the threshold - I guess he thinks / hopes if he keeps on the lookout, it might just reappear, any time soon...! Yikes that stuff must be sooooo addictive.... !! (thanks a bunch, Purina!)

Good luck with the new dose and I use the same meter you have and so far have not noticed any problems with the new strips they changed about a month ago for where I order them from maybe 2 months but I go thru a lot of strips. Yes they do read faster that was the only change I noticed similar in speed to the alphatrak which I also have.

I get very different readings from Tinkles' ears....one reads higher than the other. I don't think that is unusual, I've seen others comment on the same thing....and yes, it can be 30 pts difference! I only use one ear now, so my results are consistent.

There is an inherent amount of variance with any test. Generally, if you get one test immediately after another or even have enough blood for 2 tests from the same drop, you could see 10 - 20% variance from test to test. It doesn't matter how precise your instrument is, there's always some amount of measurement "error." A 303 vs. a 338 is pretty much the same number.

I was just a bit concerned as we haven't seen a reading that high for quite a while now...
I called the Abbott helpline they thought my BG was a bit high & I should see my Dr (!) but the only thing they thought might be a factor was possibly getting a bit of Neosporin into the test strip. They're sending me a bottle of the Control Solution so we can do a confidence test but they didn;t think there was anything else to worry about. (Like any of us needs anything ELSE!!)

I am betting you could spend tons of money on strips, testing this meter and that one, comparing to see which gives you what.
You could use one meter and test 20 times in a row and I would bet you get lots of different numbers. Like has been said, you are going to have the variances, so here's how I see it.

I need to keep my 2 above 100 if possible, so I wanted a meter that seemed to be consistently lower in results. I know that some meters go wacky in very high or very low numbers, but I am sure the others can tell you more about that. To me, high is high, so watch for ketones, and bring the number down if you can.
So, when I got a low-ish number, I would test with a few meters and record. At lower numbers, I found that Bayer Contour always gave me the lowest numbers, so that is my main meter. I also use OneTouch, but keep in mind that a low on the OTU may be lower on the Bayer.

I use just one meter consistently. Sometimes I use the others, like now, I ran out of Bayer strips (oops) so I am using the OTU meter. If I get a number that makes me go huh? I test again. If I still doubt, I test with a diff meter.

You may well get a number that's way out there for some reason, so just double check and record the both. You can always test again in 30min and see if things are back to where you expect them to be as well.

There's always going to be some weeble wobbles in the numbers, so long as they wobble in the right direction.

Just when you think you're getting the hang of all this, something happens to remind you that you're still VERY new at it and you darn well had better be able to listen to good advice! So OK, "we live and learn" (hopefully!) and am the wiser for this. Cheers!

I am shaking my head here over the bag of dry food and Sooty's preoccupation with it. It is scary how addictive that stuff is.
Good luck with the increased insulin. sigh and once again, I am asking for some blues Sooty....PULEEEESE give us some blues ....I have faith that yu will, just when is the quetion!

(Raja is my carbo addict here....they actually serve W/D canned AND W/D dry at all times when she was at the vet's for a 3 day curve last Aug!!! :o That was last year when they were fist dx. I was not on the board at that time. I had gotten rid of the dry the previous Feb and asked them to NOT give her dry. I did a cold turkey with throwing out the dry that Feb and she was used to wet.) Well, they gave me a bag of that stuff to bring home, saying that diabetics must have food available to them at all times. I knew nothing back then, so I fell for it. I was horrified when Raja came flying into the kitchen as I poured some of it in the bowl. She would have killed to get to that bowl!!! The familiar sound of the dry nuggets falling into the bowl just brought back all the old memories of free feeding the dry to her! Yeah I picked up that bowl and got a grip of myself!! I got rid of that bag right after and she has not seen dry food again. It is very very addictive for them. Yeah thanks a bunch Purina!!! grr_red

