Syringe info; hiding making testing/shots very difficult

(Note: I started this post earlier today with some comments about syringes, but now have a serious problem to discuss. So I am changing the original subject line, and putting my new question up here ahead of the syringe discussion.)

Ragnar's behavior has changed drastically during his second bout with diabetes, and his habit of hiding (where I can't find him - NOHOW!) is making his shots irregular and testing almost impossible. I started out with a reasonable 9 AM, 9 PM shot time, but he has thrown it off by hours several times because I couldn't find him - then I would work back 1/2 hour per shot, aiming for 9 AM, 9 PM again. I've only gotten as close as noon and midnight, and after he hid yesterday until his noon shot was at 3:30 PM, we are now at 3:30 AM and PM. I set my clock last night for 3; went to sleep at midnight and woke at 2; gave the shot at 3:30 and didn't get back to sleep. This is our usual routine (tests? forget it!) and I am becoming a wreck.

Ragnar has always been a lap cat - he's wanted to be in direct physical contact with me 24 hours a day if possible! Now he does sleep on my feet or even leaning against my side at night, but hides all day unless he is hungry. Normally, when I was home he would always be on my lap.

This is perfectly reasonable from his point of view: his loving Mommy has transformed into a meanie who sticks him with needles and pokes his ears until they bleed - if he gives her a chance. His response is to NOT give me a chance, and he's winning. Of course I've tried to include as much positive reinforcement as possible, but he's always gotten that - what is new is the poking, and he is having none of it.

I got his 3:30 PM shot in today because he was hungry. Shot; ate; disappeared; haven't seen him since. I would like to do a +6 test to try to find his nadir on 1.5 units, but that's only an hour from now, and I don't expect to see him by then.

Dr. Jen privided a dog-sized carrier to use as a "cage" but I don't have room for it. No matter - if I could get him I could lock him in my bedroom for at least as long as I could keep him in the carrier (and he'd like it much better), but he sneaks off when I'm busy or not looking. So the "cage" was a bust, and I have yet to get him locked in the bedroom. (I am sure he'd learn to anticipate and avoid that, too.)

Can anyone help us? BTW, I live in a house that has a lot of hiding places; eliminating one might be possible with a Herculean effort, but eliminating them all would be impossible.

Blessings!

(Original Message)

My syringes with the 1/2u markings haven't arrived yet from Hocks - I expected them at least by yesterday, so we ran out of syringes and I had to drive to town (15 miles RT) today for more. They couldn't find BD Ultrafine; had another brand that was supposed to be the same, and I only wish I could remember the name of the brand because those syringes were no good! For one thing, the plunger didn't go down to the zero mark - the first unit contained about 1/4 unit of air. Second, they were incredibly dull. I could hardly get the needle into the Lantus, and it was like punching Ragnar's poor little skin with an awl.

I took them back and showed Dr. Jen what was wrong with them so she won't use them again either. (She probably just had a mfgrs. sample.) I can't remember the brand, but they have an orange cap at both ends, and the caps are greatly flared out at both ends. If you see something like this, don't buy it! It's always safe to stay with BD Ultrafine - they are reasonably sharp, and you can always push the plunger down to zero.

Now I hope my Hocks syringes with the 1/2u markings aren't like this. If they are, back to BD and eyeballing the 1/2u.

By the way, Walmart's website did not show Relion insulin syringes as available either online or in stores. Might be discontinued - if you like them and your store still has some, maybe you should stock up.

Blessings!

shirley, i don't think they've ever shown syringes on the walmart web site...

Re: Bad syringe brand; Relion may be becoming unavailable

I just bought Walmarts Relion brand syringes the other day. My Walmart is close though so I don't have to buy online. I don't mind buying a brand from Hocks, just decided to get these this time. Figured I was more experienced now and could deal with them. As I don't think they are very user friendly compared to others that I have used.
Thanks for the info anyway Shirley.

I thought everything they carried was listed on the website!

We don't have a local Walmart anyway, but I checked it in case a friend was going to Fargo or Jamestown, or in case I could get them sent from a nearby Walmart more quickly than from Hocks. (The ones from Hocks are certainly taking their time!)

Blessings!

Gee, you live nearby - maybe I should have asked if you would pick them up and mail them, and I'd pay you for the syringes (or buy them over the phone with my card) and postage.

But maybe not if they are less user friendly...

In any case, the ones from Hocks are on the way. Dr. Jen is keeping some BD Ultrafine in case I run out before the next box gets here.

BTW, I read in a sticky that BD syringes with 1/2 unit markings are available. Does anyone know where? I trust the brand, and trust my "eyeballing" less (though I've practiced a lot with empty syringes).

