8/14 Harley PMPS 198, +3 431, +7 460

Over slept this AM, so Harley is about ½ hour late in his shot. I thought that something was wrong with him because he usually is screaming for food, but he was also sleeping. I thought that the numbers were great last night. I blew it about 3 am, when I gave him just a little too much as a treat.

Still cannot update Harley’s ss. Tried to the PMPS came up as 37. I will keep trying today. His numbers are.

158 +4
183 +6.5
179 +10
379 AMPS

This AM - not one peep about food (well, maybe a little peep). Usually he is manic about getting food, he wants it now, and a lot of it. Today, I found him sleeping and had to wake him up for food. He was just fine with the amount I gave him.

SS is now updated. Computer keeps saying something about a certificate needed???

Have you tried logging out of Google and then logging back in? Sometimes you need to reset everything that way. Or even shutting dow your computer and rebooting?

Really nice cycle last night. And it's so nice to hear Harley wasn't crying for food.

Harley is hungry tonight and I am not sure that the 1/2 can FF will hold him over until +3. Good day today - he went down slowly but we are blue.

Harley was crying so I did a test - 431 at +3 - why. He did eat a few bites of FF appetizer. I looked at the wrapper and there is nothing in it to indicate grain or carbs. Could he have fallen really low between PMPS and +3 for a rebound? I really loved the blues - now I'm singing them!

I think others here feed FF appetizers, they may be able to give you the carb %, the wrapper won't really tell ya.

Sometimes bounces can be delayed. He had a good run of blues that his liver is not used to. Its great it hung on as long as it did!

Also, the steroid could be having an added affect to the numbers since you give it at pm shot.

Seems to me there is some improvement - more steady numbers, and showing some better ones too!

Should I be giving the budesonide in the AM? Would that be better for him?

The budesonide is not known to raise blood sugar AS much, or at all in some cats when compared to prednisolone. However, every cat is different and it is quite possible he is getting an overall rise and causing resistance to insulin (thus the higher dose). Its not likely to make a difference if you give it day or night, but you can experiment after talking to the vet about it. ETA: It actually could make a difference giving it in the morning, especially if you are seeing lopsided cycles. Im not sure thats the case with Harley, tho

A good thing to do would be to test +1 through +6 a few times in the evening and see if you find a definate rise and drop that may not be related to food or nadir. For the longest time Latte saw a a rise between +1 and +3, then a drop around +6. She would continue to surf from there. When I played around with the timing, it was still the same - 1-3hrs after the pred she would rise, 6hrs later she would drop.

But then again, it could be as simple as a bounce. Data collection is the key to understanding what might be going on.

Oh - I also noticed you were still having problems with your meter at times??? Any thoughts on just switching to something completely different...something you may feel more confident in? Just wondering.

I have thought about meters but the test strips are so expensive with others. I may have to check other ones out.

Carolyn is much more conversant with the effect of a steroid on numbers and how to gauge the timing.

On the other hand, Harley isn't used to blues so it's entirely possible that there's some bouncing due to having a run of blue numbers. Harley's liver panicked, dumped stored glucose into her system, and you got a bounce.