Oh boy to hear you say "free feeding the dry" - Yes us too. I don't know about you but I'm convinced that that's what caused Sooty's diabetes in the first place and probably thousands and thousands of other cats (& dogs) around the world. I wish I'd known then what we know now - but you have to think, the multi-$Billions Pet Food "Industry" has a lot to answer for - but so far, they seem to be getting away with it scot free (not unlike the tobacco industry story, if you think about it!) They HAVE to know whats happening surely!?? When we're beginning to have a 'Cat Diabetes' Industry too, that must be taking $M of our money on all the testing supplies and meds!
Grrrr indeed!! grr_red Still, as long as their shareholder are happy, huh?
But one day, this has got to come back right to their door, when enough people realize that their wonderful "complete nutrition, wholesome" products are full of crap that is not only unneccessary but downlright harmful and is making 100s of thousands of animals very (very) sick or worse. I really do wonder how many pet deaths they're responsible for so far? (apart from the ones they've already admitted / been forced to admit?)

I totally agree! My first vet back on the Cape told me that Shadow's teeth and the plaque buildup meant that he needed to have dry food to keep his teeth clean! What a crock! Shadow loved the canned even back when he was younger.
She said I had to FORCE him to eat the dry. So, dummy me, I gave them a can in the morning, split between them and again at night and left the Hill Science Diet out all day long!! Raja would move from her bowl when Shadow would put his nose in her wet food and go over to the dry, leaving him with both bowls of the canned. But he would eat the dry during the day too. Oh, I wish I knew then what I know now too!

The dry is convenient for people too....some don't like the fuss and bother with the canned. And even the canned foods that are available...have you really looked at some of the labels? The HC stuff that is being sold is shocking. If it weren't for the Binky's chart, who would know the carb content of some of those foods!! I am just thankful that now I know at least...a little late, but it's better late than never...

I think the bottom line - $$ - for pet food companies has nothing to do with pet health, all advertising to the contrary. When I got here and found Janet and Binky's chart, I was gobsmacked at how many calories in the dry food. For Shadow's weight and daily requirements, she needed 1/8 cup of dry food a day. THat's a coffee scoop! Yet the package said 1 cup daily per cat. It's a wonder I don't have a houseful of FDs. Like you, I firmly believe dry food is what got Shadow in this fix. well, let me rephrase - the love of dry food is what got us here. but I had always given FF as a treat so the transition was pretty smooth. I have one civvie that occ. does a hunger strike and I have gone so far as to buy him a small bag of dry EVO, but I've never opened it and hope I won't ever have to.

People say around here all the time - sometimes you gotta to go up to go down, so here's hoping you and Sooty head down the next few days. good luck with your dosecrease.

Me too, (gobsmacked I mean!) it was a heck of an eye-opener, especially looking at the so-called "Science Diet" etc! Too many Carbs for me, never mind a cat, for goodness sake!

Me too, (gobsmacked I mean!) it was a heck of an eye-opener, especially looking at the so-called "Science Diet" etc! Too many Carbs for me, never mind a cat, for goodness sake!
I should add, Sooty took transitioning to FF & Friskies wet food in his stride, but he was sooooo hungry all the time, I think he'd have eaten sawdust, if we'd put it in front of him! LOL

SS is up to date...

WCR: all Ps in place (except playing - Sooty is far too dignified for that today).

He had a nice bit of filet mignon for dinner tonite (Cathy can never resist cutting him up a lil bit of the pink part of her steak, for a treat... it's a wonder he'll eat anything else when you think about it!)

He is still acting VERY hungry much of the time... does this go away, or get worse, as their numbers come down?

It should subside. Shadow was ravenously hungry when we first started. Trying to grab food from our dinner plates...never had enough to eat...it was terrible. Basically, they cannot utilize the nutrients from the food unless they have the insulin onboard. So they are basically starving. It takes a little time before they start using the food properly. I noticed a return to a more normal appetite with Shadow and he began gaining weight again. Hope you will experience the same with Sooty soon.

Yep, he does that still with us. Just finished his dish of food but the minute we try to eat, or prep dinner, he jumps up and he's in there, trying to get the food off our plates. While we're eating he sidles up and reaches out with a paw onto one of our plates - and thinks we can't see him doing it. Funny really - as he thinks he's outwitting us! - but sad too, since it must be really awful to be that hungry all the time....
