Whew. Looks like we're clearing that bounce finally.

I think I'm going to try to start moving her onto the raw this weekend. I really want to get her off this HC stuff and so far she's tolerating the little bit of raw I've given her. Before starting the switch, do I need to let her shed empty out a bit? She's going from 34% carb to 10-15% carb and while I'm planning on cutting her insulin back, I don't want to have an accident because her shed is full at the 1.75 dose. Does it make a difference?

Hope everyone has a happy green/blue and healthy day!

Re: 6/13 Nikki AMPS 207 & Food Switch ?

It's also one of those days when I have a bad feeling about leaving Nikki home all day. :? Besides the fact that I'd rather spend the rainy day curled up with my cats, she was super hungry this morning and it makes me nervous to leave her with no food all day, even though she was just fine all the days I've done the same. I think tomorrow I'll mix up and leave some frozen raw in her feeder...

Re: 6/13 Nikki AMPS 207 & Food Switch ?

When switching to a lower carb food you have a couple of choices.

Depends on if you are doing the switch cold turkey or a gradual switch. Sounds like you are planning a gradual changeover.

You may want to cut the dose in half. Instead of 1.75, start giving her less, like 1U or 0.75U. Monitor closely, because the shed will need to drain a bit, and as the lower carb food kicks in, the need for insulin drops dramatically. In days sometimes. Do not bother to skinny the dose down, as that will not be fast enough with the reduction of the carb content in the food.

With Wink, I was not dropping the insulin dose fast enough. Made a switch from Hill's W/d dry (37% carb) to Fancy Feast (3-7% carb). When he was still on 1/3 dry, 2/3 wet he had his first hypo. When the food was at 1/4 dry and 3/4 wet, hypo, hypo, hypo, .........

I got to the point where I actually stopped giving the insulin to let things settle down. That is another option. Stop giving insulin for a day or two while you finish the transition to the wet food, raw food.

Re: 6/13 Nikki AMPS 207 & Food Switch ?

Thanks. Was thinking of dropping her down to 1u tomorrow morning and starting 1/4 new food and 3/4 old on Friday night. That will give shed a chance to drain a bit on Friday and I'll be home all weekend to monitor dose. Then I'll reassess and continue laddering dose, then food, etc.

Much better day in the yellows. Now to spend some time making myself insane counting calories and tablespoons to figure out her new food config. @-) Final daily serving of the raw is 1/2 cup so I think I'm going to switch 1/4 at a time to make my life easier.

Yucko. Wonder if she went low today and is bouncing again? Think I'll reduce just to 1.5u tomorrow for start of food switch and then go from there. All 5 P's are good today at least!
