9/14 Alex's 1 Year Diabetes DX Annifursary-AMPS HI

In Alex style, He is celebrating is annifursary of the day he was diagnosed with diabetes with a HI AMPS, which is not any different from any other day  However, he also smells like acetone, his appetite isn't quite up to par and he has an upset digestive track which makes today a little more bittersweet than I was hoping for it to be because I was planning on giving him Bumble Bee or Sardines or any one of his favorite treats and he just isn't so hungry today. He's on Flagyl though...maybe this will turn around. The day is young! :?

If anyone reads my profile, the day that I found out about Alex having diabetes was a scary day for me. He was so so sick(as many of our kitties were at dx time)and I was guilt ridden for a long time because i thought for sure that it was my fault...if I had only known that the awful smell coming from him was ketones and not the bug spray I thought he got into...I would have gotten him to the vet three weeks sooner instead of shampooing him over and over and over. Until he literally fell down in front of me with a look on his face that said "Mommy, I'm sick" (which he didn't have for the first two weeks..he just smelled awful). Maybe his neuropathy would have been reversible? Woulda, coulda, shoulda? What did I know? Also, I was sure he was going to die. My first cat ever..a long time ago, had diabetes and heart disease and it took them forever to diagnose both of these things. By the time I found a vet who actually took blood tests and xrays, he said that with both of these diseases there was nothing that could be done and he had to be put down the next day. I was heartbroken. My poor Sparky was only 9. When I heard Alex had diabetes, and he already had hyper-t and a heart murmur I was sick. I was going to lose him and I was sick. My vet thought I was nuts and who told you they can't be treated together? Well veterinary medicine has changed a LOT since 1980 :-D

On September 23rd (Bruce Springsteen's Birthday), frustrated and sick and sad...I found FDMB and had found someplace to tell Alex's story. I felt that there was something amiss in the way he was being treated. I needed more control over my boy's illness...and boy did I come to the right place. In less than 24 hours I was on the phone with Hillary and had already started home testing! By the 13th of October my vet agreed to get onboard with Lantus (Alex was on horrible Vetsulin)if I could get some and I found a wonderful girl in NJ who gave me my first vial to try. And the rest is history.

Alex is far from being regulated but he is a multiple problem kitty and he is still a happy boy who feels good most of the time...because of the wonderful people here. I know I was difficult at times but never because i meant to be...mostly out of fear and because when you can't see a person's face, things often get lost in electronic correspondence. To those I ever pissed off, I apologize. Hillary and Carolyn, you have been my rocks. I would have truly gone berserk without you. Libby, Jill, Cassandra, Bonnie, Venita, Sienne, Joan, Monique and so many others whose names are escaping me now I owe you so much for all of your help that I could never express the gratitude i feel in words...but I love you all. You are my family. You have given us hope where there was none; guidance when I couldn't see. You were there when I felt alone. I want to share our annifursary with all of you on the FDMB. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for getting us through this year ♥♥♥

Thank you to my Jackson for your never ending patience and being on the back burner way too often. Jackson is sick also btw and is going to get lots of TLC today. cat_pet_icon

Thanks to Rebecca for giving us this venue without which we would all be a hot mess

And last, but not least...

Alex, you are my heart and my soul. I have learned more about you this year than in the 12 years that came before. You are a real trooper and a true fighter and sport. I love you more than you could ever know. You are my hero ♥

I hope you all have a great day today..kitties and beans!!!!

Thanks for reading this!

Bittersweet happy annifursary.
I have tears in my eyes reading your story, again.
You are a truly devoted mother to both Alex and Jackson and many of us
have played the "shoulda, coulda, woulda" game.

I felt the same way when I found out Max had diabetese and look how high
our dose went before he cracked.

Thank goodness we had found FDMB and the wonderful fanily we have here.
Even though Max is OTJ and I have been MIA, my heart is always with everyone her.
((hugs))

party_cat HAPPY ANNIVERSARY ALEX!!!

that was lovely Caryl...and yes, it is a Happy day because you are here and you have the tools to help Alex....
And to quote what YOU wrote to use on Aug 5th for Shadow's one year anniversary:

Time flies when you're having fun, doesn't it?

I don't know if this is a congratulatory occasion but I guess in a way it is.... Shadow Alex is happy and healthy and much better off than he would be if his Mom hadn't found FDMB, so even if he's still on insulin, at least he's got lots of beans looking after him and a mama bean who loves him a whole lot.

Happy One Year On Insulin Shadow!

Lots of Love ♥

gosh, caryl, i can't believe a whole year has gone by already!
yep, today is bittersweet in many ways, but alex is alive and happy. what more could a person ask for... well, besides winning the lottery!
i'm so glad you found us and became, along with alex and jackson, part of our little community!

caryl, alex isn't the only fighter, trooper and sport... your devotion to your little guys is second to none!
have a great day!!!

(((hugs)))

Caryl, that was absolutely lovely. happy anniversary to you and Alex, and may you celebrate many, many more together

Celi & Binks

Thanks everyone. And Alex thanks you.
I am a little worried about Alex. His stools have been mushy for like 4 days now and he has been on Flagyl for 2 1/2 days and it seemed to be getting better but now it doesn't seem to be and he really had no appetite. He'll eat from my hand but only so much and then walks away. And he seems to be nauseous. He's had fluids once today. This is what doc told me to do so far.
The only new thing in diet was glucosamine and vet told me to stop it for now just to see if it could be responsible and i could always restart it...but it seems to be more of an infection thing because of his breath...as his last test was 73 which isn't really a bg that would cause ketones... :YMSIGH:

any mushy stools suggestions? I guess his belly is bothering him?

