Really a rough night with Harley. Missed a few tests when I finally slept. Have been using both main meter and the back up. I need to pretend that this 12 hour period did not happen.

198 PMPS
431 +3
412 +4
460 +6
490 +7
465 +9

The back up meter is giving me lower numbers, but still in the 400’s. Don’t know what is going on. Could it really be the meters? Will go buy a new one today, but can only afford the Walmart one again.

Time to test again.
Pattie

Re: 8/15--Harley AMPS 314

This is the update:

465 +9
367 +10
347 +11
314 AMPS

The numbers from earlier cannot possibly be right - can they? I will continue to do hourly checks for a bit.

Re: 8/15--Harley AMPS 314

I use the Reli-On Micro...strips are reasonably priced...
You did give Humilin R last night too, right?
No chance that he got into contraband food?
Wondering if he is bouncing from those lovely blues he had...will wait for someone else to weigh in here, but
those reds are not a very welcome sight. Did you manage a ketone test yet (in your spare time, she says humorously)
It looks as if he is on his way down though, so that is a good thing.

Re: 8/15--Harley AMPS 314

we also use the relion micro .. because we can afford the strips ... I don't have much advice about his numbers from early in the cycle, but I agree with pat .. looks like he is trying to come down which is always good!

Re: 8/15--Harley AMPS 314

I only gave the regular insulin this AM at 2:30. All those reds concerned me and I thought it would help to bring them done soon.

+1 328 - breakfast kicking in

Do you think I really need to go buy a new Relion? This would be my 3rd one. It has a new battery and I hate to spend $$ if I don't have to.

I thought about the contraband food, but all I remember is that he ate the FF appetizer stuff that I had to entice Scooter for his shot. I try (really hard) to pick up all the high carb stuff before Harley enters the room.

Re: 8/15--Harley AMPS 314

Just a quick update - Harley's bg is coming down:

AMPS 314 - breakfast was served
+1 328
+2 245

And just a side note about another post- Yeah, Beanie is home!

Re: 8/15--Harley bg falling too fast: Suggestions

Harley seems to be falling too fast (for me)

AMPS 314 - breakfast was served
+1 328
+2 245
+3 142

I don't want another rebound situation. What do I do? Feed FF, higher carb stuff. Please, I need suggestions.

Re: 8/15--Harley bg falling too fast: Suggestions

You can give a little medium carb to see if you can get Harley to surf. Mix a little gravy with his lc food......or you could give a tsp of hc.

Re: 8/15--Harley bg falling too fast: Suggestions

He is eating a little FF ocean fish but it's 0 carbs on the list. I will try Scooters gravy stuff he had for breakfast. Thanks, I don't want to see anymore red today.

Re: 8/15--Harley bg falling too fast: Suggestions

Wow, Harley! He's on a bit of a roller coaster isn't he?

You have some good advice from Miriam and Pat about slowing him down a bit. I wouldn't do HC at this point either. I would see how the LC or MC food helps him surf before taking out the big guns.

I do think those reds were from a big ol' bounce. I am very glad to see his quick return to prettier numbers.

Now SURF Harley, SURF!!

Re: 8/15--Harley bg falling too fast: Suggestions

Hey, looks like we're in the same boat this morning.....feed-test-feed-test.

Re: meter - I use the accu check aviva (and so does JoJo  ) I've had the same one for 2 years and only had to replace the battery once. I'm very happy with it and I get the strips from Amazon, they come out to about 50 cents a strip, $23.00-$25.00 for 50 strips.

Happy spot checking!

Re: 8/15--Harley bg falling too fast: Suggestions

I gave the regular at the +9 - giving it time to work and wear off before the lantus really kicked in.

Re: 8/15--Harley +4 150

Well, Harley (at +4) is 150, so I am thinking he may be going up. Hopefully leveling out. Sorry for the emergency, but I don't understand my guy - up - down - up - down. I get dizzy just looking at numbers.

I will update ss during the day.

Thanks for all the advice. I did give MC stuff - only about 1 Tbsp.

Re: 8/15--Harley bg falling too fast: Suggestions

why do you think your meter is bad? Meters do give different readings, but they are supposed to be within a 20% range. In the 400's, 20% is a lot, so it can look like the meters are off when really it's just the allowed variance. Or is there another reason?

I think 1.5u R is too much for Harley now. It dropped him 100 points in an hour at the end of the cycle, when the Lantus probably wasn't working at all anymore. That kind of drop can set him up for another big bounce. You want the R to just take the edge off, ideally it would hold the bounce flat until the Lantus can take over. It looks like you also happened to give it to him right as the bounce was clearing anyway. If you're going to give R to Harley, I think you need to give it at the *beginning* of the bounce. You might not need it anymore anyway - it looks like he is clearing his bounces in less than one cycle usually. I'm not convinced that cats who don't have a high-dose condition should be using R, but I understand that you're afraid of ketones and it's your decision.

Re: 8/15--Harley +4 150

I will be honest with all of you that this really frightens me. When Harley was first diagnosed and only on 1 unit lantus daily, he became so sick. His bg was consistently in the high 300's and 400's (a few time it would not even read on the meter). When I finally checked his ketones, the stick was black and he was soooo sick.

When I got him home (eventually), he had ketones often and that is why the vet taught me how and when to give the regular insulin. Maybe those days are over - and I need to give it up.

I think that is why I panic so easily - do not was the DKA experience again. I am so appreciative of your expertise and patience with me. But again, fear trumps logic at times.

Re: 8/15--Harley +4 150

I cn't offer advice on the insulin, just :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

You can derive yourself nuts trying to reconcile 2 meters, just stick to one. If you still feel you need a new meter consider the Maxima AST from Hocks. Go to their diabetic supplies and click on blood glucose meter-deals. The meter is free w/ 2 boxes of strips and the strips are only 33cents each! Orders over $79 ship free. I stock up on strips, lancets syringes or anything I need for myself.

Re: 8/15--Harley +4 150

I totally understand the fear of DKA, Lucy had DKA and HL and I never, ever want anybody to have to go through that. I'm lucky that for some reason she never threw ketones after that.

Things seem to be changing for Harley, so it might be worthwhile to hold off on the R. It might be setting him up for even more bouncing. Maybe the next couple of times, try no R and see what happens. If you don't like the results, you can always put it back in the next time.

What a day. Ended up having to go to work at 10am until 4:45 - I have a presentation tomorrow at one of my schools in WI. Could not do any tests and tomorrow will be the same. My neighbor will give his PM shot but does not want to learn testing. Anyone close to St. Louis Park?

Anyway, Harley ended up at 359 for PMPS. The regular insulin is WAY in the back of the frigde. Do not want another night like that one. On the bright side, NO KETONES. My boy just peed - is it weird that it is a highlight of my day? So, I am wondering..I see many people reporting low numbers but no rebound. Is Harley unusual or is it just because he is use to being in the pink.

Thanks so much for all the help today. I printed all the responses so I can review them.

Harley is not unusual, it takes most cats a long time to get to the point where they have low numbers and no rebound (except sometimes for those newly diagnosed cats who are going OTJ quickly). Check out Lucy's spreadsheet, she enjoyed her bounces for a long time. One day he will flatten out.
