My sugar kitty, Wendell, has been waking up in the middle of the night howling. This has been going on for a few months, since around the time he was diagnosed with diabetes.

Many people had speculated that his bg might be going too low. Last night, I finally got a test of his blood when he was wailing. At +6 since his shot, he was at 270.

Anyone have any other ideas as to what is causing these nighttime howling sessions?

It could be Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome.

You might try 15-20 minutes of active play before dinner to tire him out and to initiate the hunt, catch, kill, eat, eliminate, groom, sleep behavior cycle.

Ooh, you're right. I had forgotten about that.
Probably because I'm not getting any sleep.

BUT. . .he's not showing any other symptoms. He wanders and cries, but he knows who I am, he knows where his food is, and he still pees and poops in his box. Could that still be it?

When Wendell was tested for diabetes, did they also check for Hyper-T?

I give him food. That usually shuts him up . . . for about a minute.
He knows where I am. When I go to sleep he's almost always next to me.

I thought it might be an "I need to poop" thing, because he's been really constipated lately, and usually goes in the wee hours of the morning, but the last few days he's left me perfectly soft little stogies of poop, which would indicate to me that he's no longer having that problem.

Do you have night lights? As cats get older their eye vision may change and total darkness can be confusing. One of mine woke me up one night crying.....tested.....fine.....turned out light and crying started again. Discovered bathroom night light burned out so I replaced it and my cat was just fine. Thanks Mom.......I can see again

Also would check thyroid if that hasn't been done.

Maybe he's trying to say "Hey, I can't sleep with the lights on!"

How old is he, and any chance on the thyroid issue?

Thanks Carl and Bob for the article about howling. Now I see another "sign" that I missed! I thought that the howling was just something that cats do. After reading the article I now see that it was just another way my cat was trying to tell me something was wrong with him!!!

Should you have need of it Feline Constipation will tell you more than you ever thought you'd need to know!