Holy cow, he's dropped from HI to 62 in 6 hours?!? He really does have a pogo stick under all that fur, doesn't he? ;-)

Very sweet report Caryl! He's lucky to have you as his bean!

I don't have any suggestions for the stool issue...normally I'd say rice, but we all know that's not an option for anyone here. Are you still giving him culturelle? Maybe his bacteria balance is off? Or what about some plain yogurt?

HAPPY 1 year ANNIFURSARY CARYL AND ALEX!!! party_cat party_cat

i REMEMBER WHEN YOU CAME HERE, THE SADNESS, THE DISBELIEF, THE IMPOSSIBILITY OF IT ALL--BUT--
You fought, and you questioned, you tried different things, then you finally believed, that having a well cat is the most important thing.
And Alex became better..OK so he's not perfect, but he is so much better--THAT's Because of You!!
Moonie still has neuropathy, maybe my fault, maybe not, but she can jump where she wants, gets around fine, and still goes where she feels like.
You worked hard & got your baby back--I think you are courageous, strong and a great fighter--
Thanks for sharing your story with everyone--It is quite a love story!--Big HUGS on your first anniversary!!

Happy Annifursary to one of the bounciest boys I know! You do such a terrific job with your boys, Caryl. I hope they feel better soon.

Nice condo here.
We are glad you are here with your kitties.
It's been a rough road so far and I wish nothing but the best outcomes for Alex and Jackson.
Give them hugs from me, Luna and Bast.

((((Caryl))))no med advice, but I hope it passes soon.
Any chance you could cross post the stool Q in the health forum? There may be suggestions there.

Happy Anniversary!!!

I always say that this IS a happy anniversary. On the day Alex was diagnosed, you probably thought he wouldn't still be here in a year. But look at him now! Not only he is here, but he is doing great. Ok, maybe he has a tummyache, but he's here and he's perfect. That is definitely something to celebrate.

Bittersweet happy annifursary!
We don't always pick the road we have to drive on, but we have to make the best of it and learn something everyday... and a year later... wow!
(((Caryl)))

May I suggest fortiflora for the tummy issues?

Happy Anniversary to you and Alex (and of course, Jackson, who also deserves to partake in the celebration). It's been a year of learning - some easy and some hard. Enjoy the day and the years to come.

Thank you, Jill! This means a lot coming from you and considering my 'rocky' start here...
( I was sooo misunderstood) lol

It's easy to be devoted to Alex and Jackson...They make my life so special (oh my goodness, my eyes just filled up)

This is true...It's not the road we would have chosen but what we've seen this year has been invaluable, the people we've met are our family, and the lessons ...unforgettable.
And the love we have seen .....priceless...and you have played a huge part in this♥

Thank you Helene for reminding me of this!

xoxox

Thanks for the 'tummy' suggestion too (another example of what we learn)

For so much that you have done for Alex this past year and for how you continue to look after him.
I always know that you'll be there....that is such a comfort.
There are no words other than..THANK YOU ♥

Oh (((((Ronnie)))))

Always there to help! I wouldn't call Alex's road rough..it's 'Alex's road'..it's different. ;-) Maybe a little rough.
But he handles it with such grace..it doesn't seem 'rough', as much as I whine sometimes.
And Jackson has the patience of a saint kitty..
They will get big huggies from you, Looney and Bast at bedtime.

They both had big snackuses a while ago so.....(unjinx unjinx)

we loves you ..thank you for all you do for us and for being there!

As it turns out he did pretty well today...I don't know what's under his fur but I wouldn't have him any other way.

Thank you for watching out for us ...faithfully ♥

I am late to the party. I can't add anything to the wisdom above, except to add more hugs. It really doesn't seem like a year. My, how time flies when one doesn't get to sleep!

If it makes your three weeks any less guilt-inducing, I misdosed Kitty for four months (following vet instructions). And yet here we are, with our kitties beside us, through the force that is FDMB!

You are such a fighter. Those are two lucky kitties you have there.

(And I have no doubt that Bruce led you here. I have no idea how. I just know that it is so. )

Awww Kathy and Kitty..I knew you'd make it here...
I guess we all made mistakes along the way and I have no doubt that you are right....about Bruce
Because every time that I lost faith in what was going on with Alex before I found the boards
and even now, I'm sure it wouldn't surprise you to know that the words that go through my head are :
"Blow away the dreams that tear you apart
Blow away the dreams that break your heart
Blow away the lies that leave you nothing but lost and brokenhearted"

Faith will be rewarded!

Hugs to you and Kitty.
Thank you for being my faithful friend and "Soul Sistah"

We're a day late to the "Annifursary " but just want to say that as I've watched your highs and lows over the past year - I have marveled at your tenaciousness. You know that our cats choose us for a reason! Thanks to everyone here - we do have a place we can vent, and cry, and laugh, and alway find help and support.
Hang in there and hope Alex is feeling a better today.