Blessings!

Re: Bad syringe brand; Relion may be becoming unavailable

I'm not sure about the BD Shirley, but I bought Monoject with 1/2 unit markings from Hocks and I liked them. The plunger is flat so it lines up easier. I found the ones from Walmart the plunger was very stiff. But I decided to give them another try. The only problem with me getting them for you is that I live in ct and you need a perscription.

I'm sure you'll get the ones that you ordered soon.

Yes the 1/2 unit markings make all the difference.

Re: Bad syringe brand; Relion may be becoming unavailable

It probably doesn't show on the website because in some states a script is required and therefore, needs to go through a pharmacist.

If you could get a script called into my local walmart, I can pick up the syringes for you and ship them. My state requires a script.

The local walmart pharmacy is:

Walmart Store #5281
306 Us Highway 9 North
Woodbridge, NJ 07095
(732) 826-4652

Remember to state, 1/2 unit markings.....

Oops again - I was thinking that you were the member who lives in Fargo. The name, I am sure, is similar, and our PMs are all on the *old* board...

Blessings!

PS: I have another concern - quite a serious one - but don't want to start another line for the same cat on the same day. Still, there is useful info about syringes in this one, which might help someone else, so I don't want to change the original subject line. What to do...(I wish we had a smiley scratching one's head!)

Shirley....you may want to cut and paste your new problem on your first post to a new post in this thread. I think most people will not go back and read your original post. It is a tough one and you want to get a lot of feedback.

I wish I had something to say that would help you. Are you sure Raglan is feeling ok? If hiding is unusual for him then maybe something is bothering him.

You may have to just close off room doors so he cannot hide in as many places.

Hi Shirley, I know what you mean by hide and seek. I had to start closing some rooms off. Do you give treats when you test? Freeze dried chicken or even better salmon, has Tess purring during testing. Set meal times help too. Tess comes to find me at shot time, because that is when she gets her main meals. Snacks follow tests!

So the routine is:
For shots
  • hungry kitty waiting for breffis (or dins),
    test,
    treat,
    prepare food,
    draw shot,
sit on chaise (always the same testing and shooting location),
    put down food,
Tess homes on on the dish,
shoot while she is occupied with the food,
    another treat
For tests:
  • bring Tess to chaise
get her settled between my legs (a position where she can't back away), maybe w/ a treat
pet and rub ears until warm, purring starts
lancet cap between teeth, I use BD microfine 30 gauge, they are sharper and don't hurt as much
strip in meter and place right next to Tess
    prick ear,
    stroke ear for good drop
    test
compress w/ pad for 15 seconds
    TREAT!!!
    check reading
I think the key is getting a set routine.

Also I know some people like coarser lancets, saying they get a bigger drop. For me a warm ear and a little milking work just fine and Tess doesn't wince w/ the finer lancet. I also freehand, it's easier for me to aim, hold the lancet at 45 degrees and aim between the vein and edge of ear. I hope this helps.

As for the Hocks delivery, If I order on Sat or Sun, it is processed on Mon., shipped on Wed. and I have it on Fri. or Sat. I have them use the Post Office, not UPS or FedEx.

Trouble is, the worst hiding places are in rooms that can't be closed off. The best I can do it close him off from them by putting him in my bedroom with the door shut. Did that for the last 1/2 hour before his 1:30 PM today, and he just lay down and went to sleep.

The shot-with-food worked wonderfully pre-honeymoon, when he was on Vetsulin and had two discrete meals a day. Now he's free-feeding and food won't distract him - he'd rather avoid the shot than get a little more food. I found something last night that will distract him - two large, juicy catnip plants! After a catnip leaf last night, he even gobbled up his Pill Pockets as he used to do. (Recently he'd refused and I've had to force them - more "mean mommy" trauma.)

Plan to try for a +6 reading tonight and try to find his nadir. His numbers on 1.5u have been irrational, probably because the early tests were taken so shortly after raising it to 1.5, he hadn't responded to it yet. Most recent: 193 PMPS; 228 +2 (new shot hadn't taken effect yet at +2). Good numbers, getting close!

Blessings!

simple solution.
no more free feeding!
Set meals and snacks at certain times and set amounts, and that's that.

Just wondering, do you have a spreadsheet you can attach to your signature?

We don't have a spreadsheet yet - not enough info to put in it, and not enough time to work on it!!

Keeping him hungry - at least for the few hours pre-shot - may help. We want him to EAT, but I will definitely run this past Dr. Jen.

Blessings!

BTW, I see this has reappeared near the beginning - thanks to new postings. Good!
