She was mostly pinks today...maybe from the dry food I gave her last night.
Bummer. I did buy some gravy though!

Hi,
Yesterday
Bit of a weird night last night:

pmps 236 .75 u given
+2 111
+5 64, I plopped her down in front of her dish and she ate her wet food
+5.5 57, gave her some dry food (tsp, purina d/m) b/c i was afraid it would get lower
+6 76, gave another tsp of dry
+7 78
+11.5 155, I'm surprised this isn't higher given the dry food last night
+12 252 (wow that's quite the jump)

I did move up her shot time by 15 minutes last night (so instead of 8, I did 7:45) since I will have to go back to work soon. I gave her .75 u this morning since she was back up to 252. I'll do some checks.
Do you think the time made the difference? Should I not have given .75 this morning?

Re: 8/7 Savannah amps 252; 8/6 +5.5 57;question

Morning and Happy Saturday. I think you are doing just fine with moving the dose times up in 15 minute intervals...that's great.
A more experienced person will be along soon to help you with your dosing question...but I was wondering if you have ever tried the HC gravy instead of the dry to bring her numbers up a little?

Re: 8/7 Savannah amps 252; 8/6 +5.5 57;question

The 0.75 dose was fine. A newly diagnosed cat doesn't earn a decrease until you have a BG of less than 50.

What you saw with the dry is the reason we don't recommend using it to bring up numbers -- it takes too long. And, it takes too long to get it out of a cat's system. HC wet food, the kind with gravy, is in and out of the system far more quickly. You can see the effects within 15 min. I'd really encourage you to get some canned food that is HC.

Moving shot time by 15 min. will have a negligible effect on numbers.

Re: 8/7 Savannah amps 252; 8/6 +5.5 57;question

Okay I will try the HC next time... what does that stand for? I'll look on Janet and Binky's list. Maybe I can find some this morning at the local pet shop.
BTW. Sienne, Savannah has been a diabetic for four years, so I'm not sure what you mean by newly diagnosed. Do you mean not to worry b/c since she is not newly diagnosed those numbers are fine? Sorry I'm not good with this stuff!!

Thx,
D

Re: 8/7 Savannah amps 252; 8/6 +5.5 57;question

Thx Ronnie and Luna...no wonder I couldn't find it on the lists....
By gravy, do ppl mean the yucky gel like stuff in the wet food can?
What kind do most ppl use?

Thanks!
dd

Re: 8/7 Savannah amps 252; 8/6 +5.5 57;question

the gel stuff, I call it broth - it's usually in the pate styles and not really gravy.
gravy foods is usually marinated, sliced, etc.. if you shake the can, it sounds like gravy

check Janet's food chart - anything over 12% is MC to HC..under 10% is considered LC.
fishy flavours tend to be LC.

Re: 8/7 Savannah amps 252; 8/6 +5.5 57;question

Thx..I went to KMart and hastily grabbed couple cans of FF "gravy lovers- chicken feast in grilled chicken flavor gravy" but now I can't figure out which one it is on Janet and Binky's list. I got excited when I saw gravy....oh well!

Re: 8/7 Savannah amps 252; 8/6 +5.5 57;question

The "gravy lovers" is new which is why you can't find it. I've been using it with Gabby as has Devon (Mocha's bean). It works just fine to bump up numbers.

Sorry about not realizing Savannah was not newly diagnosed. I had company and was writing on the fly since it looked like you needed your question answered. For a longer term diabetic (i.e., a kitty who has FD for longer than a year), numbers need to drop under 40 to earn a decrease or they need to have 3 instances on different days of numbers under 50 to earn a decrease.

Thx for the advice Sienne, I'll keep that in mind next time. I'm such a scaredy cat when she starts to get lower than even 70. Next time I'll just try to watch her and see where it goes.
